We are not presuming to defend Senator Tillman for.any of his sins, which are many. He Is perfectly able to take care of himself, or In case of lallure to do so, is willing to lane me cuusequeucm, ttQui wo protest against Is the prostitution of the columns ot any newspaper In South Carolina for any such purposes as the malicious defamation ol charaoter. Of coarse there is no accounting for what may be said by some pulpiteers who seem ' not to be accountable to any body for any statements which they might make, even it they have.to draw, upon their imagination for facts which are ae baseless as the fabric ofa dream. But newspapers are expected to follow a more correct ilneofconductand mum be governed by higher principle than the defamation of character. Senator Tillman is no doubt responsible for some speeches In the catupaigns which > were not elevating to his hearers. He may have contributed his share of responsibility for the habit ol lynching which prevails in South Carolina but.we protest that he is noi all-powerful. But be has exercised great influence over the State. That Influence is matter of record. Third.?In the organization of Clemsou College. Fourth.?In giving us the dispensary law, whereby prohibition was secured for at leasi twelve hours In the twenty-four hours. Fifth.?In permanently.placing in the organic Jaw of the State a provision which forever eliminates the license system of selling liqnor in South Carolina, It may have been treason to oust the old set of officers. It may have been unjust and wrong to establish colleges for the youth oi the Stnte. It may have been wicked in the Legislature under the influence of Tillman, to eive utprohibition for half of each tweoty-fou: hours with prohibition from Saturday sur.set t< Monday morning?thus saving the Sabbath ' day free from desecration by the liquor dealers, who may not have closed their back doors on Sunday. All these malters are right or wrong, as seen from the view point. Bight or wrong, they are matters of record, and are proper subjects ..f criticism. But honest and lair minded Christians and men who are governed by the proper instincts mast condemn malicious accusations against character. Whether Christian or profane, the grfai public heart loves honesty of speech, and regards Talr play in action as the only true guide. Dr. Stokes, we think, would not lay bis hand on his heart, and nay that be believes of Tillman all Ibe wickedness of which tb< Yorkviile Enquirer speaks. , Those who know Tillman best, whether they like him or not, as far as we have heard, give btm credit for being honest. Those who have most closely watched him In Washington assert that he has cleiin hands, and say that he Is respected for the honesty and the ability which gives hltr. great influence in the Semite. The Press and Banner believes him honest, and believes that charges against his integrity are without foundation In fact. We can ujdtrstand.liow a man may con scleutlously favor prohibition. But we cannot understand bow a consistent Droblbltlonlst can favor the uboiltiun of I lit twelve hours of prohibition that we now have. We can understand the correctness ol prohibitionists seeking to lead prohibition 1st*. But we do not understand how a prohibitionist can quit his own feilows to lead tbi liquor element. We credit Dr. Stofces with having at least ordinary Intelligence and presume that he has at least as much information as the average oltizen. This being true he must know that this fight on the dispensary under the lead of a few prohibitionists Is kept up by those who would restore the bars. Dr. Stokes must have heard that the liquor dealers and their friends as individuals or as associations have fought the dispensary in every concelvaole way. He must have heard of these reports which certainly have as much foundation in tact as the old scandals which be now uses against Tillman, but, which bave long since beendiscarded by the ward politicians. In fighting the dispensary does Dr. Stokes do so with the view of helping the liquor element to break down a law which gives prohibition for twelve hours out of every twenty-four hours? Or, does be know so little as to be.love that the liquor men want prohibition ? The persons and newspapers who are sup. porting the tight against the dispensary are largely, if not quite entirely, of the license element. Who ever heard of a city newspaper advocating prohibition?(except for a little while Captain Dawson did so)?until DUfU DUpputt was glVCU LU UJC pi UUiUl 11UU1HIH in aid of the li"Uor association against tlie dispensary. If prohibitionists would command the favorable opinion of the thinking public, they Bhould be fair and just. The slandering of Tillman will make no converts to temperance, or to morality, or to gootf conduct which would bring people to the higher and the better standards of liv' lng. The General Election. That old gag has been used enough, unless there is some proof ol the truth of the statement. If the Sheriff, Constable or other officers 1 should make an houest effort to protect a prisoner, do you think that he would lock nim up, ham; out a big light to show where ne was iiud then wait for the mob, to whom the keys upon demand, are turned over ? The Govenor and county officers have of late been making very conspicuous and ludicrous pictures of themselves In reference to this lynching business. Down in Kershaw lynchers must be scared -pi nearly to death even as are the Laurens lynchers since the Sheriff of Greenwood is looklDg for tbem. It either of the afore mentioned Sheriffs 'should lay eyes on the lyncher, the aforesaid lyncher might as well go out of business at once. Itiiised llie Price of Cottou.
