EAST END. What "M" Sees and Hears on His Rounds.in Country and in Town. g V. Abbeville, 8. C., Feb. 19,1902. CARRIERS SONG. -Oh swift ve go o'er the fleecy snow When sunbeams sparkle round, Whati boob keep time to music's cm me I As merlly on we bound." So went the Carriers last Saturday morning when the earth was olothed In her mantle of white, and all nature presented to the eye a landscape ol beauty lovely to behold. Yes they went merliy on enjoying the beautiful Boenery on every baud, nothing daunted by the ooki mantle of winter, wblcb was spread over the earth. The mall boxes oovered with now looked like mlnature bouses, wherein /alrles mlghs dwell. Many were the ejaculations or wonder, at the Carriers being out on such a day, and one kind trlend remarked that "he thought the best thing the patrons oould do would be to snowball the carriers aod turn tbem right about for home." I We were Invited to dine at the hospitable home of Mr. Wm. MoKenzle, but as we came to a halt we saw several pretty young ladies standing In the doorway and beard soft whisperings from tbem saying, "let's snowball nlm," this was enough, so we excused ourself - /. as politely as we knew bow and drove onnot for fear of being pelted with snow, but because we couldn't bear the loea of rolling the ladles in tne snow, ior you suu# it ui^ut make them slot, and then we could not have forgiven ourselves. The Americau people never will cou- v Bent to having this country advertined 1 as having been worn out and beaten by a lot of part Chinese, part Indian, and part Spanish semi savages. We might explain until doomsaay, and we never would be able to make them g believe that they had not whipped us out: and the world would take their t view. The American flag could not show itself on that side of the Pacific f without being iusulted, and probably } the results would be that we would I have to stay away from there entirely ? or fight half a dozen more wars to prove that we can and will fiijht. This ? fight is on, whatever the merits of the case may have been originally, and thore is nothiner to do but to fight it out to tbe finish, whatever the cost or consequences. Therefore, what good ; is to be done by forcing 8,11 this row and blather and hard language in con- , gress? We have plenty of home issues to fight on, if we have the courage j and secure the unity to make the fights. If the Philippine issue is the ' only one on which the party can be , sufficiently united to make a show of a fight in Washington, the party is in a mighty bad row of stumps, and the sooner we seek and develop some new leadership the better.?Richmond i News. j More scbool books Just received. Who the lady was who wrote th ompanion verges to tne Wildo poea s not known to the present wwter >ut the following is culled from an ol< slipping from a South Carolina peri tdical published many years ago. Messrs. Editors, the poetry of R. H iVilde, beginning : "My Life is Lib i Summer Rone," is found in th >eriodi<;als of the day. He will probably lie knowu b; t in future ages, as Wolfe is by hi mrial. of Sir John Moore, and Gra; ly bis Elegy. It is not, however, so well knowi hat a lady of Baltimore, met the dis Inguished advocate iu the Court of th dunes and replied with much fore .no almost equal equal beauty. A be stanzas of each are not found ii onneciion, it is proposed to give thos f Wilae separately, and iu a simila pay the lady's answer In reply : Below is given the well-know: tanzas of Mr. Wilde and the verse f the Baltimore lady : WILDE. My life is like a Rammer rose That opens to tbe morning sky, But ere tbe shades of evening close, Is scattered on tbe ground to die. Yetob tbat rose's bumble bed, Tbe sweetest dews of night are shed, As If she wept such wase to see, But none shall weep a tear for me. Mv life Is like tbe autumn leaf Tbat trembles In the moon's pale rayIts bold Is frail. Its date Is brief, Restless, and soon to pass away. Yet ere tbat leaf shall fall and fade, Tbe parent tree shall mourn Its shade, Tbe wind bewail tbe lealless tree, But none shall breathe a sigh for me. Tby life is like the prints which feet Have left an Tempo's desert strandSoon as the rising tide shall beat. All trace will vanish from the sand, Yet, as If grieving to efface All vestige of tbe human race On that lone shore, loud moans the sea. But none alas ! shall mourn for me. LADY. The dews of night may fall from heaven. Upon the withered rose's bed, , And tears of fond regret be given To mourn tbe virtues of tbe dead. Yet morning's sun tbe dews will dry, And tears will fade Irom sorrow's eye, Affection's pangs be lulled to sleep, Aud even love forget to weep. The tree may mourn the fallen leaf, And autumn winds bewail Its bloom, And friends may heave tbe sigh nf grief O'er those who sleep beneath the tomb. Yet soon will spring renew the flowers, And time will bring more smiling bourfl ; In friendship's heart all grief will die. And even love forget to slgb. Tbe sea may on the desert shore Lament each trace it bears away; Tbe lonely heart Its grief may pour O'er cherished friendship's fast decay. Yet when all track Is lost and gone, The waveB dance bright and gaily on ; Thus soon affection's bonds are torn, And even love forgets to mourn. Never begin a day without an inter riew with God iu prayer, and ove our Bible, then your steps will be or lered safely. Our real danger is not from witbou mt from ourselves.
