The Press and Banner ABBEVILLE, 8.C. er*PublUhed every Wednesday at 82 a year In advance. Wednesday, Sept. 27,1899. The Cotton Crop?Price* Going Up. This newspaper Is being impressed with the fact that the cotton crop will be very short. The indications now are that the price will go much higher. We may have eight cents cotton before Christmas. But, of course, it is possible for the price to go lower than It is at present. The future of cotton Is something that no living mortal has yet been able to foresee, and the wisest man In America may In his predictions miss the mark as lar as the least experienced onserver. We wish it distinctly understood that we give do advice to anybody in reference to the selling of his cotton. We are now, however, satisfied that the crop will be a smay'one. As to whether this fact Khali affect the price : the reader is as able to judge as we are. In all lines of mining and manufacturing the prices have gone very tilgh.aud the mines and the machinery are t?xed to their fullest limit. This being true it would seem thai agricultural products may rise in price, and thus equalize everything. * Splendid Cotton Nnrkel-Lnrt;c Stock vi uuuun. The stores at Abbeville are being filled with the latest aDd prettiest goods of every description, and their invltiug exhibits furnish every opportunity to make the desired purchases. Id addition to the attractive goods, Abbeville offers otb'-r Inducements for business and trade. The presence of the cotton mill Insures a most liberal price for cotton, and the high price for the staple has already Induced cotton from beyond former dividing lines. If the farmers realize tbe advantages of this market, cotton will come from a much larger circle than ever before, and tblB additional trade from new territory will likely run tbe reoelpts tbla year np to tbe blgb water mark ol last year. ft The Price or Cotton. The Greenville News very naturally made a mistake In quoting tbe price of middling cotton in Abbeville. Cotton In Abbeville as * in Greenville had sold higher than tbe price noted for the quality named. There Is a grade of cotton which Bells higher than middling. Cotton, as we understand, is sold on a basis of middling, while the different grades are hlgber or lower, as tbe circumstances may warrant. Sonlnic Fall Crops. Quite a lot of oats bas been sown during the month of September. The demand for seed has been greater than usual. The Indications point to a larger crop of wheat than bas been planted for many a year. Some wire fencing has gone out of town, and more attention will be paid to cattle raising. Fall gardening will receive attention. Successor of Dr. Grler. The United Confederate Vetrans or Abbeville County will meet October 14, at Abbeville, or If more convenient, at their general headquarters, and vote lor a commander of one of the Camps, to All the vacancy of Colonel occasioned by the death of Dr. Grler. Know How to Handle Crowds. The handling of big crowds bas been reduced to a science by the Great Wallace Shows. It provides more than one ticket wagon, bas several entrances and plenty of employes iu agnini iui ijauuun iu occiiik no woodersaod getting Reals that are satlsfactory. The arrangement of its rings and stages 1r such tbat do seat is bad. Nor does this circus reserve nearly all the space; only about , one-flftb of the seats are extra. Although thousands see the show dally, they are bandied so perfectly as to avoid all jostling. t Mark From Scotland. Judge Benetcame to town last Monday on business, and during leisure hours greeted f some of bis old friends as In aloretimes. Abbeville claims Judge Benet as her own. and we hope there is no place where be feels more at home. He has Just returned from a visit to bis motber in Scotland, and he rejoices In the fact tbat at ninety-one, she possesses her faculties and has good health. She has prospeots for living to be a hundred. The Judge is In good health and spirits, the best things this side the River. New DrngKlnt. Mr. W. F. Prince, of Charleston, is now al the drag store of Harrison & Game, where he asnumentbe duties ol prescription clerk. He comes highly recommended, and will no doabt be successful in business and natisfaotory to his employers. Tne Press and Banner welcomes Mr. Prince among us, and we have no doubt that our people will be glad to have him fill their prescriptions when In need of medicine. Bttek at Home. Mr. W. L. Klrby?(Foster Kirby)?was at borne for two or three days last wsek, on a visit to bis parents. He has a fine position In the government printing office, wbece he makes over 8100 a month. The Prens and Banner is glad to note bis success. He left Sunday for Washington by way of Atlanta. Upper Long Cane. The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be administered at Upper Long Cane church on the second Sabbath of October. Preparatory services on Saturday before. Chnrch Entertainment. The ladles of the Chancel Guild will give an entertainment for the bens ilt of the Episcopal Church the second week in October al the Glenn-Ethel Inn. Meeting: of tbe Daughters. The Daughters of tbe Confederacy will meet Dext ^Tuesday evening at the homo of Mrs. Harrison, at five o'clock. OUR MILLINERY. Draws From the Seashore and From tbe Mountain Tops. As an evidence of attractiveness of onr mil llnery store?. It Is ODly necessary to state tbat Mrs. J. A. WIIsod and Miss Plevna Seal came home from Norfolk, Va., Just In time for tbe splendid displays tbat are to be seen at oi^r stores. Miss Lytbgoe was away In tbe mountains and sbe, like Mrs. Wilson and Miss Seal, determined to see everything beautiful lti ribbons and headgear. Bo sbe burrled home for tbe great event of tbe season. When our millinery attracts people from tbe seashore, and wben others quit tne mountains In time to witness tbe beautiful exhibitions. we feel sure that'Abbeville will yet be tbe Paris of South Carolina. When ladles ol such exquisite taste as those whom we have mentlned come from long dlBtanceB to see, to admire, and to buy tbetr millinery tbe renown and glory of our stores bas gone abroad, and tbIs town will henceforth be tbe scenes of loveliness and beauty, where beautiful faces and beautiful hats do most abound. Pretty girls buy millinery at Aboevllle, and handsome men court pretty girls anywhere. Girls who do not care to be annoyed by lovers ftbould buy their hats elsewhere than at Abbeville. \yANTFD ?
