r ATLANTA LETTER. : _ . - . 1 m _ * ?..'J rr^ll s eeinjf ininK* m turj air auu > vn1ns the FactN?Honent Speech and Warm Heart?Good Wishes for All, and Especially for the F res it huiI Banner. Atlanta, Ga.. Dec. 12,1809. Last April I took It upon myself to write a letter to the Press and Banner it wan published add later on, about August, I bad occasion to vinit the home of my childhood and even after so many weeks, many of ray friends recalled tbe letter of April, showing that tbe good people of Abbeville county appreciate a good thing, and hence subscribe to and read their country paper. Well, am I going to afflict them with another letter. Here goes! Atlanta Is lu a great stir now preparing for tbe Cbsistmaa holidays. The schools ^re all going to give the children a vacation, tbe churcnes are all going to have 6ome kind of services, and the poor clerks will get a little time off, too. The mall carters will reoelve presents ana congratula^^lotisNJom their patrons, the children will ^ / bang up their stockings and Santa Claus JL will fill them with good things to eat. The ~ latest news from "Toyclone'r is that Santa ' *' 1 ? nn rnh a aoo ann with VsIHUS una uiauo uv?? j put vmmuvu ?.?M his little sl?igb and reindeers, will give with a generous hand bis many pretty and valuable things to tbe little boys and gtrli all over the South- land, who are good to their papa's and mama's and who always mind tbem. Even tbe draymen are to have a chance to enjoy Christmas; they will take a day off and enjoy the festivities; in fact everybody, everywhere, Is looking out for agood time, except the poor street car men of Atlanta. Summer or winter, botor cold, wet or dry, sunshine or rain,"night or day. be has to be at his post crying In the ears of an ungrateful public from oefore day till midnight, "Fares; please, lares, please." They will get their reward In the world to coma, I suppose, and all will be well. At least they are living In that kind of bope. Tbe store windows here on Whitehall Street are real shows. Tbe display of fancy dry goods Is simply grand, and toys bob up In great profusion on every band. Tbe balloon man has arrived with his blue and red balloous. and holds down the street corners catching many a dime for his rubber bubble. The fakirs are up to snuff, snd on nearly every corner you r?u ecu uib (iauu( ii(um and bear bis enticing speech advertising bis wares, catching suckers on every hand like "Livingstone's fish basket," oatching tbem agwlneand acomlng." Eggs are as valuable as any eatable we <v.M*Mve od tbe market, 40 cents a dozen, and you oan sarely calculate on two good eggs out or each dozen, maKlng them cost only 20 cents each for good ones, with the bad oues thrown In. Eggnog Is a luxury that only tbe weal thy can eDjoy. The nog Is much cheaper than the egg, and many a poor cuss will take bis nog minus the egg, and thus save expenses and enjoy tbe pleasure of a Jag Just tbe same. Atlanta has a population of 125,000 and Is growing every day. She is a hustler, she Is a bummer, and always stands with ber hands outstretched to welcome new comers wltbln ber gates. ol-? h?? -i lortrQ nnmhop nf nnnnlfl hnm from South Carolina, engaged in various pursuit!, and all the Carolina boys tbat we bave met seem to be getting along nloely, doing well. Tbere Is a Carolina clab bere somewhere, bal I bave never been Initiated into It, and benoe can't tell anything about It. The people over here look at yon with wonuer, when you tell them you are. from South Carolina, and some how tbey go to extra trouble to mow you a mark of respect. Tbey always think of sue cession In connection with South Carolina, and some who remember the Chivalry of her Antl-bellum days allow the name Carolina to suggest the "Code duello," and of course then they will go a block out of their way to give yon a pleasant Bmlle or salute. In short, the man that Is knowa as a Carolinian, Is considered and treated as a gentleman of the flrgi water, and It Is a natural Instinct to a Georgian to respect him. Well, the Press and Banner, I know, will enJoy Christmas, and I send my salutation "Merry Christmas" and a happy "New Year" on these pages .to be In time. May yon continue to prosper as in the years gone by, and live to enjoy many returns of Christmas days. I am going to hang up my sock and see If I *' will be remembered by Santa ClanB, and all friends who desire to, add to ruy joys wild ' pleasant sayings and presents aod such like can have their saylDgs reach me by letter, addressed 82 North Forsyth Street, Atlanta, and express wagons will take a special delight In delivering all packages to tbe same address. Be sore and remember tbe number and tbe / afreet. i| ' > Would like for tbe Press and Banner to vls . 11 me every week at the same stand. I assure yon I will always welcome you and look on I your bright pages with a loving, approving ' smile. When Christmas Is over and tbe figures 1S99 will be numbered on tbe back pages orthesoroll of Time, and 1900 will show Its ountenanee on tbe Calendars, let us not forget that 1899 with 365daysbrougbt ltssunsblne -and Its rain, and let us not forget her, but ^ ever hold ber In memory clear, and let us start 1900 with high resolves, firm resolution, and look for better days, belter times, and better conditions, and try and all live up to the requirements of tbe golden rule. "Do unto others as you would bave them do unto you." "Love your neighbor as yourself." \ "Wun Lung." WEST END. Happenings and Incidents of a Week About the City. Mr. D. A. P.
