Columbia, January 21?Special: From tfme to time attempts have been made to give the actual number of spindles In this State. It seems to be a rather difficult matter to get at the correct number of spindles and looms that are in operation in South Carolina. A great many of the cotton mill officers are indiffereut about giviugout this information, and while various attempts have been made to get the data correctly, It seems to have been impossible to do so. It has beeu my purpose to get up a statement showing the exact number of spindles in this State, and with this in virw, while visltimc the various mill communities, I have undertaken to get the correct information from the mMl officers. In some cases it has been secured by direct correspondence, and it was also sought 'rwn brokers in cotton mill stocks, as well as from various other sources. 1 think that the list here presented Is about as correct as can be gotten at this time, and it is the moat complete and up-to-date that Is available. ?. nnmhar nt ?niridlm in thin Kt*t to-dav to be practically 2,623,099. This statement may not be correct, but it is the best that can be done under tbe circumstance*, and is presented for what it is worth. Mr. Sbeppereon, in bis ootton statistics, places the number of'live" spindles in operation in South Carolina at 2,152,928. Mr. Wbaley, iu a recent talk of his, placed the number of spindles In South Carolina at 2,400,000, but from tbe figures here g[ven, it is very much safer to place tbe number of spindles in South Carolina, including those that are determined upon and those being installed, at 2,740,000.
