I Seasonable KticeetttionN. Autumnal colds are generally located in the intestines, rather than in the throat and lungs as in winter. The usual causes are the sudden checking t.of perspiration as the weather grows ' cool, tlie exposure to draughts, and .'eating too much or too rich loud. The | first cause is to be avoided hy proper j clothing, the second by sitting where | * a cool wind will not strike the back of the ueck, a very punitive place. Ani i eniment physician state tha e< if a person guards the back ol'^neek, the feet .^and the chest, lie will r:.rely catch cold. Another cause is breathing foul air in a close room, after the open life of summer. It is the sudden closing of the pores of the skin that throws escaping waste material back iuto the blood, thus forcing it to find exit some-where, that produces a cold. As for eating too much or injudiciously, that produces an excess that liuds outlets in i-fevers, intestinal troubles or colds, j Common sens dictates the following 1 of that manner of life that shall aid nature to cleasuse herself. To abstain from heavy food and eat little of any other kiud, will give the wise old dame time to do her house cleaning. Secondly, we should keep warm and (juict, so as to impose upon her no extra tax. Thirdly, if need be the excretions should be promoted by a little harmless . laxative. It goes without saying that warm drinks and eruels help to carry Hn away jmburities. And Jast, but not HR least, we should cultivate an even state , of mind, a positive attitude, which will go far toward keeping us in good eondiBB tion. Anger, anxiety worry, depress H vital force and disturb the circulation 8^8 Diphtheria. RS A few years ago when diphtheria was ^V'ra&iQg iu England, a gentleman acH con\panied the celebrated Dr. Field on H his iiouuds to witness the so-called Pa wonderful cures which he performed, M while t\ie patients of others were dropSi ping 01N all sides. All he took with ' him ware powder of sulphur and a quill, an(A with these he cured every B patient wiVhout exception?that is, he put a teasp'Joonful of flour of brimstone W into a wiutiglass of water, and stirred it with his winger instead of a spoon, n as sulphur\ does not readily amalgaS& mate with vYater, and on the sulphur 9R becoming wtlll mixed be gave it as a B gargle, and ii? ten minutes the patient was out of dagger, as brimstone ,kill8 every species c)f fungus in man, beast S| and plant in a Vew minutes. Instead of spitting out fthe gargle, he recomH mended the swaftlowing of it, and, in I" extreme cases in swhich he had been r called just in the iiick of time, when the fungus was two nearly closing to allow the gargling?, he blew the sul|i phur through a quill into the throat, 9 and after the fungiis had shrunk to alI low of it, then the gargling. He never B lost a patient from .diphtheria. Or, if I the patient cannot g&rgle, take a live | coal,\put it on a shovel, and sprinkle a I spoonful or two of th$ brimstone at a 1 time upon it. let the sufferer inhale it, | holding the.head over and the funI gus will die.1 \ I Lemon Taffy. V > 1 Put one pound of the best fc?inulated x sugar in a saucepan with ha^pintof | water, stir well before it boils^o the 1 sugar will not settle to the bottonV after ? it is all dissolved do not stir Win. K When fine bubbles appear, drop a 8 from the end of a fork into cold water, I and try it by tasting; if it snaps between # the teeth, quite brittle, it is ready for I candy. Add a large teaspoouful of I lemon juice and a few drops of extracts nflnmnn T.ol Ik hnil tntrpfhpr until I it begins to take a yellow shade. Have a tin ban nicely oiled with Bweetoii. Into this pour the candy and as it beginsv to cool mark it iQto blocks with a warm knife that has been oiled. * Oar Mothers. A mother complained not long ago 'that there is, in this day and generation, little reference for parents. This Is probably true. But why ? asked a writer in the Pittsburg Dispatch. Aie the parents of to-day compelling reverence by living their lives so firm, and fine, and fair, and strong, that the children needs must, reverence them? Reverence cannot be forced out of a child on demand, or by saying it ought Jo be ; any mother can command it by being the kind of person a child can [reverence. Better far, however than the old idea of awe which our forefathers inspired in their children?if that is what this mother meant?are the close, beautiful friendships we are learning to-day to establish with our children ; the comradeship which jogs along With them in work and play, in all their experiences, great and smallfriendships with the love and sympathy-that never fail, no matter how trying these experiences may be. .
