New York, Jan. 28.?Never In the knowledge of the oldest traders has the cotton market shown the abnormal conditions existing too ay. It Is no unusual thing to w linens a "squeeze" at the end of the season, but n corner In January Is something; out oftbe ordinary. Yet a January "squeeze" bus been worrying shorts in tbe cotton market here for some time past Some believed tbat the deal culminated today with a rise of 225 points; others believe tbat tbe actual liquidation has not been fully completed, and tbat therefore tbere may be further sensational developments. Tbe market, beyond tbe special attention given to January, has been almost lifeless. Closing Saturday 10.20, January opened this morning at 10.30 and advanced rapidly to 12.75. Tbe market broke later to 11.50, which was tbe level at noon. Tbe greatest Jumps were from 10.80 to 12.00, from 12.25 to 1250. tbence to 12 75. At the latter point n New York concern representing big New England interests, commenced to sell right and left, and a little laieraQreek house also sold. This stopped tba rise and the market staggered oiTto 1150. The air was filled with rumors of cotton to be delivered iromr ail Kiver anu Huipiu*-uiH are known to have been made this mornlDg by expreM, guaranteed to be here In time for January delivery. About 30,000 bales January changed bands before noon. It does not follow that long Interest was liquidated to tbls amount as the clique bought as well an sold. There was a sympathetic rise in Feboary and March, the former selling as high as 960 and the latter at 9.44, while the excitement Id January was the greatest; but the general ll^t made a reluctant advance of only 3 and 6 points and ruled very dull. During the rest of the afternoon the cotton market ruled quiet with January closing 11.05, a net advance of 8} points for the day, and and the other months 1 point higher to three lower. In accordance with the advance in January soot cotton sold at 12 cents-an advance of l%c. for the day. Washing: Blanket*. Have your blankets well beaten to remove all clinging dust before you get out your tuba. Put a pint of house-hold amouia in bottom of the tub. Tben Jay the blanket lightly on over the amonia, and pour upon it a sufficient quanity of warm water to cover the blankets entirely. Then, with a stick, or the band, flop tbe blankets about in the solution, pressing all tbe water that will comeout of it against the side of the tub, without wringing as you remove it to rinse the water. Rinse in the same way in the same moderately warm water, I not boiliug water and by simply pushing the blankets about in the tub. Press through the wriuger and hang out to dry in a windy place, not in the. It you do not care to put in a second blanket in the first ammouiated water which must be done promptly, as the ammonia evaporates quickly, divide the quantity, taking half a pint for of the two tubs, and wash two blaukets at once. The evaporating ammonia, released by the warmth of the water, can only escape through the blanket which is laid over it in the tub Deiore the water is applied. Hence you get the value of every drop of it. This will make them as clean and as soft as dew aod without much fatigue. There were lour accessions lo the church. On account of the interest manifestHoolHoH ?n nnnflnno tha m no tine? through thin week. The audiences are good and the meeting a helpful one. We very much enjoyed the privilege ol meeting last Sabbath evening with the Sab. bath school of Abbeville. We found BroSloan and bis people much Interested la the work of the school. They have Just reorganized the school, and elected new tench ers. All of the members of the church are members of the school. Just at present Bro. Sloan Is the superintendent. The Indications point to the school starting the new year and the new century In good shape. Thl6 8Chool and church have had many discouragements aud have received many blows. But we believe the future holds in store better things for the little flock. The church is growing on the community and in the esteem of the public. The pastor is a favorite with all denominations and dwells In the heartB of hie own people. 1 The Ceutnry lu h Nntibell. Winter is upon us, and the farniei should rejoice, not because it will be a season of rest, but because it will give him an opportunity to do so mau^ things tbat he bas neglected in the hurry of planting, cultivating and harvesting. We fear that we should not make a success, of farming if we were in a region of perpetual summer. We should hinder our work by trying to do too much, and leaving undone the work that should be done. There are many little things for which there seems to be no great haste. They can be done at any time, and that means that they are never done, or done in great haste when they reach the point where they must be done. 'When we were farming we used the days wheo it waa not suitable weather to work out of doors iu puttinir all toolsand machinery iu good condition, in eluding farm wagons and carts, and they were painted, if they needed it. which most of them did even aftei oue*year's use. The work might not have been done very artistically, bul the paint served to protect the wood from the weather. Then harness wer< cleaned, meuded and oiled, and repairt made on gates, fences. etc., while dur ing the pleasant days manure wa< drawn out, auu me summer wooc brought home. All this so helpei when the spring work began that i we desired to ?o on a farm again w< should much prefer to take in it November than March, observes th< American Cultivator, unlets we an sure that our predecessor had beei one who spent winter days in gettinf ready for the coming season. . Fang, Chinese ministerpienlpoteutlary toth< , UDited States, replied to his critics in thi course of a lecture on "Confucius and Mencl us," delivered before the Society of Ethlca ! Culture, at Horticultural Hall. Every avail able inch or both seating and standing roon: r" was occupied by an audlenca attracted by th< protest and criticism raised by Minister Wu'i utterances in New York city on the subject o Christianity, which listened with much Inter est to the speaker. The Chinese mlnlster'i I statements, nowever, were extremely cuu servatlve. > S Bums Watson, director of the society, in troriuced Minister Wu, who said : i ' Twenty-foilr centurieH have rolled bv sine* * Confucius walked this earth. His influenci i la hs great to day among bis countrymen ai i' . ever was before. Never was his name held it ; greater veneration than it is now. Through I out the length and breadth of the Chinese En i plre, everywhere, are temples erected in hli ? memory. Every schoolboy acknowledge! i blm as the supreme teacher of the Chines* race. His spirit pervades a nation of foui . hundred millions, and bis word is recognizee as law to the most uugust Emperor on th< throne as well as to the meanest peasant ai the plough. Thus is Conlucius enthroned it the hearts of bis countrymen." In closing the speaker said : "I And that tbe address on Confucianism 1 delivered last Monday at Carnegie Hall, Ir iicw iuin. uan nuiuuicu <* jjicut uoui ui ni tentlon. It also has met with some adverse criticism." Minister Wu quoted a commentof the Rev Dr. Wayland Hoyt. of this city, In which tb< latter spoke of Ll Hung Chang's bleb tribute to the worK ol Christian missionaries In Cbl na, and asked what reply the Chinese minis ter could make. "Dr. Hoy i has done me, though doubtless unwliingly, a gross injustice," continued Mr ; Wu. "Since he wants a reply, I havenobes . itatlon in giving him one. I endorse everj word that Earl Ll has said on tbe subject o foreign missionaries as cited by tbe doctor To prove that lam sincere in what I say, ] beg to refer tbe doctor to the address I delivered in December last before the Amerscan Ao i ademy of Political and Social Science ir Phil i adelpbla on tbe 'Causes or tbe UnpoDularltj I of Foreigners in China.' I suppose the doctoi , bad not read that address, or, if be bad read it, be bad forgotten it. In any case, I would not believe that an eminent divine could b< capable of purposely misconstruing It. "1 am inclined to think that the reason whj ' some clergymen?and I am glad to say thai ! there are not many?took oHence at what 1 said Id mv address oil Confucianism Is that 1 1 took Ibe liberty of Instituting a oomparlsoc 1 between Confucianism and Christianity which they supposed was done lo the dlspar ageraentof the latter. There was certainly nc 1 Intention on my part to make an attack upon Christianity. Surely It Is no discredit to Raj that Christianity is too high and elevated loi frail humanity, and that all CbrlBtiane are not acting up to its tenets, Just aR It is nc disgrace to acknowledge that the Confucian' lsts In China donot live up to the teaching oi Confucius. It seems strange that some clergymen Bbould resent any attempt to compare Chris tlanity with other systems of belief, while they themselves do not soruple to attack othei religions. In other words they do Just what ; they do not want others to do. Since my ad; dress on Confucius was delivered I have seen i Confucianism condemned right and left. II bas been called a failure. It has been dubbed 'ttlete,' 'vague,"unworthy of attention,''rotten to the core,' tottering to Its fall' and the like. "I do not, however, quarrel with those who appiy eucQ opproorious epitnets to our creeu. Is Cod fuel an ism was as bad as Its detractors try to make It out tobe.it lsstrauxe tbat after twenty-four centuries It should be able tc count millions and millions of people as Its adherents. The noble and sublime teaching of Christianity need not fear criticism, much less friendly comparison. "I believe thatall religions teach men to be good. If every man would realy try to act up to the doctrines enjoined by bis religion the world would be far better. It would be well if priests and clergymen of every laltb and creed would do their best to promote this deBlrable end.
