. ^ 5'. t* r The Press and Banner r - - - Wednesday, Oct. 10,1900. 'Prominent Prl^onera." We see it stated in tbe uewspapers that petitions are pressed lor the pardon of "prominent prisoners." When the Governor Is considering these petitions, we hope that he may not forget the lrlendless wretches who have neither friends nor money. And we hope that he may not forget that the protection of our person Is the highest function of the government. If the newspaper accounts of crime are to be taken as a guide, nearly all the crimes against the person are committed by "prominent people," or "highly respectable citizens." The Juries, It seems, have sometimes doue their duty and convicted some of these very highly respectable criminals,of whose 1 preseuce soolety Is now so sorely deprived. Up to this time Governor McSweeney has exercised the pardoning power with gVeat discretion, and we hope that he will not now break tils good record by opening the gates for any who may not deserve clemency. 1 ."?? An unusual case, says our local oorrespon- _ lent, occured In the Spartanburg Court Wed- 1 lesday morning. He explains : "Claude Thompson, 6 to S years old, entired a plea of guilty to housebreaking and arceny. Tbe law does cot provide for piacDg any convicts on the county chain gang ixcept able-bodied males. After maklog tbe itatement Judge .Benet expressed ft regret " bat tbere was no reformatory for Juvenile 'rlmlnals In the State. He also said that If H .he mother of the little fellow would give him 1 sound whipping lu tbe presence of the ibetiff that he would order tbe case nol prosied. Tbe punishment was properly admlnl6- v ,ered." Two somewhat like cases, as we noted a ew days ago, occured In tbe Anderson Court ast week, when two colored boys, aged 9 and 2 years respectively, were sentenced to the -y so-called reformatory," an annex of the 8tate Penitentiary at Columbia, for 6 and 12 months D espectlvely for "bulgary'Sand "forgery." ? Judge Benet evidently regards that In- t itltutlon, desDlle its name, as no place for shlldren, otherwise he would have sent the a 1-yearold culprit to join his 0 and 12-year-old i ellows tbere. It may be assumed also, In t flew of his action In the premises, that be j vould not have sent the two Anderson child- \ en tbere, and tbat, in a general way, be p joes noi rf((#1 u IUC urutrnj piunucu u? 1UC j aw for "able-bodied" adult and deliberate) 8 :rlralnals as suitable to be Inflicted on tender and thoughtless Infants. The punishment he required to be administered to tbe culld Drought before biro, was outside the statute law, do doubt. But It was within tbe law of common sense and common humanity, and it was wholly adequate for its purpose?the i due punishment of the small offender. It is d greatly to be hoped that all the other Judges in the State will exercise tbe same discretion in all such oases, and that the Legislature will authorize them so to do, at its approach- . Ing session. Tbe law as it stands disgraces, not only the civilization of the State, but its Intelligence as well. We know that we ex- ' press tne public sentiment when we say that ' Judge Benet did bis plain duty as a Judge and as a citizen when he disregarded it, and that it should be wyped from the statute book at tbe earliest possible day.- j Senator NeLiiureii. The Greenville News thinks tbe Press and Banner will be quite lonely in its support of ' the reeleotlon of Senator McL&uren, two { years heuce. We may be lonely, but we will be right, and tbe consciousness of being right is worth muoh. But we are notentlrely alone now. We have some mighty good company In tbe Columbia Record and tbe Yorfcville Enquirer. Tbe Record Is a staunch supporter of MoLaureo, and tbe Enquirer, alter quoting j our remarks, says : t "This has tbe ring of good, sound sense. Senator MoLauren Is one of the few repre- . nentatlven tbat this State has bad In Washington since tbe war, wbo considers right and the welfare of bis people above parly expediency. All along be has worked consistently and fearlessly for South Carolina, and about all the opposition tbere ever developed against hlrn comes from small, disaffected, selfish snappers wbo are unable to appreciate trne breadth and patriotism In a real statesman. There are thousands of people who would like to have the senator's place for the money and honor tbat are In It, and there are many wbo really believe tbat they could render a great service to the State; but In our opinion tbere Is not muoh probability of a change. The voters of South Carolina hfiwo Isornori Into In the ermslrlnrnMnn r?f senator McLauren's character and ability, aud there will be time during the next two years to learn a great deal more." ? Note*. The seed house of Mr. hong's ginnery was discovered to be on fire about sunrise yesterday morning. The fire laddies were called out and they soon extinguished tbe blaze. The cotton seed had been stolen aud carried away. An enterprising brgular entered the store of Mess. Cobb ?te McDaniel Monday night. After selecting such goods as he needed, be withdrew from the premises after locking the door. It is supposed that some SiO worth was taken. Mr. Cobb says that If the gentleman will call at the store he will turn over the i lock to his nocturnal visitor. He doesn't care i iruon tho ah ionp as nrvknnwn npranriH have the key. Mr. Frank McGebee, now of Spartanburg, was in town a day or two auo. He came because of an interesting event in bis family. "Trespass" Delined.
