James of Bishopa ofrnncr 'Ripjise man and form TAUV ? er member of the general assembly, The call follows: i"I hereby call for a convention oi the reform faction of the democratic party, to be held on Tuesday, October 18th, in Colombia." During the campaign Just passed, appeals were made to save civilira, tion, as was done in 1876, when negro domination was the issue. Men have been heard to justify questionable methods at the ballot box upon the same grounds as when dealing ? * with negroes in 1876 and now it is up to us, and is our duty, to hold a great convention and demonstrate that we are as good white men as are those who contemptuously stigmatize the bone and sinew of this state as "Bleaaites" and for the further purpose of increasing our faith in and consecrating our efforts to the continuance of the struggle for the prin> ciples upon which we stand. "I suggest that each democratic club send one true and tried reformer as delegate to this convention. "All newspapers who have any of the kind of people as subscribers, please publish one time." Tinney, the mafl carrier with John Robinson's Ten Big Shows, which will give afternoon and evening performances in Greenwood; on Saturday, October the 7th, is-a very important personage?at least, in the eyes of the army of show folk whose mail goes through his hands. Also, excepting the managers and ticket sellers and takers, he is perhaps thfe busiest man with the show, for he ,looks after practically all of the posita! wants (receiving and sending letters, parcels, registered mail, post ; cilice money orders, etc.) for no fewer than five hundred men and women. Quite a family, isn't it? You probably would not care for such a position. But it doesn't bother the circus mail carrier. He .attends to this work, in conjunction with his other duuties, (he is also musical director and has charge of the several bands of the show,) with as much ease as any healthy, able bodied person would experience in walking .along a highway. He carries a spajcious leather bag just like that of any regular U. S. mail carrier, but hie wears no uniform. He has his ce.de^itials, and the uniform is not ne*ce??ary. i In every town and city in which the circus exhibits, he visits the post- ', office thrice daily?in the morning, at midday, and late in the afternoon. He calls for all maid in care of the circus arid subsequently gives the postmoster a list of the executives, agents, performers, musicians, etc., of the show and asks for their mail. Then he sends letters, parcels, papers, gets money orders cashed, sends money orders, etc., etc. Moreover he oftentimes has to send and receive telegrams and express packages for members of his big family. And he does sit all very efficiently?if he doosn'jt, he'd have to step down and make room for someone else; for in al| branches of the circus business,' lefficiency is the first requisite. The circus mail carrier is, of course, a thoroughly reliable individ-. ual and hie has to be, for he trans-1 acts , hundreds of dollars' worth of business in the course of a week. The circus mail carrier's compensation is liberal, but he earns every penny of it. However,' he is not paid until' thfe end of the season. The day on which the show closes, every per-| son. with the aggregation gives him a 'piece of money,' as the circus ifolk say. From each employe of the show he receives a sum which may range anywhere between seventyfive cents and five dollars, the exe- ' cutives, of course, being more liberal " ithan the working men. Where there J are five hundred attaches with a ciricus, the mail carrier can figure that be will receive at least five hundred dollars; never less; sometimes more. So, you see, besides the regular salary which is paid him fob1 his services or musical director, he receives, for his side work, enough money to perceptibly swell his bank account.
