MENTAL EXERCISES. Competitive Examination of Toanfi Men and Yon us; Ladies. Editor Press and Banner : About a month ago the Senior class of th< Due West Female College met the Senior clasi ofErsklne College in a spelling contestant beat them five to nothing. The boys and girls of Ersklne took their defeat as gracefully as could be expect ed. On December 13th, they were giveD a splen did opportunity to show their superiority. Dr. J. I. McCain, who teaches esct class In English literature, gave them a com petltive examination on the "The Mercban of Venice." Both classes were given th< same questions under the very same condl tlons with the following results: Out of twen ty-four in Ersklne five fell below 70, the gradi necessary to pass, while out of a class of twen ty-elght girls the lowest grade was 76. Tmrx l?i>olrinato ot.i/)an(a w~*nArx QO three of the Due West Female College pupili made 99, one 98. and several 95. The total average of boys was 80 7-24, the to tal average of the girls was 89 3-7. The results of this examination are slgniflc ant to thoughtful minds. At this time It li being urged as a plea for co-education. "Tba female colleges do not give girls the Bame ad vantages that are given the boys." This con test reveals two facts: First, that so far ai the Due West Female College Is concerned 1 Is giving the very same advantages. Second that the girls are either making a much bet ter improvement of their advantages, or tha they are naturally smarter. Three cheers for the girls of the Due Wes Female College! A Man. In bis borne life, bis virtues ever shown fortb in brightest lustre, and it was I there, and among bis closest friends, where bis real worth was best known. Doubtless one the greatest comforts and blessings of the later years of bis life was the consciousness of duty done In the full preparation for the life to come, In the raising of a family of , whom any parent might well feel proud, and ' In seeing each one of them happily married and oomfortablv fixed. Many, very many hearts are saddened by the severing of the earthly ties of love and friendship, binding them to tbe subject of tbls memoir, but the promise of tbe re-unlon "beyond the River" consoles us by the way. This tribute Is offered by a lite long and intimate friend. trftniw ^ ^ SMITHVILLE SCHOOL.
