tfr v , ' * . . r & The Press and Banner. BY HUGH WILSON. * ABBEVILLE, S. C. n **-Pnhiinhed every Wednesdp at. #2 a year In advance. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1903. Abbeville Is Booming. The Railroad Shops, tbe Cotton Mill, the Furniture Kaotory, the Oil Mill, the UlnDerles, tbe Roller Mill, aDd other Industrial enterprises, pay out large sums of money at tated Intervals with the regularity of the reourrlug days of the calendar. Nearly all this money Is Immediately put Into circulation, and all lines of trade and all values of real property Is affected thereby. Land, or lots, which ten years ago had no market value, are now In demand and bring unprecedented high prices. Instead of sixteen or seventeen stores, that we had Bome twelve years ago, we have nnw cixt.v or more Dl&ces of business. The fail stocks of goods la all lines have drawn customers from remote corners. Tbey feel wben the town Is fall of goods that competition Insures good goods at low prices, and tbey reason well. Our merchants rank among the best and tbe most reliable in tbe State. And tbey are distinguished for their liberality and fair dealing with customers. Since oar people se? the advantage of buildlag up tbe towa, It Is hoped that all may unite lu an effort to make further progress along the Industrial lines. The owner ot real estate Is not so prominently before the buslnesa world as the business man, but the owners of desirable real estate have realized tbe richest harvest tbat ever came to this olty. They have more tangible evidence of prosperity or money-making than anybody else, and yet, as a rule, tbey have contributed hardly a proportionate share of money to the bringing about of these desirable resulU. With the lights beiore our people It is not clear to as wny anyooay hdouiu reiuoe iu oontribute at least a mite to any enterprise that may be proposed. Every step forward baa brought good to tbe town, and as each oew enterprise comes additional good will oome to eaob and all of us, In a business way k or la benefit to real estate. P m r il Whiskey in Augusta. Augusta Is a city of perhaps 60,000 Inhabitants. We believe In that city there are about ninety licensed barrooms. In South Carolina, with a population of 1,250,000 we have only 100 dispensaries. That little olty, then has nearly as many places where liquor may oe naa as me wnoie 01 oouiu urunuu. On the last day of tbe license system Id Sonth Carolina, we bad 999 opea saloons. They occupied tbat number of bouses, and tbe News and Courier estimated tbat la tbe closing or tbe bars 5,000 men were thrown out of employment. - Tbe 100 dispensaries give employment to perhaps 200 men. Tbe central office in Columbia gives employment to several hundred gfr persons. > The dispensaries are closed from sunset to sunrise, and no liquor is sold on Sunday. Tbe houses wblob were onoe used aB grog shops are now used for other purposes. The 5,000 men that were employed In the bars are now on tbe productive side of public economy. The large amount of capital that was once In tbe liquor business is now building up tbe State and developing her resources. If the Augusta Cbronlole could Induce tbe State of Georgia, or tbe city of Augusta, to adopt tbe dispensary system as we have it In South Carolina, that paper would be a public benefaotor for all time to oome. Marriage of Ulna Reese. The marriage of Miss Nelle Reese and Mr^ Mark Willlngham Gantt was the most In* terestlng event in Abbeville, last week, which took place Wednesday evenlog, September 23,1903, Many of our people were present to ?aa/i mlohno nn/4 ArtMjfnlallnno t WU U ?WU, fTWUWJ WM?i HIiUiHVlVUU WW the happy youDg people. Rev. P. B. Welle performed tbe ceremony. The rather of the groom, Mr. 7\ Larry Gantt, well known to the people of thin State, was here to do honor to the occasion. Tbe groom's brothers, Col. Robert Gantt, Seoretary of State, and Mr. Gaatt of Alabama were also among tbe honored guests. The bride received many testimonials of love'and affection and she went away tbat same night carrying with her the good will of all. Tbe bride 1b tbe second daughter of Mr. Ha D. Reese. Because of old association in tbe war with Dr. Richard Gantt, uncle of tne groom, the occasion was of more tban passing Interest to tbe Press and Banner. Dr. Dlok Gantt was a good and honest man, who was sunshiny in disposition and in character true to all the better impulses. Printing Office Burned. The offioe of tbe Brewer Company at Greenville. was partially destroyed by lire last Sun. day nlgbt. Including tbe offloe of tbe Greenville Dally Herald. Tbe Herald comes oat as asoal, belDg printed In tbe Mountaineer olfloe, and work on tbe contracts of tbe Brewer Printing Company has been resumed. We trust tbat tbe brethren may realize only a temporary loss, and tbat only good lack may come to tbem In tbe future. Saved Through an Application of Electricity. Mrs. Jefferson Davis at Buffalo, N. Y.. has been at tbe point of deatb for several days bat took a tarn for tbe better on Sunday, and bopes are now entertained tbat she may be well again. Tillman's Trial. As a lover fair play, tbe Press and Banner Is glad tbat Mr. Jobn R. Barke of tbe Aagusta Cbronlole Is among tbe newspaper reporters, attending the trial of James H. Tillman at Lexington. Tbat reporter seems to understand the situation, and to speak with a fair, ness and an Impartiality tbat will Impress to lovers of fair play. The greatest effort has been and will be made to oonvlot blm and on the other band, the greatest effort bas been and will be made to bave blm acquitted. The Jury will not now be allowed to read the newspapers, and personal opinion, or personal appeal to the public, cannot at tbli time affect the result. If there ever was a time when the newspapers would influence the Jury in this case, tbat time bas passed. .Tndelnn' however, from the tone and tam per of some of the newspaper article# It wonld seem tbat there is doubt on the part of the ''V ' .. prosecution.
