"SPINNERS AND BEARS AT MERCY OF FARMERS." Willllprl Reprrmnlallvef of Auoelntlou iu New York, President Harvie Jordan, of the Southern Cotton Association, electrified the gathering of the Georgia division ot the association at the capital Wednesday by bis declaratiou that the spinners of America and Europe, for tbe first time in the history of the south, had noked for a conference with tlie cotton grovera as represented by the association, with a view qf arriving at a i-atisfactory price. The conference will occur in New York on January 24, and representatives of the New England, Manchester (England), and the American Association of Southern Cotton Spinners, will meet repressniatives from the O.?.? ? Uoain A con/liofinn ' T OUUlliCl u vuin'u noouvioiiuui . _ O At Mercy of Grower*. J "This situation," declared Presi- ? dent Jordan, is unique in the history of the south. When our association f. met in Asheville, N. C., on September aud 6, we fixed the minimum price at 11 cents. The bears and spinners, taking advantage of the immediate need of our farmers, drove the priqe down to 9.60. If we sold the remainder of the crop at 15 cents we could pot get an average price fair to the farrper. ' But now we have the betfband the spinners at our mercy. Thf spot situ- 1 ation is absolutely dominated by the men wbo h&ye produced the staple, and this in the faoa of the fact that at the beginning of the season we were confronted with a 14,000,000 bale orop. Wall street has lost the power of making a price. Tb? south now has full power to protect its crop froju the bears and spinners. A " And notf these spinner* have come M tr> iiq and aaki>ri for a conference. It | will occur in New York on January 24, and the representatives of the New England, Manchester (England), and Southern Spiunere' Assor.ation wllJ meet us. " I may say that the assooiatlon has fcept every promise made by the farmers up to thin good hour. " Splutter* Would Not Losn. Mr. Jordan then said that the spinners made more now on l^peut cotton than they did on 5-oent cotton. The mill* would not suffer if the balance of tfee crop sold at 15 cents. The mills ft demanded cotton; there were 5,000,000 new spindles In the south last year. Mr. Jordan urged the financial support of the farmers, and said that Theodore Price spent f50,000 a month advertising his bearish literature. He concluded by urging that the farmers restrict their acreage, and not increase j it next season. He concluded by urging that the various officers of tne or- t ganization keep out of politics. af ?
