Concrete Fence Posts. The United States Department of Agriculture has issued an elaborate bulletin on the subject of "Concrete Fence Posts." This bulletin goes into details, gives full and minute instructions, enabling the farmers to build their own fences with the farm labor. By applying to the Office of labile Roads. Good hatches cannot result if the Bltter9 are bothered by the other hens, as they are sure to be when set where outsiders can get to them. Neither do they hatch quite so well where they must be fastened up tight, then given liberty at certain times. Many hens of many minds, and sitters are not inclined to get off their eggs at the same time, incubating time is best to impress such .truths, so remember before another hatching season.?E. C., in the Indiana Farmer. Alfalfa. Really the whole subject of .alfalfa j might well be treated under the two heads, "Seeding" and "Harvesting," so^ery inclusive are these two phases of tae subject. Without careful seeding one cannot have a crop to harvest, and without careful harvesting he might almost as well not have a crop. Both call for intelligence and painstaking farming, and much patience and hard work. But the rewards of these virtues and labors are heavy ; yields from the most valuable forage plant. If it is worth nine times as much as timothy, it can well demand a little more time and labor than the average crop.?From Coburn's "The Book of Alfalfa." Dairy Cows and the Silo. A Wisconsin dairyman says that the silo and good feed at reasonable cost is making this method of handling dairy herds feasible and popular. With excellent succulent feed on hand about all the year, .the I dairyman plans to have his calves come at whatever time he considers will best serve his own interests. The majorityi of the dairymen in the southern part of my county are now equipped with silos, and they would now consider it a hardship to have to do without them. In the northern section the use of silos is less general, though they are now fast coming into use. The desire of the dairymen to build np their dairy herds in both quality and quantity is the reason why the percentage of heifer calves coming into market is so small. With the ensilage feed dairymen can mature their good heifer calves without great expense, and they are holding them back for that purpose, in the meanwhile gradually selling off the old and less profitable cows and building up herds of great milk producing capabilities. Directions For Modeling a HoineMade Brooder. With a little mechanical ability and a few ordinary tools a good brooder may be made in spare moments out of an ordinary large dry goods box. Obtain a substantial box made of three-quarters to seven-eighth-inch stuff and about two and a half by two and a half by four feet. By glancing at the illustration of the box you can readily see the kind of box that is desirable and how the box is sawed into two parts. You will notice that one nart is lareer than the other. The larger part is used for the bover and, on account of the lamp being underneath the floor, necessarily must be deeper than the scratching apartments. The large part should measure two and a half to three feet- in height on the higher side after the box is sawed; the smaller part will measure two feet in height on the higher side. If the box you obtain does not conform to these dimensions saw the box in two proportionately. After having sawed the box in two, notice the illustration of the brooder, showing the way the two parts arc then put together. The floor in the larger or hover part is raised from ten to twelve inches from the bottom ol the .box so the lamp may be placed undexfthe floor. The size of your lamp !Rould govern the height of the I floor from the bottom of the box. Two or three inches, of course, may be counted off from the height of the lamp, as the flue will go up under the tin heater that far and still burn well. An incline is made the whole width of the scratching apartment from the floor of the hover floor to the scratching floor. The floor in this part also should be several inches from the ground, to be high and dry and to I minimize tue incline between the two floors. There will be a six-inch incline from the ground to the brooder door, and a six-inch incline from the scratching floor to the hover floor. Little chicks will easily learn to ascend these snort inclines, but when made any longer much difficulty will be experienced with the chicks the first weeks and probably several will die from exposure on account of not being able to find their way back to the warm hover. These inclines, it is to be remembered, are made the whole width of the brooder, so the little chicks cannot back under it. A window is placed on each side of Ihc scratching room. One is placed ! in the hover room, but it cannot bo i seen in the illustration, as it is on the opposite side from where the lamp j fume is placed. These windows are j made long and narrow to avoid cut- j ting more boards in the box than may j be absolutely necessary. Then long, narrow strips of glass do not cost as much as the larger pieces. The panes of glass are held in place by strips of wood .from the inside and plenty of putty on the outside. The roof on both compartments is made, of good lumber and made very j substantia] and covered with a good ; roofing paper or tin and painted. The j roof hinges at the top. as shown in : the illustration, so access to any part i of the brooder will be easy and also for convenience in cleaning. V away from the walls of the brooder, . and helps very materially in the appearance. See that the lid-roofs fit down snugly against the walls of the brooder by placing a buffer of a couple of thicknesses of cloth all around the edge of the box on the inside in such manner that the lid will press down firmly against it. In making the heater measure the inside dimensions of the larger apartments. Obtain a piece of tin that will fit into this space, possibly just a little smaller than the floor. Then a section of ordinary stove pipe, seven j inches long and seven Inches in di- ! ameter. Do not think that a gallon tin wiLl do. There must not be any solder about the tin part of it. Get your tinner to put a tight cap or lid , on one end of this stove pipe. Then j make a hole in the large tin sheet , seven inches in diameter and fasten the stove pipe to it. It takes a tinner ( and a tinner's tools to do this. The small pipe leading off from this is two ( inches in diameter and has a tin protector to keep the wind from blowing directly in it. Do not fasten the small . pipe directly to the stove pipe, but , have it detached to fit on the collar of the stove pipe so you can get tne stove pipe up througb the floor from , the lower side so the large tin sheet , will cover the whole of the ceiling of , the lamp chamber and make the lamp . I1 HI; ;:=f. ; : i room fireproof. With this large sheet of tin lining the entire ceiling i of the lamp room,.one could build a i pretty h.ot fire before anything would catch fire. A tin shield is easily made to fit within a half-inch or so of the stove pipe to keep the chicks from close proximity to the hot pipe by i cutting holes in a piece of tin four inches wide and about twenty-six inches long. The making of the hover is the next thing in order. If your box is two nvwl " fenlf Vim on/1 i liqlf foAf | duu a aoii uj vwu cuiu a iiaiL make the hover about two by two, leaving a six-inch space about the sides of the hover. The hover is made of light pine or poplar boards threefourths of an inch thick, and the legs are made long enough so the top of the hover will easily clear the top of the tin dome of the stove pipe. Underneath the hover tack a piece of tin about twelve inches by twelve inches to reflect the heat and avoid any possibility of the hover getting too hot. Take an old piece of woolen cloth and tack it in rows, starting at the outside edge of the hover and making three or four rows. The woolen curtains should very nearly touch the floor so drafts cannot strike the chicks' feet. We have seen several brooders fail because the curtains were too short. Be sure to use wool for the curtain if you can possibly get it. as it holds the heat much better than ootton. Don't be afraid to use plenty of it so it will be cozy and as near like the down breast of the mother hen as nos siblo. Chicks like to have something pressing against their backs. A ventilator is made by the tinner out of scrap tin to open any distance. One ventilator is placed at the top ol the brooder on one side and one at the bottom on the opposite. A piece of tin bent in a half circle shape is made to fit over the ventilator opening on the inside and in the one casd conveys the air down to within an inch of the floor and in the other allows the surplus heat to pass down and out. This system of ventilation avoids any possibility of drafts and yet admits plenty of fresh air and lets the carbon dioxide pass off from neat the floor where it is more in abundance. A door is made for the lamp at the back side of the brooder. Also at the back of the brooder make two oblong hand holes just beneath the ceiling of the lamp chamber. These holes will give plenty of ventilation to the lamp and are used as hand holes by which to move the brooder about. Be sure these holes are at least one inch bj three inches, as the lamp confined in .so small a room makes a great amount nf boat and fhpsp will tn off the surplus and keep the floor ol tho chick chamber cool. A warm . brooder floor causes leg weakness. Purchase a good galvanized tin ' brooder lamp and a sun hinge burn- , er. A glass lamp will crack too easily when it g2ts warm and should never be used. The flue of the lamp should also be made of tin.?UidlRnwpolia , News. I AEROPLANE ENGINES. 1 Lightness and Economy in Fuel Less Important Than Trustworthiness. The result of the application of an engine and proleller to the glider was ' as curious as it was unexpected. The memorable experiments of Professor Langley on the Potomac River with ; gliders of his invention and a small steam engine whose weight was something like twelve pounds a horse pow- ^ er gave rise to the idea that only a ^ motor of much lighter weight a horse power was required to transform the glider into a successful power driven I machine, hut. now that such a motor is available through the perfecting of j i the .internal combustion engine it is j ! found that extreme lightness though < desirable is not altogether essential, J and in fact an engineof twelve pounds ? a horse power, if fitted to one of the oest types of aeroplane to-day, would j larry it with a pilot into the air. It has lately been seen that a bi- . plane can lift three passengers be- \ sides the pilot over short distances, ( while two may be carried with ease. y Assuming the combined weight of the f three passengers to.be 420 pounds, ihis is equivalent to an allowance of j nore than eight pounds a horso power , for a fifty horse power engine, in ad- l Jition to the actual weight of the en- ^ gine, which would be three to four -j pounds a'horse power. While there- T fore the ultimate achievement of dynamic flight was due to the lightness of the internal combustion engine in ^ relation to the power developed, sub- ^ sequent experiment has demonstrated ^ how to improve the efficiency of the sustaining surfaces and to diminish head resistance to such an ettent as to make extreme lightness in the motor desirable only on the score of freight carrying capacity. The competing claims o-f freight capacity and of motor trustworthiness, as insured by duplication of parts with consequent increase in weight, will be determined by the objects j sought in the design of the aeroplane. Saving of weight in the motor, however, permits the construction of a more compact and controllable machine than would be possible if the sustaining surfaces were designed to carry considerable dead weight, and it is toward a compromise in these respects that the design of the motors Is tending. The original motor used by the Wright brothers wais comparatively heavy and crude for the power devel-. oped, but with the large sustaining surfaces with which the early machines were fitted this extra weight wis by no means a disadvantage, since with a motor constructed on the lines of an automobile engine it en abled them without undue risk to carry on experiments which resulted in all round improvement in the machine. The result of experience now i shows that the aeroplane proper, 1 methods of stabilizing and control. < and construction generally, are more i highly developed than the motor, j which suffers from some palpable de- s fects that must circumscribe the use- < fulness of the machine until the in- < creasing attention directed to the sub- i ject has wrought the improvements t which are desired. 1 To gain freight carrying capacity 1 the weight of the motor a horse pow- ? er must be kept low, but without any t sacrifice in the certainty of its work- ? ing, and the ideal motor, like the ( "one hoss shay" of Oliver Wendell < Holmes, should be constructed < throughout with such a regard to the 5 saving of weight that all parts should i have the same factor of safety for the stresses that come upon them. Considerable doubt still exists as to the I best size and type of propeller, and < therefore the efficiency of the propel- 1 line- mpfhnnism as a whnlp rrmst rp- 1 main indeterminate; but the lack of definite rules upon which to design propellers need not interfere with the problem of the motor engineer, who has to provide a constant power at the propeller shaft with small weight of motor and adequate strength. At present the airman is more concerned with trustworthiness of running than with economy in fuel, but he is content to expend a gallon of petrol in traversing only twelve miles if by so doing he can secure' infallibility in the motor upon which his safety depends. Jn this respect the design of aerial motors is unlike that of the motor car engine, where economy forms one of the competing claims of the manufacturers. Leading airmen have expressed the belief that flight will be impossible with motors of less horse power' i\i the future than are fitted to aeroplanes to-day, and when the experi ments at the National Physical Lab- , oratory on propellers have been coneluded the reasons for this prophetic utterance may become apparent. The ( low thrust a horse power is due to the ignorance at present existing as to propeller design. Like the marine , turbine, the aerial engine runs too * fast for the best propeller speeds. The ' Wright brothers overcame this difficulty by the somewhat unmechanical . expedient of chain gearing, one chain being crossed. A French firm has ( utilized the half time cam shaft of the , engine, suitably enlarged, to drive \ the propeller, thus getting a speed re- ^ duction of two to one, but the Antoinette, Farman and Voisin types continue to drive the propeller direct without reduction. It is probable that the direct drive will prevail, for any form of gearing, however simple, , introduces an element of risk with doubtful benefits. The elimination of the dead weight of a flywheel by the rotating cylinder i motor is some advantage in l'avor of : the principle, in addition to the efficient coaling. It is perhaps to be regretted that British manufacturers have not devoted more attention to this type of motor, which has a claim to the earnest attention and study of engineers. The heavy rotating mass provided by the cylinders has a stea- 1 dying effect on the machine, and the 1 fact that the cylinders and connecting rods revolve, each in its own circular orbit, eliminates the results ol' reciprocating parts, while the perfect bal- < ??>nce of the motor can be easily at- i Lained, any departure therefrom be- ' jos counteracted by screwing the 1 spatting plugs in or out for the nee- ' essary adjustment. One difficulty of the rotating enSine is the lubrication, and until some means of reducing the consumption or lubricating oil is devised the rotating cylinder motor must have at least one compensating defect. On occasions like the London to Manchester flight the use of large quantities of lubricating oil may not matter, but in an everyday motor for the aeroplane in the hands of the "chauffeur," r)r whatever his aerial equivalent may be called, the lubrication must he relifed upon more than in the motor car, for while failure intheone case moans anly inconvenience, in the other it nay entail disaster.?London Times. ?tnMMco?0?iia?ss*?oae>9i* A Pig Squealed " i and?War! : ? e Champ Clark, the minority leader n the House of Representatives, says le hopes, to write some day a book lbout what a margin of one vote has caused to happen in the history of his country. The next few weeks are those in ivhich the miserable car.didates who iave been crammed to the eyelids for ,'ompetitive examinations are plucked ind drawn, and their intellectual casaclty gauged by their abilty to answer a number of perverted questions >n the knotty points of a round doz;n of subjects of very varying utilty. It has been our fortune to look hrough a series of recent examina-v :ion papers set by one governing )ody, and we can only confess our surprise at the extraordinary mental jlindness of the pedagogues who have ;et them. They are in nc sense a test ;f real knowledge; they are rather a collection of traps for the unwary stulent, who is examined, not in his abil- j ty to spaak a foreign language, but n his familiarity with irregular verbs. The history papers specialize on 'dates" and such dry bones of the last; the mathematical papers are full )f problems which could never come jefore the boy who is to enter a comnercial life, and which would be ridicllous as a training for the higher nathematics. The schoolmaster may iram his charges to pass such a test, Jut let us not delude ourselves with :he idea that such a learning by rote >f text books is education. An old-fashioned country house- \ wife who owns some fine cherry trees j gives the following recipe for drying ! cherries to use in winter pies. They j taste more like the fresh fruit tiian the cooked preserve, she says. Choose the finest and largest of red cherries, 3tonfe them and spread them on large platters in the sunshine. Let them stand until they become dry, taking them in only when the sun is down or the day is damp or cloudy. . When nicely dried pack them into stone jars after strewing them with the best brown sugar.?New York Tribune. i Ragout of Veal. Veal from shank or breast may be j used for this dish quite as well as i higher priced cuts. Stew the meat until very tender with onion, parsley, one-fourth cup of vinegar and a bay leaf, and remove from the bone while | warm. When cool cut into pieces j suitable for serving, roll each in sea- j soned flour, brown lightly in the fat i fried out slowly from several slices of j salt pork. Make the sauce with one- | fourth cup each of butter and flour ! and one-third cup of veal stock, one- j half teaspoon of kitchen bouquet, one j tablespoon of lemon juice and three j of prepared horseradish. Take hard boiled eggs,' cut in 1 halves, remove the half yolks and cut j them into rings. Place all these rings round edge of dish and pile the white rings up to make a sort of bor-1 der, pour some thick curry sauce in ' the middle, place the half yolks at equal distances apart on the white round the edge, sprinkle a few specks of green parsley round the edge of j whites; this gives the dish a pretty , appearance. Curry Sauce?One ta- j blespoon of butter, one of flour, one 1 teaspoon of curry powder, one large slice of onion, one large cup of stock, | salt and pepper to taste. Cut the j onion fine and fry brown in butter. Add the flour and curry powder. Stir for one minute, add the stock and . season with the salt and pepper. Sdm- ! mer five minutes, then strain and | serve.?Boston Post. j Afternoon Tea. One of the fads that has cropped ' out with the settled habit of afternoon tea drinking is the serving of colored bonbons with the tea in pla<-e of cube sugar. Some women make these bonbons, coloring them to suit the fittings of the table and flavoring them with lemon or orange. Rock candy is also used for this purpose. Lemon and tea are said to clear the complexion, but if one is very tired ' the tea should be drunk clear or with a little milk and very slowly. If one ever noticed the epicurean comfort of an old tea drinker with a cup of hoi tea one must have observed with whal deliberation the tea was taken. It i9 a fault with many housewives to let the tea stand too long after the water j goes on before serving.
