H p. ri"" f Kr', %%%%%% %%-%%% %%%%%%' Farmers' Educational and Co-operative Union. k, F. A. CHEATHAM, j > Editors. A. F. CALVERT. J %%%%%%%%% %%%%%%%% Gutting acreage and holding cotton reminds me of something else. Do yon know of any farmer in South Carolina that Is holding a fine beef Bteer, pig, or a floe pair of mules, or good pair of ooacb horses, a ton of bay or a bushel of grain, or a lot of good fat bens and frying chickens, a lot of iresb eggs and butter, that is now waiting on some live stock, or grain and ba> association, or dairymen's aBbOclatlon, or ben society to meet aud pass resolutions to hold these South Carolina farm products for profitable prices? No! None of these kind of farmers are walling for profitable prices for these products, but on the other hand buyers are going all over the country look ing for these farm pro J acts and are paying fine prices. Tbe producers or this kind ol fctouth Carolina larm products ate not holding and hunting for buyers bul the opposite condition Is here. The buyers are on hunt all the while for this stuff, and this is no neu condition of things in South Carolina. Is li not strange that all animals, even giuttontbeasts, learn to know when they get enough of a thing? But, somehow or other, some of our silly all-cotton farmers seem never to know when they have got enough cotton. The more home supplies oue h?R atynit him the easier It Is to hold cotton. Yon ranuui starve a cook any more than you can starve out a farmer that raises all these home sup piles. This kind of South Carallna farmer can bold on to his cotton until his cloihes are worn into hoies and the lax man comes. E-v * SOnlh Carolina state Farmers Union to Organize. *' ' At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the' South Carolina Farmers' Educational and Co-operative Union In counoli with Anderson County Union on the 13th, KWas agreed to organize a State Union ai Anderson, S. C.. beginning on May 31st, and continue the meetlhg nntll the work Is flnishGil* Messrs.B. F. Earie. State organizer, Anderson, Professor Mabatfey, of Wlillamston, and Hon. 0. P. Goodwin, of .Laurens, AsMstant State organisers, as well as several local organizers, are now In the field bringing tbe : farmers together in tbe Union preparing for oreanlzing tbe Stale Union. 11 you know of a good farmer In your county that Is as good an organizer or belter than tbe three named above, just trot him out, <r we have a good Job for him. Send bis name In to either of the organizers. The Farmers' t Union needs aboul 25 more good men to visit every county In tne State. ? Lebanon Farmers Union, Anderson County, saved to its members by loyal ct-operanon last year sixteen thousaud dollars. This agteeable and highly commendable report was brought out at the last Anderson Coun. ly Farmers' Union. Cedar Grove Union, of Anderson County, bad a fine oyster supper and good speakmg last Saturday night. That Is right; >ou see JB-" .It Is good to leed unionism to the Inner man now and then, and not try to crowd too much t- Unionism into the brain all the while. 6 , ' When yon first beard abont the Farmers' ; Union coming your way you could not help thlnklDg about all the bad things the Alllanoe tad done, conld you? But when you know more about the Farmers' Union, and get a peep on tbe Inside of some real good lively union, you will then Know that the up-to-date Farmers' Union has learned a great big thing oat of the mistakes iheAlllan oe made. ? ? Well, dow, If you think we are not saying enough of tbe right thlDgs in these column*, and are saving too much on tbe wrong side ofourferming Interest, do drop us a little confidential note abont It, so tbat we will know better nekt time. Don't forget tbat tbe Farmers' Union Is an edQcatlonal affialr, and tbat we all should take learning from each other. Some men can tell yon abont many bad tblngt tbat the Alliance did, bnt If yon ask them abont the good things the Alliance did & tor tanner they seem to have been too busy looking after tbe bad things to find any good In the Alliance! Look dllllgenily for what yon want and yon generally find It! ' ' Anderson, 8. C., Mar. It, 1906. Mr. J. C. Strlbllng, Pendleton, 8. C. ?The question or planting Is now before tbe members of the Union, and the subject of re< dnotton of cotton acreage has been sprung; and I believe every member Is wllllag to no the right thing abont the matter, but don't know what tbat Is. Now It seems to me, Ste'.' tbat tbe only way to make a practical suggestion Is that every man be bis own Judge m tbe premises based on this: Be sure to plant enough grain to make all you need, II a short crop Is made. Now, tbe fellew wbo has to bo? a bushel of corn Is plantlDg loo much cotton, and Is not living up to the doctrine of tbe Unlon,;and Is not a good Union man let blm be whom be may. 8o, brother. If you belong to that list and want the respect ot 1 your Union quit It right now, and take some of tbat land >ou meant to plant In cotton and pnt tt In corn. You are tbe man that we want to reduce. You are not treating yourself nor your brothers right. We ought to put a stop to tbe shipment oroorn to our country. We can dolt and not get hurt, but the oontrary be helpful to ourselves. This Is the doctrine of the Old Orange, which Is one of the fuudbmenlal dootrlnes of the Farmers' Union. How and what to make was the mission of Uie Orange. To supply money to pay lor it was the doctrine or the Alliance. Hence the only new Idea of the Union Is how to get value received for our product. So I do hope that the apologists ror the Grange and the Alliance will cease lorever thtfr soogsof despair. I tor one am convinced that tnere never has been grander successes than the twoabovo named societies, making room ror the Union. They lived to eamblfoh their principles In the hearts aud minds or Uie people and stopped (and died come would ay.) They are not deaa. No, by no means. How to make la still a llvo issue In Its mulllndlDoua form?Improved Implements, improved stock of every description are all tbe doctrines of tbe Orange flrmly engrafted In the minds of tbe people, and tbe Various demands of toe Alliance are being pnt into law as truly as In tbe Orange. So will ihe Union live. We are here to stay, and we are growing as fast as could be expeoted, but It takes time to get anything worth ihe having, besldea tbe bard work. "Bo push along, and shove alone." and let our motto be "kteD moving." Yonrs very respectfully, T. T. Wakefield. In the spriDg time you renovate your ( house, why not your body ?
