The Press and Banner. BY HUGH WILSON. ABBEVILLE, S. C. ; *#-Publlshed every Wednesdp at. 82 a year la advance. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1903. t The Tillman Trial. The case of tbe State against James H. Tillman is still In progress at Lexington. Owing te tbe fact tbat last Monday was Kale Day, the Court, when it adjourned on Saturday. stood adjourned until yesterday morning. The State had nearly finished taking testimony. The testimony for the defense will . probably begin today. One of the Jurors was sick on Saturday and It was feared at one time that he would not oe aoie 10 nmsn tne trial, out me news yesterday Indicated that be would be able to proceed with the trial. The case Is Dot without interest, hut it is true that the Interest in the trial is not what was expected. The testimony seems to have brought out very little that was not known before. This, with the belief that the prisoner will not be convicted, has made the proceeding of the trial less interesting than they would have been if there were question or doubt as to tbe result. While it may passlbly be true that some men believe that tbe prisoner ought to be convicted, yet we have no recolleotlon 01 having heard any man say that be thought he would be oonvlcted. By a oopled paragraph from the Augusta Herald it will be seen that a Georgia congressman believes that Tillman will be acquitted. A South Carolina congressman has given expression to the belief that the trial would result in either an acquittal or a mistrial. Thone Window Shatters. Tbe grand jury, fearing no harm and know lng that the.weather was warm, left tbe great plank abutters of their grand jury room standing open all Monday nlgbt. Tbe temptation to Jump through tbe open sash was great, and tbe wonder to us Is that the ghoslb of a glorious past did not, during tbe silent watobes of the night, bold a meeting In tbe aaored precincts to discuss tbe propriety of selling our tobacco warehouse to enable tbe people of this oounty to build a Court House. Kj&i * The grand Jury, if It cannot prevail on tbe proper authorities to build a Court House, might improve matters by renting the billiard room, or the barber shop of tbe .Eureka hotel. Tbe building of a fine hotel overshadows tbe glory and the beauty of our old tobacoo warehouse-, which ought to be moved ofl tbe public square. | Hock Sale. , Some of tbe boys, out of a Joke, auctioned nft Anv oryAot tnKaAAA moooKnnan nnn /Inn 1AB? r_.y vu vut |ivau ivwovuv itmouuuoo uuo ua/ inoi week. It was bid In for 310,003, with the understanding that the shutters were to go with the building. Supervisor Nlckols ban noi approved the sale, and, upon reflection be Is a little careless about selling the shutters. If the shatters were taken off, their absence might Injure thb sale of the ware' house. And then he thinks the officers ought to earn their salary, and this oan be partly done, fooling with the shutters morning and night. Without the shutters the officers would Just lock their doors and go home. Her JewelH. It is said that a Spartan mother when asked for Jewels, pointed to her sons. In like manners Mrs. Gary might point to her sons aB her Jewels. Three of her sons are now ou the Bench of this State. One Is Associate Justice, one is Circuit Judge, and one is Special Judge to bold Court in Lexington ; and the Special Judge is proving himself to be the equal o/ his distinguished brothers.
