The Abbeville Cotton Mill has bought 800 bales of new cotton, being tbe bulk of tbe staple so far delivered this season. The average price has been over six cents, or about So ? e* ? holo thon rnltrtn brought last year. The general belief is that we will have ; a small crop and a still higher price, but the Press and Banner will wait for further developments before glvlngan opinion. Mr. G. A. Vlsanska, one of the oldest as well as well as one of ibe best buyers In Abbeville, sayfi that Instead of receiving in this market 13.000 bales jjr. as we did last year, that not over 10,000 balea will be received tbls year, unless the hlgtl prices which is'being' paid for the staple should draw cotton from less iuviting cotton markets. ft C. X. Graydon who Intended to take the 1:40 ( train for Atlanta. At that time he saw no ? signs of fire. Twenty minutes later he heard _ t woman's voice crying "Fire." Seeing the | reflection of the fire Mr. Fisher at once gave ^ the alarm by ringing the tire-bell. The tire was in the rear part of the second "tory of the house in which Mr. Wilder lived. I'he fire extended rapidly, and the whole neighborhood was brilliantly lighted. -? The fire companies assembled promptly. ^ luid soon members were actively at work fighting the tire. !,? The West Knd Company from the Railroad ^hops and the Hose Company from the Cot- ~ tou -Mill also responded promptly and assisted / the Abbeville Fire Company and the Hook j und ladder Company, all under command of I the Fire Chief C. D. Brown. II Three Irame stores, and the goods that were in them, and the household goods which were upstairs in the living apartments, together with an excellent piano, was the loss, estlmated at about 84,000. Insurance, Si,000. Very al little was saved irom the burning buildings. Owing to the brilliancy of the light, quite a D number ol citizens of all sorts assembled In 1J hasty toilets to witness the scene. Abbeville has few attiactlons, which are better attended than the lires that we have, and a large per cent of those who bear the alarm come to the blazes. i?? unmn ouarters of the town, however, *j the sleepers were found, and their sweet dreaming was not Interrupted. Ttie sleepers were much interested In hearing the news next morning. The loss to Mr. Wilder is a heavy one, and one which he is ill able to bear, but the town will lose nothing. When the stores are rebuilt, they must be of brick. The ordinances of the town now lorbid the erection of wooden buildings so near the Public Square. | Abbeville is well prepared to fight are, but I when a blaze gets well underway In a tinder I box, the efforts of firemen, no matter how I well directed, are powerless to stay the de stroying element. On the east side a brick wall was useful In drawing the line. On the opposite side the wooden dwelling known as the Archer bouse was adjoining. Mr. W. S. Stewart occupied the house, and Mrs. Watkins lived in the next house. 1 They had time to remove their household effects, and, barring the loss from breakage, rc they suffered not greatly, though hurried 01 moves are always attended with Iors, even though everything should be taken out. 11 The Archer house has a history. It was built by John McCombs In the early part of the century. It Is one of three of the original bouses In this city. John McCombs de scended from Irish immigrants and was oue ai of the tirst lawyers to take a place at the Ab- pi bevllleBar. After being admitted to the Bar he inherited a large estate on Long Cane, in- tt eluding the McCombs Mill, now known as Ii Bradleys Mill. Coming into the possession of so large an -* estate he abandoned the law for tne pursuit w of agriculture, and became a rich and successful planter, He married an aunt of Dr. J. W. W. Marshall. The house which he left In Abbeville, and r which was burnt last Wednesday morning, J ' *? ??? , Affloo In w h ir?h was useu iu iot&. no ? |/i iui^ viuw .. ? the Abbeville Whig was printed. John Tuggart was the printer. At that time printing was a curiosity In this part of the country, and Mr. Taggart took great pleasure In showing the work or printing, and In explaining the art of setting the type. The house was built of logs, and afterward weatherboarded. The other houses whloh were built contemporaneously with the Archer house was the house In which Mr. George White now lives. It was built by James Wardlaw. And the house which Is now occupied by Mr. Ellis G. Graydon's family, was built by Moses Taggart about the same time. The house In which Dr. Hill lives is also an old timer. The same Is true of the homestead now occupied by Air. Cothran. All these old bouses were originally of logo, but they have been weatherboarded, and nicety worked over and added to until they do not now resemble their former plainness. The Archer house was Insured for $600, and by its destruction one of the old landmarks of the town has been removed. Tit U Sin is tin U.'
