Tbe Seeular Paper and tbe fbarchen. Associate Reformed PreBbyteian. Complaint is often made that the ( secular papers devote so little attention to the churches and *>ive such i poor accounts of religious meetings, , Tbi? may be true of the great met- , ropolitan dailies, particularly those of J the "yellow" type, but it is not true t of many of the dailies iu the smaller , cities and towns, aud it is especially ( not true of the county papers. One , reason why they do not publish more , is probably because the information is , not accessible to them. Surely in this t section of our land the Churches re- . reive good treatment at the hand oi \ of our newspapers. You can scarcely pick up one without seeing some an- , nouncement published without charge, ( some report of a meeting, some ref- j ereuce to the work of a congregation, , or some kind and complimentary , notice of a pastor. Our denomination \ has been particularly foruuate. We , do not know of an account of our Church courts that ever t-ent the pa- , pers that was not published. Our j constituency in any given State is small yet the papers have passed that by and inserted what was written. To ( our congregation the local papers, wherever publsbed, are very kind in- , deed. This true in all of the States. Almost without exception wherever | we have a church iu a town where a 1- i;~? a 5r, paper 18 puoiisueu, iuui |>apci 13 wwplimentary to our work aud renders , invaluable assistance. Jt is constantly saying a kind word about the pastor and the progress of the Chuch. Many j-ecular papers would render still more aid if the pastors aud Church people would put themselves to a little trouble to give the necessary information. A eteadfast purpose, diligently pursued, is the onfy path to an overcoming life. Not to minister but to be ministered unto is the theory with which some aetout in life; not to give but to get. and that ends always in soul poverty aud loneliness. Foolish waste of life is pitiful to see; and the bitterness it brings in the end to the discontented soul is beyond words to express. We can only have the highest happiness having wide thoughts and mucb feeling for the re?t of the world as well as ourselves. It is in our own power to attune the mind to cheerfulness and clearness. Many Christians arelike the Leaning Tower of Pisa?as far gone from up Tightness as it is possible to go without toppling over. Never part without loving words to think of during your absence. It may be that you will not meet again in lire. Good thoughts are blessed gusts, and should be heartly welcomed, well fed, and much sought after. Like rose leaves, they give out a sweet smell if laid up in the jar of memory. Out of the hardest experiences of struggle and sacrifice we get the qualities that are the brightest ornaments of our character and the noblest elements of out strength. If we could get any appreciation of what God has in reserve for us, it would make us so homesick we would be unfit for our every-day work. Diamonds are formed in nature at enormaus temperature and under immense pressure. It melts the heart to think that God is as full of mercy as I am of sin ; he is as free to forgive as I am to offend ; he hath daily Mercies for daily sins. He said that he had fallen T jo low in life that there was no place 'or him but the gutter; that existence ai iad become a burden, and that he *auted to die. Today this youug a nan is a prosperous merchant in New i'ork city. He has told Success that lr lis position is due to tbe advice given ki ay John Slierman, in answer to his v< etter, and that magazine was given to ^ermispion to publish the letter, which be owner guards more carefully than ti ill his possessions. Mr. Sherman rc a* rote. w Your say that your life has been a ei "ailure, and that you are thirty years fl< ild, and ready to die. You say that di you cannot liud work, and that you Fi lee no hope in life. You say that your Fi riends do not care to speak to you Fi low. Let me tell you that you have reachid that point in life when a man must tee the very b^st prospects for his fu- tb ;ure career. You at thirty stand on at ;he bridge that divides youth and Cc nanhood. The one is dying, perhaps, jut the other will soon burst, young id ind hopeful, from the ashes, and you T< ivill find in yourself a new being?a nan. Do not let your discontent kill T< his new life before it is born. Unless you are physically deformed, ;o to work. Uo to work at any houist work, i!' it only brings you a dollar i day. Pay no more than ten cents a Tc ileal, and twenty cents for a bed, and F< lave as much of the balauce as you can, ind with the same intensity as you ad .vould save your mother's life. Make re ;he most of your appearance. Do not in Iress gaudily, but cleanly. Abandon ' iquor as you would a pestilence, for di iquor is the curse that wrecks more co ives than all the horrors of the world to :ombined. be If you are a man of brains, as your ' 1 /-???A o mo t r\ KaIiauo VA11 Q ro flf CLICi xuauo LUU liv vviivv j wu Ml V| w vait until you are in condition to seek wi four level, aud theu seek it with cour- on ige and tenacity. It may take time ' o reach it, it may take years, but you ?u vill surely reach it?you will turn rom the worKiugmau into the busi- to less man, or the professional man, at vith so much ease that you will marvel at it. But have one ideal, and tb lim for it. No ship ever reached it's Dort by sailing forju dozen other ports it the same time. Be contented, for without content- _ nent there is no love or friendship, ind without those blessings, life is, X ndeed a hopeless case. Learn to love your books, for there is pleasure, in- e struction and friendship in books. Go g :o church, for the church helps to ease the pains of life. Listen to music whenever you can, for music charms the mind aud fills a man with lofty ideals. . Cheer up! never want to die. Why ^ f am twice vour aire, and over, and I ilo uot want to die. Get out into tbe world. Work, eat, sleep, read and ^ talk about the great events of tbe day, a even if you are forced to go among la- * borers. Take tbe first honest work A you can get, and tben be steady, pa- a tient, industrious, saving, kind, polite, ? studious, temperate, ambitious, gentle, ? loving, bonest, strong, courageous and a contented. 4 Be all tbese, and when thirty years ? more have passed away, just notice L how young and beautiful the world is, l and how young and happy you are.
