A Comprehensive and impartial Review of the nrAarocit Manufacturing industry in the I??v VI ? . w . O s State With Special Attention to the Much Discussed and Much-Distorted Child Labor Question. I TABULATED ftTATEMEffT OF THE RFIXDLEfl Iff THE TARIODI COT* TO* MILLN OF HOCTH CAKOMffA. Columbia, January 21?Special: From time to time attempts have been made o give the actual number of spiudlea in thin State. It seems to be a rather dificult mailer to get at the correct number of spindles and looms that are in op -HI ~ .?Inilir. 'ration in South Carolina. A great many 01 me txnum aim umven ?.? erent about giving out this information, and while various attempts have been nade to get tbe data correctly, it seems to have been impossible to do so. It las been my purpose to get up a statement showing the exact number of spinlies in this State, and with this in view, while visiting the various mill comnunities, I have undertaken to get the correct information from the mill officers, n some cases it has been secured by direct correspondence, and it was also pught froui brokers in cotton mill stocks, as well as from various other sources, tbiuk that the list here presented is about as correct as can be gotten at this ime, and it is the most complete and up-to-date that is available. It shows the uumber of spindles iu this Stat to-day to be practically 2,623,099. [bis does not count the spindles that are to be put la operation during 1903. This statement may not be correct, but it is tbe best that can be done under be circumstances, and is presented for what it is worth. Mr. Sbepperoon, in ils cotton statistics, places the number of "live" spindles ill operation in South Carolina at 2,152,928. -- .... - ?- - .!!, ?rMM ?1?<*ari fh? number of unhidles in South Mr. WDJUey, iu m icwih ? . ... u?, _ Carolina at 2,400,000, but from the figures here g[veu, it is very much safer to I >lace the number of spindles iu South Carolina, including those that are deermined upon and those beiug installed, at 2,750,000. Five yearn ago there came a man to the city who had been a farmer and country merchant in a neighboring State. He brought a few hundred doP lan with him and lost it trying to keep a store in a suburb. He got tick and was cared for by some people who --- ?- 1?A nA?a Knew mm, ana oa rtvovwjr u? uv> . dollar uor a relative in the State, fie ?u 00 years old, and one foot waa disabled. He bad before him visioua of tbe poor house, or a walk back to his old home. He thought the matter of his future was a plain down grade to a poor relation's grave. Just at this juncture a man whom be had known in tbe past invited him to spend a week with him in the county lie went and the pure air and reet put hope in his beert and he proposed to care for tbe cattle and the fowls on the place for bli board, and the offer waa accepted. I le vorked all that winter on these terms. At night the old man, whnM mime mav be called John Jonea, plaited some door mats of ahucka for the house mud a large one for hia own room which had no carpet. He could uot read by lamplight and continued to plait on mats of shucks and graw, anu found that be could Ml! them readily in the city. Wben the aprinr work begun Jones bad $45 in amafl money, waved from bia mat aalea. He resolved to try for himself again and rented Home land near bia friend and mLocked it with fowls and hogs. He continued to feed hia friend'a stock for bis board and worked a small crop of bin own, of vegetable* and potatoea. He paid his rent and had $115 when winter begun and felt rich. He bought 40 acres of land 20 acres of it already cleared and worn out, for $200. There wan a fence but no housee, a good well and some peaches and plum trees iu healthy condition, tie Dougnt me land at $t$6 2-3 cash, and the balance iu one and two yearn. With his own hand* Mr. Jones built a chicken house, a stable and pig lot, all of pine pole*, during the winter, and worked for his friends an usual. Hia fool never got well and be hobbled the mile between the two plaee* back and fourth. He made a little money with hia fowl* and hogs, his door mats aud baskets, plaited of sbucka and grass. The baskets were so thick that egg* could be kept in them in the winter without freezing. He bought some lumber and helped a "saw and hatchet carpenter" to build him a one* room cabin ou his land, which cost him $28. With a little more than #50 in cash he moved to hia new boose. using a shelf for a bed, and witb 5# worth of furniture ?nd cooking utenni 1h, be went to work for himself, full of hope and energy. A He had no reasonable success, but - he had food for the winter and nearly $200 on the tint of October. When bia next note for hi? land fell due he paid both note*, made bis room comfortable with|furniture and utensils, and went 1 to work as usual on his baskets and mats and bought a cow and a horse, both on credit from neighbors. He killed and sold eleven hogs and got for them, paid (or bis cow. worth $15, and paid $15 on the debt for the horse, which co?t him $So, When spring came again Mr Jones found himself with very little money, but with seed and utensils, fences in Infect condition, and with a calf to soil, butter to sell, fruit lookiug well, fouls in plenty aud twelve boss and pig*. His horse was his only debt. He could not plough and bad to depend on his Fruit, berries, fowls, butter and (its garden. All did fairly well and the horse was paid for, a comfortable tiroroom cottage built, two more cows purchased and a pole baru built, to hold the potatoes, pumpkins, ouious aud the hay he saved for the horse. There was *1-*" on hand in cash. The tirst'rabiu was turned over to a niau and his wife, who wanted to cultivate the laud, and la-st year the old worn-out patch looked like a prosper* ous farm. The gullies were filled, anb potatoes and Kurdeu stuff were raised in abuudn uv The whole place was alive will fo" Is and a pretty herd of cows ra .gei. the couutry near the farm. The y<ar has lieeu a good one, and Mr. Jones has no debt, has some mouey, a g?*?d horse aud buggy, and while a little more gray and a little more lame, ?loe? not have any fear of the alniM hoUM, for he could easily itell hi* belougiufjn for $U,0U0, and it produces for him more money than be needs uiui every oomfort and go?Hi IR-HUIl.
