Miss Jennie May Dunn of the Due West , Female College came over the latter part of the week before last and stayed at the home of her grandfather, Maj. F. W. It. Nance till last Tuesday. xt. Milton Lee of Anderson came down I yesterday week ago and speut the day at the ; country home of his brother In law. Mr. B. . Berry Allen. Mr. J. T. Latimer arid Magistrate J. G. ! Huckabee went to Abbeville C. H., today ] was a week ago on business. On Tuesday laRt Dr. A. J. Speer and Mr. B. A. Bell were golug to the country place a mile or two out, of the latter, to visit a ' patient 01 me iormer, ?h iucj nwv . down the bill to tbe iron bridge, some part ( of the harness broke and tbe horse not being , willing to be run over by tbe buggy, attempt- 1 e to get out of It and In doing so, as he was J getting up in years and his eyesight as a j consequence somewhat falling, he went inio a pretty deep gully on the side of the road. ( Before tbls hapened Dr. Speer jumped out, 1 Mr. Bell still held to tbe lines and Into the < gully In tbe buggy?then be got out, and as ] the gully was wide enough the horse car- 1 rled the buggy down It a short distance, and I concluded to get out of that place, and In ] doing so, tbe buggy was overturned and was badly smashed up, no body hurl, but may be somewbat scared. Mr. D. L. Barnes went to Atlanta, Ga., I Wednesday to supply himself with some ] needed horses. Mr. A. V. Barnes, went to Anderson, C. H., Wednesday on business. J The up mall train Wednesday on the ] Savannah Valley, R. R. due here at 6.10, P. M. was three hours behind time owing to the ' burning of a trestle on tbe main line below J MoCormlck, the most of the trouble and ex- i pense for repairs upon tbls road is because ofjustsuch mishaps as the above. 1 If "Old Prohs," or who ever has charge of < the business, can't give us better, more up to t date weather than fell to our lot Wednesday i and Thursday be had better sell out to some J one that can. Think of It, sleet was falling ( "fmud dor Anrll < lor some ulub uu iuou>m u?u?v?~ -~r , 20th, and cloudy, cold and disagreeable the . next day. April the month of flowers, and 1 the one la which vegetation puts forth, in I times past used to be an ideal month, but the < present one *o fast pasPlDg by has broken the record for seversl years in its weekly i frosts, ice and cool weather. ] Mr. Claud McAllster of Latimer came up Thursday and was the guest of Kev. H. C. Fennel till the next day. ] Miss Montague Huckabee of Latimer came tip Thursday evening and remained at our 1 home for several days. fr* , A good many years ago, our town In lis onward progress began to "put on airs" and < as one step in its lncrerased Importance the i Council built a calaboose, but ltsoon appeared to be a useless town appendage and was 1 told. Slnoe then, no special use for one has ' been seen till during some of the past few months, when the usual quiet of our place has been disturbed by a too free Indulgence, ; In "boose" and the Council decided to and did raise a fund sufficient to build another ' calaboose to better preserve the peace and J good order of the town. The place for It ? adjoining the western limits of the Providence cemetery on the Bowmans Ferry i' Street has been selected for It, and the lumber is being put upon the ground, and it t Will SOOD be built, xeill IS muttt cerimui^ 2 hoped that the building of It will bave tbe ; name efteot upon tbe dramdrlnkers that ( the building of tbe pest bouse bad upon tt><= I small pox more tban a year ago?It scared oft' , tbe loathsome disease, not a case since. It * need not be expected that It will be found * necessary to put any of tbe colored people iu ( It as they are generally so superstitious that they would almost prefer death Itself to being put into a caloboose so near to a grave- , yard. James Shelby's new show was on board Thursday wltb two performances, the one at t 2. the other at 7,30 p. m. both of which were ( well attended by white and blacK, and from ; what can be gathered from reports the spec 1 tators were generally well pleased. ? Mrs. G. W. Speer of Monterey went to An- ( Homnn rr h. Fridav evening to spend a lew days with her bod who Is Id business ia that prosperous town. c Mr. L. 1*. Harfcoess of Aatrevllle came over Saturday od business. Mr. Jas. T. Latimer went to AndersoQ C. 1 H., yesterday evening od the North bound < traia. For the past few days a force of hands have > made their headquarters here looking after j the Rail Road bridges, trestles, and other ; road property on the gavaonab Valley Railway. They may be here for sometime < yet. Mr. D. L. Barnes treated some of his friends to a big mess of strawberries yesterday. The thing for a man to do to be popular at home when the potatoes are burned is to re fuse to go to somebody else's house to dlDDer next week because be oever gets any thing fit to eat there. Much labor may be saved in washiDg frying-pans if they are wiped out clean j with a piece of paper after the fat is i poured from them. Feeding little chicks on such things js bread and milk may appear to many is beiug too bothersome, etc., but year jfter year the fact is demonstrated that these little matters in feeding push little chicks, so that at the end of the drst week or month they are the equals Df those fed on cracked corn, wheat or rniliet at twice that age. Be sure to start the youngsters oft'right, and keep Lhem growing until they reach either :he frying pan or maturity, as the case may be. A Department of Agriculture bulle:in contains the following on feeding nolasses to horses : G. H. Berne reports the successful feeding of molasses to 100 draft horses, working ten miirs a dav. baulinjr very heavy loads, jsually at a walk. The horses averaged 1,700 pounds in weight and recieved per head, night and raorniug, oue cjt. )f molasses diluted with three quarts )f water and thoroughly mixed with six pounds of cut hay of good quality. 1.5 quarts of cornmeal and 2.5 quarts of joarse brau. In addition they receive 3ve quarts of dry oats in the middle of he day and eleven pounds oflong hay it night. It is reported that thehorses gradually improved in condition ana gained in weight duriug the fourteen uouths covered by the test. ' The best way to clean an invalid's oom is to rub the carpet with a cloth wrung out of ammonia, rinsing and ;urning the cloth as the dust and dirt jollect upon it. Change the water 'requently.
