KING'S EXCUSE<'npt. J. X. Kinu'H Story of n Thril IIuk Advcnluri1. "You see It happened this way," began Mr. King; lighting n fresh cigar. "Last May as I wan driving along through the cou' try to Westminster in my buggy I met a good looking yoong womau who appeared to be completely fagged out alter a long walk. She was accompanied by a little boy. She asked mt the way to Wentroinster. I not only told her, but Invited her and the boy up to seats by me in the buggy. I questioned her as to who she was and why she was out so late, butsbe gave meouly monosyllabic answer* and they were unsatisfactory. I saw tha' something was up and I made up my mind to let her out of the buggy before I got into town. "Presently I beard a horseman hit the sieel bridge behind us. He cleared It In about three jumps. I turned and saw that the rider was coatless and be carried a double barrelled shot gun on bis shoulder and was wearing a plow line like a marshal's sash. It was beginning to get dark then and I paid no attention to the horseman, aud he did not seem to recognize us. But Just as he passed tbe buegv the little baa said : "Mamma, mere* papa.' 'Then it was that 1 saw what was up and I trembled. "Tbe horseman wheeled about on meat tbe sound of tbe boy's voice and leveling his shot guu at me and said! "Oh yes, you you. Its you that's running away with my wife is It; I'll Just shoot your G?-?d?heart out right here.' i/- "I was trembling visibly then. A second more and I would have been killed; and oh my what a sensation as would have been published In the papers anout my being killed while running away wi;b another man's wile. The true condition would never have been known. "But in tbe crisis that little frail woman saved my life. Just as the husband spoke she jumped from the buggy and said to him: "Here if you are going to kill anybody kill me. That gentleman there knows nothing about me;,be simply picked me up awhile ago in the road and offered me a ride because " "?* T ?? ? one! worn out.' lie saw IUUL X won "I got out of the fcuggy," continued Mr. King, now puffing vigorously at hia cigar, "ana edged around" uutll 1 got my horse bex v tweeo me and the man with the gun. ivvV- "Then the husband began to ewear at the time- woman wbo bad refused to go home with fVv him. He told ber that If sbe would not go " < with him peaceably be would carry her forci bly, dragging ber by ber neck to the end of his plow line, at bis horses heels. "I said be would do nothing of the kind, 1 bnt I guess I did not say it with much spirit for I was still looking tit tbat shot gun. v "When I spoke the fellow turned on me and asked me what In the hell I bad to do with it, and said be would kill us both. *1 told b.'m I did not have anything to do ; wltb it, but j"8t didn't approve of bis way ol w. escorting a (Mdy bome. "Just then I beard horsemen coming up the road li^m the opposite direction Looking up I saw two rider? with sbot guns. "I said to myeelf. Oh Lord, now I'm In it S o sure enAugb. , "When I turned my attention to the first rider again be was off like a shot, and just as be tamed tbe bend of tbe road, wltb th> other two men after him they fired at him Presently the two horsemen who tamed out to be tbe father and brother of the woman L returned, and everything was explained. The Kfit woman'* ousbund bad been beating ber and SIlB bad written for her father nod brother to come for berand take her buck home, iiui tbere was a delay in the delivery of ber letter and sbe fearing tbat tbe letter bad been misplaced, started out to walk tbe way. Tbe relatives bad reclved tbe letter a day late t^nd M were oa tbelr way for ber at tbe time they ran upon na. Tbe woman aooompanled tbe lather bome and I went on to Westminster, still feeling a little unoomfortable." W CapL King Is well Known as a jony Bwu fellow?a 800 pounder?who would make a splendid target for the sbot gnn of an engaged wife beater. But fortune was on bis side, and tbe Captain Is now bappy over tbe result of of bis late experience.?Greenville News. ; J *?m DISPENSARY or PROHIBITION 4 V ' ? Trojan Horse to Bring Back tbe Sonl and Body Destroying Bars. Greenville Dally Times. Tbe local option plan, In onr mind. Is simply a scheme to tb wart tbedlspensary system, and give baek to old barroom keepers tbe privilege of opening up under high license, or ptberwise, tbe soul and body destroying ialoons. If a local option law Is passed by %4t?e legislature, the power of controlling tbe - liquor trafflo will rest almost entirely witb tbe neopleof tbe towns and cities, and tbe bar* room element will manage In some way to reestablish themselves In business among tbe yoDth, some of whom will fall Into tbe snares and pitfalls set lor them by thU element "There will be means by wblob tbe number of . barrooms thus opened can be controlled, and t'"?s in a city as large an Greenville?or Greenville city, for example?an election would be ordered todetcmlne whether ?r not itB citizens should have h right, given them by tbe voters, to deal lu wbiskey. Half of the ant-dispensary element would vote In favor of Ktvlnir tbis privilege to the citizens under "certalu restrictions;" and doubtless, half of the dls pensary aavocaies wuuiu vuw iuc oaiuc **?/? if tbe dispensary was removed. Enougb favorable votes would be cast to give tblR privilege to tbe citizens ot Greenville, and a dozen or more barrooms wonld be opeDed The privilege ot "restrlcHons" would be violated by side entrances to tbe saloons, nn<l It would only be a question of a little time until tbe Bame scenes tbat were enacted under tbe old barroom laws would appear upon tbe stage of tbe social world, In a more bein ous form than ever. It wonld be a gn.'at blunder on tbe part of a good, honest office bolder like Governor Mc Sweeney to favor tbe local option plan, and we hope tbat be will allow no newapaper to dlcateor "assume" the character or bis first message, if tbat newspaper tries to weave Into It a local option clause. Tbe only hope of a i change In tbe present law is straight prohlbi* v ^ tloo. The citizens of South Carolina are '^Tfewaketo tbls lad and The State newspaper would do well to govern itself accordingly. BUILDING MONUMENTS. Monument* Which Spenk the Glory of Their Builder, Captain King. Since a period dating far back in the world's history pyramids and monuments have been built In commemoration of the services and character of those who were, Id their life ,r time, promoters of the Interests and the welfare of thelrifellowmen. In this day of progress a new order of thlDgs has come about, and our thoughts and our alms have developed new lines of actlou. For several years the officers of different counties In this State have been erectlag at public expense utilitarian arches over our streams that commemorate the skill and tact of the living and whlob are more durable and of more real value than the greatest triumphal arshes that were ever reared by crowned heads or Imperial republics. Dewey's triumphal arch pnrtulued t? the porup and circumstance of glorious war. Captain King's useful arches spaa our creeks and give passageways across deep and rocky chasms. By them the wayfarer Is given a sale passage ov?r threatening waves of angry streams. His great Iron bridges ars built so strong and set on stone piers wblcb are so high above the water, that neither floods nor winds can shake them from their foundations. Marble shafts and granite monuments May crumble and decay. Tablets of brass and bands of Iron May rust and bend away, But ever and anon proclaiming The builder's fame and glory Wll! J. N. King's bridges stand To bless and serve mankind. A Good Preacher. The people of his native county will be glad , to know that the name ol Rev. Oliver John son is becoming widely known as that of a < man whospeafcs with streugtb and simplicity, able to catch and bold the attention of the young and the old alike. Mr. Johnson was born at Bordeaux In this county in 1S66, graduated from Ersklne College In 1&S8 and from the Princeton Tbeologi- * cal Semin ry in 1894. He was licensed to f preach on the 19th of May, 1893, after two years of Theological study, but he preferred J to take the third year course in the seminary * before entering actively upon pastoral work. soon alter leaving .Princeton, Mr. Johnson 1 wan offered the charge of congregations to which be had preached in both Pennsylvania and Massesschusettes, but he preferred to remain with bis own people in the South, and accented the call to the Associate lie- 1 formed Presbyterian Church at Leslie, In York county, which Is one of the oldest and lareest in the denomination, having been organized in 178? in a region of country orlgik Dally settled by Scotch-Irish emigrants and ^ in which Presbyterianism. The ProhibitioniHts have, we believe, sense enough to see that they have all the prohibition under the dispensary law that t.bey could gel under the Appelt license subterfuge. Now they have the choice between the dispensary and legnl prohibition ; under the Appelt bill the range of choice would be enlarged by fifty per cent., which Is a pretty heavy advance toward the old barroom ays| tem. Let some one follow Appelt a year or (wo later with a substitute for his bill, providing for another little advance of 60 per cent, towards barroom liquor, and. there you have it in toto!
