Dr. Hix, and others whose namesltve do not now recall. Durltig the discussion which followed the readlntfof the essay, one member asked lor the dlsnnbtlou betweeu oratory' and eloquence. 7'fhiH seemed to strike the ciub all iu a heap,/ and for a moment; the members could urn catch their breath. i ' j It wai held that a man might make an Idpasslonml and effective speech under certalu' circumstances, which he could not make un-> derotbenoondittons. It was often trae that theenthfURtasm of the audlenoe. Inspired the eloquence of the spieaker,.and. sometimes the enthuamsm of the audience 'was more'eloquent jthau the words of tbforator. Another member oontendld that eloquence consigned more in tli'e words when wntten and read, wonld thrill the reader^more than the maimer of the speaker. A member cited an eloquent address by Rev. Dr). Thompson. Wben speaking to the returned soldiers he likened the Slate' of South Carolina A a widowed mother, Welcoming her surwlng children home after the bloody confl A A member thoupbl?but be didn't say It? that speeches on that line were all more or less inspired by Webster's speech at Bunker Hill, ^'bat speech seems to have permeated and inspired either directly or Indirectly all sentimental speakers ou that line. Washington . as an orator of note. 1 A member cited as one of the best pieces of eloquence that he bad ever heard, was the sermon of Dr. Jerldo on "The Judgment." It so Impressed him that he couldn't sleep that night. , On tne subject of that sermon, another member thought?but he did not say It?that " Dr. Jerldo's sermon ou the Judgment was poor enough. The preacher bad but slim Bible authority for the exercise of his Imagination. The propriety ot making a spectacu- i larshow of the Judgment Is doubtful. One member said Ben Hill, of Georgia, was a greater orator than Benton who attached the South In the Senate. Hon. M. Jj. Bonham, of Anderson, was cited as an eloquent orator. - The name of Henry Grady was mentioned J as one of the greatest orators of the South. i And the name of John Temple Graves was not forgotten. The discussion during the evening was as notable tor what was not said, as for what was said. The meeting was an exceedingly pleasant one. ' ChrlMtuiHN.
