THE FAIR ASl) CARNIVAL 18 OVER, And all are agreed that 11 was a grand success. The city wa.s fllied 10 overflowing every day, and every one seemed happy, and lu lovi aud peace with all mankind, and enjoy ed the Carnival to tne utmost. Friends greeted each other ; and many were overjoy ed at meeting those Iroru whom tliey had been separated many long years; this to out mind was one ol the prime leutures of ihtoccatiou, bringing the people together, THE EXHIBITS, In the Art and Fancy goods department was very tine, beautllul pictures, and exquisite /anoy work were to be seen, every where. This department would do credit to the County at the mate Fair. THE HOUSEHOLD DEPARTMENT was well-fllled with quite a variety of such goodB as canued fruits, Jellies, wines, sauces, pickle and many other uice tblugs, all ot which attracted the careful attention of every one. The display , lu this department was very good Indeed. THE AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT, We regret to say did not come up to our expectations, the display belug entirely loo small. The products shown were very good, but not enough In variety, aud numbers to reflect credit upon the Agricultural interests of this grand old county, or do credit to the farmers. There was great room la this de partment for vast improvement. THE MINERALS. In this depaitment were to be seen a very creditable exhibit ot Qne specimens of ore iu gold, sliver, iron, mica and other metals, presenting to the explorer great fields, rich in r.hfuiH hidden treasures, which will some day be unearthed and scattered amuuK our people. THE LIVE STOCK. Tbl? was good, aod while It was creditable, might bave bee a larger. Some flue specimens o( boooe raised horses were to be seen, Tbere were also a floe lot ol cow?, sheep, bogs, and goals, which uiade one tbluk of ibe good old lime ibat "used 10 be" dowu In Dixie, but are uow numbered wltb the past, goue, never to return. THE POULTRY DISPLAY was exceedingly fine, and In greater variety tban was really expected. Tbere was a larger and liner display of Plymouth Kock* tban In any one breed. In this department were also fine specimens 01 turkeys, geese aud ducks. This was a noisy place and Claimed its share of admiration, lrom fanciers and all admirers of the leathered trice. 4 THE BISCUIT CONTEST. This scene presented one of the "pictures" of the Cxrnlval. A real life pioture that holds a very Important place In every home. It was a lively and sharp contest between a large number of young ladles, all of whom did their best, each aod everyone of them making biscuits fit 10 set beiore a "King," but Miss Maud Kay bore ofi the laurels ol the contest, by making the best bisculis, and was awarded the splendid cook stove and utensils, presented by the Abbeville Hardware Compauy, valued at 325. Miss Kay Is a nelce of Mis. kllllogsworth of this city nod is ooe of tbe bright pupils of tbe Abbeville Graded School. TUB TRADE'S DISPLAY. In tbls procession was to be seen the artistic skill and up to date push of some of our most prominent merchants, who put themselves before tbe public, so that their names and places of business will not soon be (orgotten. Some of tbe floats deserve special mention, but they were all so pretty and arranged with such exquisite taste that we forbear, and pass them all as one of the wpeclal hits of the occasion. THE GRAND FLORA L PARADE Was grand, unique and novel, making up one of tbe brightest and prettiest picture of the Carnival. Home of tbe decorations were simply beautiful and called forth tbe admiration ol every one. Tbe most beautiful of all tbls long line of equipages was the carriage upon which tbe Queen and her lovely maids were seated attended by two out-rlders, and lour liverymen, dressed in Eure while, each leading one of tbe white orsea attached to the Queen's carriage, which was draped In white and gilt, with two large butterflies, white and gilt, most artlxcally arranged on the front of the carriage. The beautiful qneen, Miss Willie Calhoun was seated high upon her ihroue from which she looked upon the surging crowd with a pleasant smile, which seemingly said, I am glaatosee those of my subjects who would thus honor trie so very happy, aud wish for and tbls people long life and great prosperity. CHILDREN'S DAY. Thli was the "Hid Letter" day of the Carnival, hundreds of nappy children beaded by a band of muslo to wlilcb tbey kept lively KteD. marching from the school building to the Court Houne, where they were eutertalned by an addre?s from Mr. McLeese, whose reputation as a speaker always goes ahead ol lnm. Mr. McLees Is a happy bit on such an occasion. The Court House wan literally Jammed aud packed, while crowds mood upon the steps waiting to see If they might perchance get In. veterans parade. Several hundred of those honored old roIdiers kept measured tread to the splendid mr-ilDH of in irt al music and marched as In "days gone by." The heads of many of these Veterans are now whitened by the frosts ol many winters. Their step has grown feeble and their eyes dim, but that courage aud berolsm that made them gallant, brave and true, as "soldier boys" lingers still. 1 bey marched to the Court House and were addressed by llev. J. Liowrle Wilson, Hon. J J. Hemphill and others. The company of these old hero's is growing smaller as the years go by. One by one they are "crossing over (he river aud resting under the shade ol tbe trees." athletic sports Interested a large crowd on the public square and were a source of fun and frolic to all, especially the "cake walk." trotting match. This brought forth many fine horses, which were speeding around the public square ou full time. Tho cod lest was sharp and spirited and was entered Into by a number of horsek men. A pretiy horse and a fine driver always claim the attention of all, especially the ladies. Tbe gala days of the Abbeville County Kalr and Carnival have passed, and the Committees deserve the thanks of all Interested Tor their untiring energy, promptness and effi clency In the management ol their various departments.
