Miss Brock deserves much credll for

late hour, when we returned to our homes,
hlgbly pleased with our stay at the entertainment.
Messrs. Fennel and Burdett are making
quite encouraging advances toward the finding
of gold in their mine.
Judge R. E. Cox, o' Abbeville, came up
Yednesday. We were sorry that he did not
stay longer with us.
A very unusual sight. On the 17th of this
month many of the cotton fields were as
green as they were at almost any time during
the summer with all of tbe cotton picked
out.
The largest, as to size and qnantlty, potato
crops, for several years, have been gathered
and stored away.
The turnip crop Is unasually fine. Mr. J. H.
Bell, a few days ago, without searching for
tbe largest, palled up one which weighed 9
pounds and 14 ounces.
Mr. W. H. Turner, who by the way, is one
of our most pleasant visitors, as a traveling
' man, and has many friends here, relates a
very strange personal experience. He never

Mr. T. E. Smith, who lived near Harper's
Ferry, died quite suddenly yesterday, and
will be burled today at the Ridge cemetery.

Mrs. Whit Connor Is having erected a very
desirable cottage, which Is to be occupied by
Mr. Corley, of Norway. Mr. Corley comes for
the purpose of educating his children.
Mrs. W. H. Palmer Is visiting friends in
Donalds.
Mrs. George Hodges, of Greenwood, has
been visiting Mrs. J. C. Moore, of Cokesbury.

would succeed Mr. Derham as chief clerk In
the comptroller general's office, arrived In
the ctly yesterday. He took a look around
the office, and when seen by newspaper men,
he whs asked whether he was to receive the
poslllon. He replied that he would, anr' said
he was In Columbia to look over the field.
He was making Inquiries hs to the price of
rents, rtc. It Is not positively decided when
he will beeln bis duties.
Mr. Bradley has made a good auditor, and
will no doubt mnke equally as efficient a
chief clerk when be gets familiar with tb6 details
