"The diving apparatus of the boat,'' id Mr. Dantzbecher in a recent inrview, "is radically different from ything yet constructed, and is cop1 from the fish. This gas-power engine used because it keeps all tire from e hold, the gas in the engines being ade from gasoline and exploded by ectric spark from the storage battery ant. The engines will exhaust, lien on the surface, to the open air, it when running submerged will exiust into a condenser, and the gases exhaust will then be discharged itboard by the vacuum pump. A Philadelohian of great wealth is irnishing the money to build this rearkable craft. The interest he takes i it is solely for its possibilities in le way of advancing scientific knowl edge of the ocean depths. The actual F boat now in course of construction is fitted with electric cooking apparatus, ptc., and in addition to quarters for the crew, which will oonsist of first and second officers, two engineers, Q] cook and assistant, will have berthing ^ *pace for eicjht people in a main ^ saloon. The estimated cost of the vessel is $41,000. It is expected to w] liave a speed of fifteen knots per hour. w( ? th Moving the Pyramids. The stack recently &g moved at Manhanset weighed 100 tons. Qr It was eighty-five feet hight, and it was conveyed a distance of 950 feet? ^ quite a feat compared with obelisk ?Q moving. This is the opinion of a house mover who has achieved a wonderful contempt for great weights. The awkward position shown in jure No. 2 is the result of having o saddle too far back from the hc.n(? bars, so that the rider can just ach the steering apparatus and no ore, and so that she has to push forird on the pedals almost as much down in propelling her wheel. The >sition which that adjustment of the achine gives makes the rider look if she were trying to keep her seat i a bucking bronco from which siiie is expecting to be thrown at any stant. If the saddle were brought rward a little and raised slightly the >sition would be good. The adjustment suld be correct if the saddle wer 3 wered so that the pedals and handle irs could be reached easily and thcj dy would find cycling much easie": id more pleasurable than she can in e attitude in which she is shown. All t"hat is necessary to make any the changes suggested and to ad st wheels so that the riders can look id be comfortable rather than awkird and uncomfortable is a monkey rench and a little common sense, 'ith those nearly all the changes that e necessary to put women's wheels proper condition can be effected. A proper position for a woman on a cycle is shown in figure 5. The ler there sits easily and gracefully, id the work of propelling her wheel not half the work exerted by any of e others. It may be interesting to baseball cranks and others to learn something about the number of baseball bats made, the quality and whence comes the material from which they are con i J- - 1 TTT1 ii. * J J 1.1 X Biruciea. naea n i? uuiiBiuercu. mm 40,000 dozen bats are handled yearly, some idea of the dimensions of the business can be formed. The materials of which baseball bats are constructed comes principally from Indiana; that is, the better quality does. Second growth ash is the standard, and this must be carefully selected and perfectly seasoned. The best bats are made from Indiana ash, cut the usual length and split, the split guaranteeing almost perfect straightness and grain. Btisswood enters into the manufac ture of baseball bats to a large extent, and is called American willow. There was a time when English willow was considered by ball players to be the best material for bats, but there is very little of this used now, and none at all by professional ball players. Pine, poplar and cottonwood are used for cheap bats for boys, and Missouri and Arkansas supplies most of this lumber. The leading baseball bat manufactory of the country is at Grand Rapids, Mich., and millions of sticks are turned out yearly from this immense concern. Milwaukee comes second, while Vincennes, Ind., is third. The latter city at one time led the country in baseball bat manufacturing, but Grand Eapids and Milwaukee have excelled the Hoosier town long ago. Of course, nearly every city of importance in the East manufactures. more or less, baseball bats, but none of them have any factories that will compare with the "Western concerns. "Years ago, when baseball was in its kindergarten stages," said a dealer in baseball goods to a Star reporter, "fancy bats were all the rage, and manufacturers and dealers vied with each other in their efforts to get gaudylooking sticks to attract the eye of the players. In those days ball players were proud of their bats because of their elegant coats of paint and varnish, but now the professionals take pride in the plainness of their-ballbitters. Dealers now make bats for the professional trade only of ash that has undergone three years of seasoning, and in general appearance they Arfl as rouffh and coarse as a common pick handle, but in perfection of shape and toughness of fiber they cannot be surpassed. "Nearly every professional has his ideal bat, and all weights, lengths and circumferences are turned out to meet the individual tastes of the players. Most professionals are cranks to some extent in regard to bats, and they spend days and sometimes weeks in scraping, shaping and otherwise finishing up the bat they expect to knock out home runs with during the playing season. Linseed oil is all the dressing professionals use on their bats. No paint or varnish is ever allowed on a stick after the player can get an opportunity to scrape it off; hence the manufacturers make what is called the professional bat without polish or trimmings."?Washington Cli. oiar. Queer Freaks of Climate. Turnips and radishes flourish in southern Alaska. . Potatoes do well, though the tubers do not attain a great size. Cabbage do not "head." Lettuce is successfully grown, though it does not ripen seed. The turnips above referred to reach a weight of five or six pounds, and have an excellent flavor; the Russians preserve the tops in vinegar for winter use. Wild peas grow in abundance on the Aleutian Islands. Along the coast 'of the mainland to the northwest of Sitka, and on some of the islands off shore all of the cereals, except corn, can be grown to perfection. Kadiak, Afognak and other islands possess a most fertile soil, with a milder and more equable climate than that of the Western States. Wild timothy grows luxuriantly in southeast Alaska. There are large areas of excellent grazing lands, notably on the great islands of the Kadiak and Aleutian archipelagoes. There is no reason why Alaska should n$>t rival Montana or Wyoming in the raising of stock. All along the coast millions of cattle and sheep might subsist on the wild grasses, with a much less percentage of loss from winter cold than in the western part of the United States, the climate being far milder and more equable. What Followed the Drinks. y In a case .of assault and battery, counsel, in examining one of the witnesses, asked him what they had the first plaoe they stopped at.
