It is quite a common thing to hear individuals who are not church members, laying at the door of members of the church, and especially cburcb officers, responsibility for much of the rotteness aud crookeduess that permeates society. The complaint comes up sometimes like this: "Look at so and so, he is a prominent church man, occupies a front seat at every service and haa the mouth in everything that the church does. Yet everybody knows that he is not to be trusted in au ordinary business transaction, his reputation for = common honesty is not good, and he does things that would be condemned in men who make no such profession. How do you expect the people to be any better than they are with such men as this for leaders." We would not be understood as trying to defend any kind of improper conduct in any church member or any church official, and we agree with the commonly accepted notion that church members and church officials should so conduct themselves as to be tit examples for other people in all matters relating to correct and righteous practices. This is too plain a pro position to admit of contravention; but we submit that it is the duty of everyone to put common sense behind the purpose for which people generally . point out the uuworthiDess of church members or church officers,viz: the justification of themselves, 1 There is no question of the fact that -/all church members and church officers should be honest and upright in all their dealings and clean and correct in all their conduct; but in cases where they do not measure up to these conditions we are unable to see where or how their failure should be any justification of their examples. While it is true that unworthy church members aud unworthy church officers are discreditable to the churches to which they belong, they are still more discreditable to themselves, and therfe is no good ground to charge responsibility against the 1 churches. As a matter of fact not cne of the different Christian denominations as such stands for a thing that is wrong or questionable. Asa * matter of fact, the tenets of all the Christian denominations are sound and wholesome and tbe failure of the individual to live up to those tenets must not be keldas a reflection upon the tenets, but upon the individual. And as for the man who complains against the church because individual members thereof are recreant in their duty, we think be, should quit complaints against the church, and apply them more directly against tbe moral turpitude of the individuals complained of. And it will be better even to leave off this until he becomes of the church himself, for if he is dissatisfied with the kind of people of ^ which the church is made up, he cer* tainly cannot hope to work much of a revolution from tbe outside. Instead of waiting for the church to become better, it would be a better move on his part to join and undertake from t the inside such reforms as he thinkB ore rippiipri But with it all do not let it be understood that the people who compose the church are all what they should be. There is plenty of meanness and hypocrisy in the church. There are church members and church officers who do not hesitate to serve the devil in the livery of heaven. This picture of American conditions has some truth in it, but is nothing like so true to existing conditions as 10 those of 20 years ago. The American business ideal is no longer the hurrying man, but the smooth man. He multiplies all over the States. He feeds, if not so slowly as theBritou, much more slowly than the vanishing American of the hurrying ideal did. He is temperate in drink wliilfl a pond dpftl of a cnur met. He is growing slowly stout. It is a mistake to believe that he breeds weakling sons. On the contrary, the physique of the American business class notably improves. The sons evolute in the direction of athleticism. They keep up all manner of clubs for wholesome outdoor and indoor exercise, and they are pretty diligent in sport as in business. It is true that they become absorbed in trade, but they do not go to business as young as they formerly, did Increasing nuvnberB of them pass hrough college first. t It is possible that the physique of young America might deteriorate in spite of all this, by intense application of successive generations of fathers,to business, if the women were doing nothing to help. But tbe change in physique of the American woman is one of the most notable and significant changes of the past 40 years. She is now commonly robsut and inclined to embonpoirt, decidedly a strong woman, the mother of vigorous children, though she doesnot bear enough of them. She takes in her girlhood, a great deal of open air exercise, and is, on the whole, a finer physical specimen than the * _ mi in j j.i! American inaiJ. me puiuu, uencate, lazy, American woman type of 40 years ago is little in evidence now. Her successor contributes greatly to the improving pbysipue of the business classes. In all this evolution Uncle Sam's children have learned much from John Bull,s whom they imitate extensively. In turn J . B .'s imitate them in some things, not always of the best. If they would carry the imitation to strenuosity in business, they would probably gain in trade, in health, and in happiness. For one of the paradoxes of life is that there is more pleasuree in occasional sport than in almost incessant sport, The average Ameincan plays that he may work better, the average Englishman is apt to work only that he may play. He often feels ill-need by having tc work at all. The Canadian and Americian more often like work, and like play all the better for working with zest. BELLEVUE.
