As Is usual at this time of the year, there Is * great cry about the short cotton crop. We believe It Is always short In the tall when tore accounts come due. In the spring time when ootton Is coming op lienor's cjops are nearly all flrst class. As well as we can learn the crop 1b really less than It was last year. At the oil ginnery, ooiiou wmK1Uuvm. In 1907 2,090 bales In 1908 2,158 bales Or 60 bales more ibis year tban was ginned last year np to tbls time. fiOO bales of last year's crop were ginned after Christmas. Mr. Harden, the manager, believes that no cotton of tbls year's crop will be ginned after Christmas. Mr. Longaaya that be has glnnetf 1,900 bales to date, which Is in exce?B of the amount which be ginned last year ap to this date. He thinksbe will gin 100 bales additional before closing down his ginnery. Old cotton brongbt forward In the warehouse: In 1907 105 bales V In 1908 1,323 bales In warehouse last year.4,700 hales In warehouse tblsyear.4,200 bales ^ Being 500 bales short ol the storage last year. Mr. Maglll estimates that of the cotton now In the Farmer's warebonse, 200 bales belong to merchants, leaving 4,000 bales In tbe hand* Of planters. Mr. 'Maglll estimates that the crop this year la about twenty-five per cent leaa than It waa last year. ' Cotton buyers on the street estimate the shortage this year at about :welve per cent. Mr. Harden, at the oil mill, thinks tbe shortage this year will prove to be from ten , . to fifteen per oent. ? - >nh <nnn bales in 1 Al H) WUBIUU laiuiviD ? >_ warehouse besides hundreds of balee stored under trees and sheds are In a bad fix we leave others to say. In our own opinion the lower prloe of cotton, which was raised at In. creased cost, hcrts worse than the shortage ' of orop. The oorn crop, too, la nearly a failure, which fact adds to the hardneea of the time. * 1 On the hand, the vaults of our banks never had half as much money on deposit at this time of the year as they have %t present. "The Dark Corner." "The Dark Corner" an attractive bound little book written by Mr. jZich McGee o! Greenwood has found its way Into onr bands. It was with the greatest of pleasare that we read his interesting sketch of the people who lived In the foot hills of our Peldmont section. The la book Is written In a most pleasing style and brings us In close touch and sympathy with this people. The book shows potrays in the most graphic way what environments play In our life. Mr MoOee's little book Is charming and when selecting Christmas books'do not forget the DarkOorner.' . At Home. * \ t tt r.vnn and hfi son Attorney General J. Regiment South Carolina Volunteers. Wben the scroll of fame of the companies that served In the Confederate army Is prepared Co. F of the 2nd Regiment South Carolina Volunteers will ocoupy a high place on It. v ORGANIZATION AND OFFICERS. This company was organized at Greenwood, then Abbeville county, bdci adopted the name Secession Guards. The first enrollment for one year was about one hundred men, Including officers. The following were elected to fill the places of commissioned of floors: Captain, Wm. W. Perryman ; 1st Lieutenant, James W. Foosbe; 2nd. John T. Parks; Wm. Appleton elected Lieutenant and transferred to oommlBsary department; 3rd, John J. Adams: Wm, A. LI m beck er was < elected Lieutenant some time during the year < In place ot J. T. Parks, resigned. I THE REORGANIZATION AND THE NEW j OFFICERS. I After the year's enlistment in the Confed- ' urate servloe bad expired the company was reorganised and a number of names added to , the roll and a number transferred to otber oommands, so there was never more than one "** 11 ? * ? ?? I ' hundred names on me ron m uue uuie. iuc offloers elected at reorganization were: Captain, Wm. W. Ferryman, 1st Lientennnt, John C. Maxwell; 2nd, George W. McDowell; ; 3rd, N. Calvin Vauce. In abort time after tbla : Capt. Perryman waa promoted to the rank of Major and transferred to the enrolling depart . meat. John C. Maxwell was promoted Cap? , tain, served a short time and was transferred to the medical department. Alexander McNeill and "Bamuel A. Coon were elected Lieutenants to All the vacancies. \ PROMOTIONS AND KILLED. Geo. W. McDowell waa promoted Captain. , He waa killed at Gettysburg. N. Calvin 1 Vance was promoted Captain and served In that place until the war ended. G. Whitfield i Connor was eleoted Lieutenant Samuel A. Coon was killed at tbe Wilderness. In every 1 engagement In which tbls company bore a 1 part they acted with conspicuous bravery. e In the battle of Cbiokamauga, Ga., I was a courier for General Kershaw and had a posl- c tlon near tbe Second S. C. Regiment, and I t can say wltbont tbe fear of contradiction t that no braver man ever faced an enemy. I saw them reeelve and drive back tbree dls- 8 tlnct charges of tbe enemy, standing in an I open roadway, without protection of any r kind, and not only tbls, but when tbe brigade h In front of tbem was driven back they stood c v to a man and when tbe troouB had passed t over they arose and received tbe enemy's r oharge and drove them back. To tbose who were never in a battle tbis mlgbt seem a small tbing, but in every previous lnstanoe In my experience tbe troops oocupylog the reserve position were swept back by the onrush of tbe men in front.
