THE BIBLE SOCIETY. Met Wwlnendny. July 35, 1900, in tlie A. K. P. t'tiiircli, Abbeville. The Abbeville District I'.lble Society held Its annual meeting In tho A. u. p. church last Wednesday. There was no sermon and no address. Rev. F. V. l'ressly, 1). 1>., was elected President. . J. P. Lyon and Hon. \V. H. Parker, Vice Presidents. Samuel Evans and Rev. T. W. Sloan life members. E. W. Watson, a director. Rev. L>. G. Phillips was chosen to preach the sermon next year with Rev. R. A. Child as alternate. J. Fraser Lyon, Esq., was chosen to deliver the next annual address with W. P. Green, Esq., alternate. The Society sent SI2i to the American Bible Society. The attendance was not as large as the friends of the Society could have wished, and genera! enquiry has been made for the cause of the apparent loss of Interest in its meeting?. The Abbeville District Bible Society had Its origin nearly a century ago, and we believe tliat Its meetings have been held an. nually since Its organization. Without the application of special business principles, the Christian spirit that has pervaded this county has kept the association alive. In former years Abbeville looked to the meeting of the Bible Society with more pleasure than to any otber day of the year. Those of our citizens who contemplated trips for the summer postponed their going until after the fourth Wednesday ot July. And everybody in town prepared a big dinner for delegates who were expected to come. The day to Abbeville was very much as the Commencement is to Due West. But several years ago the meetings fell ofl largely, and the good attendance has not been regained. Friends of the Society would like to awaken former interest in tne prouu' est and befit institution of the town, and all people would like to see the good old day* f come again. All sorts of schemes have been proposed by which the desirable result may be brought about, and all sorts of reasons have beer urged fhat caused the regretted result. To the formation of Auxiliary Societies has been oharged the lessening of the mem' bershlp of the District Society. Membership in tlie>.Auxillary Societies costs 25 cents while membership of the District Socletj costs S1.00. When members of the Auxiliary Societies withdrew their membership Iron: the District Society, they had not the same I incentive to oome, and therefore remained away. Their remaining away lessened th< Interest of the town people, and so they dc not turn out as numerously as they did U former yearn. Another reason lor the absence or the town people rested on the fact theat the exercises were tiresome because of their extremt length. The religious exercises generally consisted of singing, prayers, sermon am! essay. Then sometimes followed the long i tabulated statements of the Ueneral Agent After which the business of the Society wai concluded at, say half-past one o'clock, 01 possibly two o'clock. Jul} 9, 1900, and the remains were tenderly laid li their narrow little resting place at Kehobotli cemetery Monday afternoon at five o'clock. She was sick only eleven hours, when God aid. Very soon after taking sick Dr. Ward wai sent for, and be also summoned to his assist anoe Dr. Eptlng, of Greenwood. These kind gentlemen did all that could be done, but she was beyond buinan skill, and death brought relief to the little sufferer. Rev. J. P. Knox of Columbia, S. C., did most of the preaching and bis sermons were greatly enjoyed. Ttie services morning and night were well attended throughout the week. Seven persons united with tbe church. Tuesday of this week the A. R. P. Sabbath School will go on a picnic excursion to Wllllamston. It will be a great day lor tbe young people and a day long to be remembered. The Bank of Duo West was organized last week. The stockholders met and elected the following board of directors : B. F. Mauldlu, C. K. Todd. A. 8. Kennedy, F. Y. Pressly, P. L. CJrler, G. S. Mower. It S. Galloway, M. B. Cllnkscales and R, C. Brownlee. The directors afterwards met and elected the following officers: B. F. Mauldin, President. A. S. Kennedy, Vice President, Itev. C. E. Todd, Cashier, and David L. Pressly, Teller. Mr. A. S. Kennedy was absent from home and it is not known whether he will accept the position to which he has been elected. Capital stock of tbe bank Is twenty thousand dollars. Mr. J. D. Brownlee went to Atlanta Monday morning. His daughter. Miss Gertrude Brownlee, accompanied him. They will spend a week in tbe city. Miss Lena Trlbble Is visiting friends in the Antrevllle section, and will no doubt enjoy the stay with her old schoolmates. A. G. Brlce, Esq., a prominent member of the bar and president of Ihe Commercial Bank, of Chester, and J. Steele Brice, Esq , a successful young attorney of Yorkvllle, and a candidate for the State Senate from York county, are In Due West to see their mother, Mrs. A. G. Brlce, who has not been very well for the past month. Mr. Olln Brownlee, of Anderson, Is spending a few day's vacation with his father, slst" r and brother. He is uncertain as to where be will spend the time. i The death of Mrs. D. F. Haddon, which oc. curred in this place Wednesday. July 25th, I cast a gloom over this entire community. Mrs. Haddon had lived In this community for ' nearly two years and had endeared herself to > a large circle of acquaintances. She had not been well for several days, but no uneasiness was felt as 10 her condition until the day before she died. On Thursday, August 9, the Associate Re, formed congregation at Due West, will have Its annual picnic on the church grounds. ' Various committees have been appointed ana everything possible will be done to make the i plcnlo a success and have tboee who are present enjoy the occasion to tbelr hearts con: tent. The registration of voters muat be by polling precincts. There must be a Book of Registration for each polling precinct, that is for eacn township, or parish, or city, or town of less than five thousand inhabitants, or ward of cities of more than five thousand inhabitants. Each elector must vote in the polling precinct in which he resides. If there is more than one voting place in the polling precinct, the elector may vote at any voting place designated on the registration certificate. The Boards must designate in the registration certificate the voting place in the polling precinct at which the elector i9 to vote.
