On March 17th Sheriff Nance left here for Atlanta with the necessary requisition papers for tbe arrest of R. A. Williams, the eml grant agent. Represented the papers to the Governor of Georgia, who said they were all right. He then went to tbe Chief of Police of Atlanta who promised to secure Williams for him, but he gave tbe chief tho dodge and turned up in Memphis, Tenn. Sheriff Nance waB going to preceed with requisition papers to that state when he received a telegram stating that Williams bad been released on a, writ of habeas corpus, and so tbe matter now reste. V E Bljc Fire. I'- The Windsor Hotel In New York was burnS ed last Friday. It was an Immense structure, , I- and filled with many guests. About forty persons lost their lives, and about an equal number were more or less Injured. Many thrilling stories are told of the sad occurrence, and many a fireman proved himself a true I hero in savlpg those who were exposed to the flames. The hotel was in a fashionable part of the city, ana the guests were among the rich and the high-standing citizens. A man with a cigarette threw the6tump of his lighted 1 match down, when the lace curtains of a window blazed, and In forty-five minutes the [ great structure was in ruins, and eighty of Its Inmates were dead or wounded. The burning 5: building, the distress of the inmates, their j fatal flight from high windows to the side I walks below, the bravery of the firemen in D 1 rescuing olhers, made a scene never to be forD 1 gotten. It is noticed that the ladles In Rome of tbe cities are taking formal action, looking to tbe giving of their entire trade to home merchants. When home merchants are dealt with they provide better stocks and are better able to answer tbe demands of their neighbors. Customers very often pay very dearly for orders sent to distant cities. To send business away from the doors of our neighbors 1b very often a disadvantage to buyers, and It is always an act of unklndneBS, whereby tbe business tact of home people, and the welfare of the home town Is discounted, Tbe man who sends off for what he can buy at borne acts In a way which would not support his own town, and the trades people often feel, and sometimes express, contempt for the neighbor who sends off bU money for lees advantageous bargains..' Abbeville has plenty of merchants, and some of tbem can certainly supply any de. mand for dress goods, and whoever sends oft lor mem does a ioousn ining ana invues criticism because of disloyalty to his own home. A Georgia paper, on this subject says : We are pleaded to note that the ladles of a number of southern cities have organized a buyers' league, for the purpose of making organized efforts to Induce at home people to patronize the home market. When the ladles of a city or community undertake a thing, they generally make a success of it. We would like to seethe ladies of Abbeville organize a buyers' league. Concert of action on their part would be not. only patriotic, but would so increase the business of the home merchants thai tbey would be able to carry better assorted stocks of goods, which tbey could sell at even lower prices than they are now doing. In an article on tbls line The Augusta Herald says: There is always a certain number of people in every community who think that nothing they get at home is as good as If they had nought it in the east If they are sincere, how can they ever expect conditions to be better, since It would be folly for a local merchant to lay in a stock of goods of a character which people persist in buying In the east?" Mhocked Citizen* at tbe Violation of the Sabbath?Doctors?Gypsies, and Other Things. LowndeBvllle, March 19,1899. Mr. A. L. Latimer returned from a short trip to Anderson Monday. Messrs E. E. Horton and J. M. Huckabee, 1 went to Anderson on business Wednesday. Mr. L. J. Moorhead has been for two or three weeks telegraph operator at Parfcsvlile. Miss Llllle Shumate of Greenville, came In Friday to spend a while with the family of Mr. E. R. Horton and other friends In this place. Dr. Bodle Mathe^vs of Elberton, did now reach here till Thursday on account of a high river. He is located here for the practice of medicine, and can be found at the Moseley House when not engaged professionally. We extend to blm a most hearty welcome, and it is hoped that his sojourn amongst us may be pleasant and profitable to blm and us. With four fully equipped M. D.'s and two or three more will-be^ in the future, the profession will be well represented, and tbe ailments of our people can be promptly and efficiently attended to. Messrs E. Frlerson and Henry Norwood of Calhoun Falls, were in our town Fridny. Thursday was one of the most beautiful days, tbat we bave bad in a good long while, and It made us all feel good. Miss Ida Hawthorn of Latimer, came up Saturday to visit her friend, Miss Llllie Huckebee. Mr. E. F. Latimer who has been attending tbe Dental College of Atlanta, Ga., for the past taw months, came home Friday to spend his vacation. He will return to his duties at the proper time. Mr. D. L. Barnes Is again traveling in the Interest of tbe Daniel, Pratt, Gin Company, of Annlston, Ala. His territory being not a great ways from here, be can still make this place his headquarters, and visit his home every few days. He is proving to be "the right man in tbe right place." Between 6 and 10 a. m. yesterday, a long and seemingly heavily loaded freight train, passed this place, for Anderson. This is mentioned, as it was a very auusual occurrence to have tbe Sunday echos awaken in such a way. We do not even bave a Sunday mall, but a passenger train runs from Anderson, to Augusta and back. This even might be dispensed wltb, without detriment to the interest of the railroad, as It is said, that the expenses are considerably in excess of the protits on tbat day and it does not appear, that ine iniereH'^j 01 any oue, at, enuer euu 01 uie line could suffer enough to warraDt the breaking of the commandment "Remember tbe Sabbath day, to keep It holy." A band of Gypsies passed through this place on Friday, heading up the country. They numbered about fifteen, with about twenty head of horses and one negro. The wagons were pretty good, but the balance of tbe outfit, men, women, children, borses and negro, were rather a bad looking set. Tbe stook especially showed a lack of tbe assentlals to blgh living, and were said to be worth about one dollar and a quarter per dozen. Saturday night, some of our folks were somewhat scared up by tbe wind. They got up, dressed and awaited events. Tbe often recurring newspaper reports of cyclones, have educated our people up to tbe Idea, that wind Is dfwgerous, and It does not take a very bard one to cause alarm. Mrs. Lantls!
