One day last week a "colored lady" drove Sn the cltj and asked Mr. Maxwell, one of our city butchers if lie bought bogs? He replied "I do." whereupon she told htm If he would send out to her home he oould get a "fine" hog. Mr. Maxwell at once sent out bis driver, borse and wagon, while the "lady" waited bis return ; after a drive of four miles, the driver returned bringing a "tine hog" (a pig) that would net up about two pounds of sausage. Mr. Maxwell has since been trying to figure out whether to charge tbe pig to profit or loss account. He still sells sausage and is in the "hog" business to stay. SI-RING OPENINGS AT ABBEVILLE. , Last Wednesday and Thursday the days announced for tbe grand display of new .Spring goods at the different Emporiums of Fashion In our city were as lovely ub a summer's dream. The sun shone brightly, while the birds flitted from tree to tree, singing their sweetest songs and the air was tilled with the sweet perfume of many flowers. Our ladles turned out "en masse," many coming 4n from the surrounding country. R. M Haddon <? Co., had a large and magnificent display of beautiful goods, while their millinery department was a veritable "flower garden," bright and beautiful on every side. C. W. Kendall presented a display of goods that astonished and called forth tbe admiration of all. In hia millinery department ali the styles of the season were most artistically arrauged so as to make a display within Itself altogether lovely. A. H. S. Day made a most attractive dieplay, showing by a most unique, and artistic arrangement all the styles of the season in dress goods and millinery. His millinery parlor was beautifully arranged, flowers here and there, fitting emblems of tbe opening of Spring. Judging from the crowds of ladleB that thronged our city and the magnificent and attractive display, we would say tbe Spring opening of 1901 was a great success and will speak volumes to the pralseof the merchants not only in the city, but throughout tbe country as well. Coleman, one of the bustling salesman from Abbeville, is in tbe city for a few days. Mr. J. S. Gilmer, of Selma, Ala., arrived in tbe city last week to pay bis last tribute of love and affection to an bonored mother, whose facebe bebeld for the last time, her gentle spirit having been called from eartb just before bis arrival. Mr. Gilmer left last Monday for his far away borne, carrying with blm a sad heart. FARMING INTERESTS. LaBt Monday tbe weather did not leel like planting cotton, although numbers of our farmers were ready. Corn planting Is now in season and we are glad to note a good acreage will be planted. Wheat and oats are looking fine, already making quite a show. Subject parable of the "loaves and I fishes," in which be brought out most vividly ' tbe miracle working power of Christ, who i always worked conjointly, and co-operated i with tbe Father, by which he showed that we 1 too must co-operate with tbe Master, by using I always tbe means at band for the best inter- I estsof His work, as well as by consecration I of self and all to Him and bis service, and thereby having for our aim a higher, purer i and hatter life. At the conclusion of tbe < sermon a cburch meeting was called, which i had been announced previous to tbe beglnlng 1 of tbe services In which he requested tbe i membership to remain, however a large number left In tbe face of tbe urgent request, and without even betDg dismissed, which called forth the remark "that tbey might with tbe same propriety have left when the sermon was half finished, as when they did , as the services were not yet concluded." Judge Lyon as Sunday School Superlnten- ; dent made a good report as to the progress ol the Sunday School, and expressed himself as I being very gratelul for services by extra teachers. Mr. C. V. Hammond showed by actual J figures that about SO per cent of our membership attended regular services, while about 20 per cent only attended the weekly prayermeetings. This Is in Itself alarming and furnishes food for thought when the Import* ant question is asked, "where are the balance of the membership; have they no later- | est in the affairs of the church, and no earnest zeal for the upbuilding of the Master's cause? Walker has selected the Southern Railway as the "official route" for the Veterans of the South Carolina Division, United Confederate Veterans, to the Reunion to be held in Memphis, Tenn., in May next. Tbe following letter was received by Division Passenger Agent Robt. W. Hunt, of the Sonthem Railway yesterday. "Charleston, March 9.1901. Mr. R. W. Hunt, Division Passenger Agent. Southern Railway Company, Charleston, S. THE ROAD LAWS iomelhiuic That May Be of lutereftt to Yon. The County Board of Commissioners shall livide the respective townships into suitable ond districts. They shall elect an overseer vhose term of office shall be two years, and if le falls or refuses to serve shall be fined S10.00 ind costs or be sentenced to the County chuln tang. That If a vacaucy occurs from any sause. the Board shall elect his successor. And the overseer has tbe right to appoint a man to serve who is liable to road duty, and le shall be exempted Irom road duty rb iong sir he serves as overseer, It shall be the duty of every overseer to nakeout a list of all persons liable to road iuty belonging to his section, and the overleer is authorized to demand of any person >r corporation, the names of any and all sands in his, her and Its employ. And should any person or corporation, refuse to 'urnish such list tbe overseer shall at once report the matter to the nearest magistrate, and rause such persons to be prosecuied. Overseers are also authorized to appoint iome suitable persoD, liable to road duly on lis road, as a warner, and such person shall je exempt from road duty for the time he acts is warner. And the overseer having furnished said warner with a list of tbe hands liable o road duty, tbe said warner shall serve lotlce on each and every hand, either by leelng the parlies personally and giving verbal notice, or by leaving written notice at he residence of the party, of the hour and Dlace of working on said section; and the aerson so warned shall bring with hlra such lecessary tools and implements used on n 'arm as the overseer may direct. All of the lands belonging to and assigned to a road iectlon are to work under tbe direction and the supervision of the overseer. Overseers are also required to take good care of all tools tarnished tnem by tbe county, and not permit or suffer them to be used for any purpose Jther than the working of tbe public high ways, and to account to the county commissioners for all tools in their possession and the manner and kind of labor performed on their section, and turn overall tools to their successors. Kaoh overseer may erect and keep up at tbe expense of the county at the lorks and jrossroads, a post and guide board or finger Doard containing an Inscription in legible letters, directing the way and distance to tbe town or towns or public place and places situated on each road. And the overseer is iutborized to prosecute any one who defaces >r demolishes tbe same. Each overseer will have all small bridges >n bis section put down and kept in repair by tbe road bands?tbe county paying lor lumber and nails only. It is unlawful for any overseer to perform, jr cause labor to be performed, on Boy road sot regularly laid out and established by law. It is unlawful for any railroad company to JOStruci any puunu rutiu or iuo uraiuo^o u> tbe same, or to empty the water from Its lltcbes Into any public road. Any any over leer of tbe proper district is authorized to warn any railroad company by leaving a written notice with any agent, or informing my agent of said railroad oompany personally, to remedy all such matters to tbe acceptance of the ovei seer. Should suob company refuse to do so. tbe overseer shall at once report tbe matter to tbe supervisor. An overseer who neglects or refuses to cause four days labor to be performed on bis section annually, is liable to prosecution. WHO LIABLE TO ROAD DOTY. In York oounty all male persons able to perform road duty between the ages of IS and ? years, exoept ministers of 21 to 50 years tbe gospel in actual charge of a congregaton and old soldiers, are required annually to perform, or cause to be performed, four days' labor on tbe public highway under the direction of tbe overseer of the road district In which be resides, and ten hours of labor shall constitute a day's work. Any one liable to road duty Is allowed In lieu thereof to pay % commutation tax of $1.00 to tbe county treasurer, which for the ye&r 1901 may be paid at any time oil or before the 1st day of February, and. for each year thereafter, such lax must be paid on or by tbe first day of February. And If any person, being warned &y such overseer as aforesaid, shall refuse or neglect, having bad at least 12 hours' notice, to attend by himself or substitute to tbe acceptance of the overseer, or, having attended, shall refuse to obey the direction of the overseer, or shall spend tbe time in Idleness or my Inattention to tbe duties assigned blm, ?ball be guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction thereof, shall be fined not more :han 810.00 nor less than 86.00 and costs, or be sentenced to tbe county cbalngang not more tnan ten nor less than Ave days, and it is tbe duty of tbe overseer to carry out tbe provisions of tbis section. Tbe residence of any person who has a (anally, is, where his family resides, and the residence'of any other person is where be boards or may be found. Ali tramps and persons who have no visible means of support are liable to road duty wherever they may be found. HOW KOADS OUGHT TO BE WORKED. * The roadbed shall not be less than 16 nor more than 20 feet wide, exclusive of ditches, roots and runners, unless so ordered by tbe Bounty board of commissioners. It shall be tbe dfcty of each and every overseer to work the roads under bis charge thoroughly as be goes, aroblng tbe same to the centre, with Drain on each side to convey tbe water, and when necessary to protect such drains rrom washing by placing in stone, gravel or other substanoe; whenever it is necessary to convey water to or to provide for it to cross any road, be shall have the drain across such road laid in stone, gravel or other bard substance, when such material Is conveniently obtainable, and or such width as to afford an easy crossing where a bridge may not be necessary ; and be sball protect the roads by suitable drains from interierence by cultivation or otherwise; be sball open or cause to be opened, all public roads or highways which have been or may hereafter be laid Dot and established in bis road district, and remove or cause to be removed, all obstructions that may from time to time be found therein, but shall not run a new road in less lhan ntty yams or a uweuing nouBe wimoui the consent of the owner. The County Board of Commissioners are lutboiized to levy an annual tar not exseeding: one mllfron all the taxable property af the County, wblcb Bball be expended on Lbe roads In the same manner as the commutation road tax. If any person has been convicted of any of the crimes above-mentioned, a pardon of the Governor removes the disqualification. In case any minor who will become twenty-on^ years of age after the closing of th Books of Registration and before the election, and is otherwise qualified to register, makes application under oath showing he is qualified to register, the Boards shall register such applicant before the closing of the books. Any person whose qualifications as an elector will be completed after the closing of the Registration Books but before the next election shall have the rigbt to apply for and secure a registration certificate at any time within sixty days immediately preceding the closing of the Registration Books, upon an applicatidn under oath to the facts entitling him to such registration. The registration of voters must be by polling precincts. There must be a Book of Registration for each polling > precinct, that is for eaca townsmp, or parish, or city, or town of less than five thousand inhabitants, or ward of cities of more than five thousand inhabitants. Each elector most vote in the polling precinct in which he resides. If there is more than one voting place in the polling precinct, the elector may vote at any voting place designated on the registration, certificate. The Boards must designate in the registration certificate the voting place iu the polling precinct at which the elector is to vote.
