Mv first duty is to secure these rolls if possible. The complete rolls and accompa nylng records of the troops from South Caro lina that engaged in tbe war between tbi states was the primary purpose of the legists Hon creating and continuing this oftlce. This is tbe foundation of the historic ediflci that tbe State Historian may becommlsslonet to build. There can be no superstructure o history until this foundation is well laid wltt not a stone missing. There ought to be none Better no history than that there should b< missing tbe rolls of gallant companies fron the military Confederate record of South Car olina. I appeal to tbe press to extend this notlci throughout the 6tate, and I especially urg< tbe county press to help in this business t< tbe best ot its ability. We have bad our Iliad No man with Homeric aspirations can pro oeed to relate the story until the Catos an supplied. Nor is our appeal to tbe press only. It is ad dressed to all the men and all tbe women ii tbe state who have a Confederate Interest And I further call upon all persons to wbon tbe late General Farley, my predecessor, con fided rolls, or sketches to return the same V ki? nfflno tcithmit. delav. Cromer's NngK?Rtlon as to | How They May be Necnrcd. Many of the newspapers are discussing good roads, and the best methods of obtaining them. Mr. S. F. Cromer says that If anybody is Interested In good roads they can get a lund of Information by applying to Mr. Jo Kennedy, who is working the convicts under the direction and supervision ot Cfapt. John Lyon. It is said by persons who have travelled over some of our roads, that Abbeville now has better roads than we ever had b fore. Capt. Lyon says very little, but he is doing a m great deal of the best of work. Capt. Lyon being the right man in the right place, the _ good roads have got to come. Anderson I county wns at one time greatly put out with ' 'P Hon.E. B. Murray because of the road law which he passed for that county. That work V * > 4 citizen of South Carolina, died at his home In Abbeville on the !Hli of August last. He was born and reared in this county, lrona which tieentered the South CtirolliiH College, and af ter admission to ihe B*r, sett led in tbe contiguous county or Abbeville. He rapidly rose to lucrative practice in the Courts of tbe State, wasgilted as an eloquent advocate, and subsequently as an AssocUte Justice of tbe Supreme Court distinguished lor Judicial learning. He was likewise distinguished as a patriotic soldier, rising to tbe rank ofa Brigadier In tbe war bet#eeu the Stales. In the years Immediately succeeding these hostilities he was actively engaged in the practice of the law at th Is Bar. It Is therefore, as a native of our county (Invariably referring with pride to his affection to the county that gave him birth).and his former association with us as practitioner that the Bar of Laurens deem it eminently proper that they give expression to their admiration of his noble qualities and distinguished career.
