Julv 19, 1916. i Dear Club Members:? 1 You will be surprised to know what a fine time we prize winners had at our Short Course given by Dr. D. B. Johnson at Winthrop college. There were 76 girls, 65 being tomato club girls, and 11 being poultry club girls. On Monday, June 19th most of us left Columbia at 4#0 in a special car for Rock Hill and arrived there a little after 7 \ o'clock. We were met there by our state agents and demonstrators, we then went on a car down to the college. We were met there by representatives of the Y. W. C. A., and carried to Winthrop's beautifpl dining room. / ' After V supper we registered. Eunice and I were late so we had the luck of being assigned to a room on third floor, . but we did not /mind it so much after all. Miss Simpson, our state secretary,1 came around to our rooms that night and put our money in. our club bank down in the office. We could draw out any when we wanted it. Tuesday morning after breakfast, we were ushered into the Winthrop society hall, where we were all given valuable books containing lessons oh cooking, sewing, manuel training, agriculture and poultry, and it was I in this pretty hall that we met every mnminai oftor K*o?1rfflcf onH ennV 1 oar club songs. Miss Lois Erwin, a ' 1 pretty demonstrator from Spartan- t( burg county, was our jolly chorus c teacher. One of these songs she t wrote while we were there, it is beau- t tifully dedicated to Dr Johnson. t After this pleasant exercise each c morning we were instructed by i |i v Profs. Clark and Whitfield in agri- < culture and by by Prof. Cleveland 1 in poultry. He told us many things ? about the poultry market that I \ would never haVe believed. One j night he showed us some interesting picture slides concerning the poultry market, the picture that impressed me most was fourteen cars full of chickens being shipped to market at New York City by one man. The chickens were on shelves one above the other. . After our poultry lesson we went to chapel exercises each morning. Dr. Johnson gave us a hearty welcome the first morning. After chapel exercises we went out In. front of the main building, where we were all seated until Miss Jo Ydrborouo'h. a kind demonstrator from Chester county, delivered our mail to us. We also sung our club songs and listened to an interesting lecture given by some Professor or demonstrator. After our out door course we were engaged in cooking until dinner, these helpful lessons were taught by I Miss Baustic. She taught us how to make soups, rolls and cook eggs abput a dozen ways. We were also taught valuable lessons | in canning by Mrt. Dora Dee Walker, our beloved assistant state agent. \These lessons consisted in canning peaches, bepns, making jellies, pickles, preserves, and marmalades. ' The fancy . packs were beautiful, and I think the club girls will really taxe a delight in canning now, since we were taught to do better work with less labor. After dinner we were taught in the sewing class by Miss Minne Lee Garrison, a very sweet lady, who is a demonstrator from York county. She certainly did teach me how to make a button hole too before I left. Be lieve me she was somewhat surprised that I did not already know. After sewing we were instructed in the manuel training class by Miss Erwin, our chorus teacher, until 5.15. We were given time to prepare for supper then, which was at 6 o'clock. After supper we could either go to our rooms, to the lecture and educational moving pictures, or remain on the campus, where we were taught interesting games by one of the lecturers at the college. I took what I called the "campus course," and uiau 10 YTIlOt/ UlUOb vx K11V 511M uwvtvtvu upon, because a crowd of Rock Hill boys and girls would come up to see the club girls every night. We had a regular party. One night we were given a 50c firlrof thp rnnrert hv Dr. Johnson. this we all enjoyed and appreciated very much. The pictures and lectures were also free. We were carried into the new gym. hall one morning where we went in the swimming pool. The hall will be beautiful when completed. We were anxious eo know-what ^ would do on Saturday, since that not a day for lessons.
