What the (ittlP City l'eople itrr Along and Thinking of? Senator Karlc iiihI Mcl<auriii?School Klectiou?A \ow Fad in Town?PerNiMmlN. Greenwood, S. C., May 21,1S97. The recital given by Miss Annie Dell 15ar elton last Thursday evening delighted the audience which assembled to hear It. Her pupils give evidence ol the fact that Miss Harnett in the line ol her work is a success. Ihe most enjoyable features of the evemug were the vocal solos of Messrs. Wells Riley, Li. E. Riley, Mrs. DuPre and Miss Mamie Taggart, ot Abbeville, together with the recitations by MibS .Mary McGbee and Miss Hattie Hodges. Every oue regretted that Miss Harnett could not sing on account of hoarseness. The musical giveu by Mrs. D. C. DuPre and Mrs. Dr. Bailey, at ItMey's Hotel, on Tuesday evening was a decided success. The audience was pleased witti tlie vocal solos of Mrs. DuPre, Mrs. Uurckbaiier aud Miss Barnett. The recitation of Miss Barnett, "in the Usual Way," was very good Indeed, white '-The Guardian Angel Insurance Agency," are original production by .Mr. Samuel Hodges aud Dr. M. 0. Bailey, broughtdown the house. Some of the literary young people of tbe city have become so much attached to J. Gordon Coogler, that following tbe example of tnose likewise affected in Atlanta, they have formed "Coogler Club, Stauza 2." At the first meeting during the past week Mr. J. M. Connors was unanimously chosen as President, with Ml-s Aunie Hodges as Vice-Presldent. The ofliceis are very enthusiastic over our "poet laureate" aud think of inviting him to Greenwood in the near future future. Several copies of his works have been ordered which will be distributed among the meui oers of the club. L'oogler, they say, will without doubt stand alongside ol Mllloa aad Shakespeare. "The blue bird hops upon the snow. The Jay bird hops also." The people of Greenwood regret with the rest of ihe State the untimely death or Senator Josephn H. Karle. It seems Indeed sad lor him that at the noontide of tils glory aud useful career he should be cut down from among usaud denied the privileges of that high station to which he had justly risen, and 11 is indeed sad for the State that one ol her purest, noblest, and most learned statesmen should be taken from her at a lime when the lives of such men are so much above par. We have always thought that Senator E?r!e was one ol the best men, who has lived in this State In recent years, and we believe future history will accord him such a place. He was oue long useful lover for the public welfare of his Slate without a single blemish upon his record, or even a suspicion against I his character. Ills place will be hard to All in South Carolina politics. In casting about us for bis successor, who must be named in the next few days, aii eyes turn as if by instinct lo John L. McLaurln. The logic of the situation demands his appolutment, we believe he is the choice 01 two-thirds of the people of the State, and the only avoidable man who will come up to the hlijh standard set by the late lamented Earle. Young, bralnly, ambitious, and yet clean-nanaea, South Carolina can look for much from John L. McLaurln it appointed Senator to succeed Earle. The election of a Superintendent for our Graded School is now a question that Is before the school trustees. A number of candidates are out tor the place. Among them froi. \V. B. Gibson, who comes with good recommendation from Abbeville, where he has laught successfully as asMstant superintendent. Mr E. B. Kennedy, who taught tor several years as Superintendent ol the Oak illII, (Ala.,) Academy and nave universal satmlactiou, who whs alterwards called tempora rialy to the chair of (ireek and German In Ersklne College, which place lie tilled most acceptable, who has taken a special course In Vale, and is oue of the best educated young men in the State i.s also before the board. Mr. J. C. Harper, or tionea Path High School, Is also a candidate, who comes with a good re* cord behind him as the principal of that school, which lsoneol the best or its kind In ine Slate. Among others are Mr. Jones, ol Newberry, and t-rot. Scaife, of Troy. The hoard will no doubt make a good selection irom these who have applied. Dr. Geo. P. Neel, represented the Greenwood Lodge of K of P., at the meeting in Anderson last week Capt. P. L. Breeden, of Bennettsvllle, has oteu on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Dr. Burkhaiter, during last week. Samuel McKodden, Esq., ol the law firm ol Greene & McFadden. of Chestor. aud oneol itie brainiest young lawyers In ibe Slate, wan in Greenwood lor a lew hours one day laBl wtck on his way home from Anderson where he tiad bei-n to attend the K. of P., convention. Col. B. F. Cunnineham has returned to Greenwood after an absence or several days. Messrs. o.G. Faulkner and W. J. Bryson, of Abbeville, were lu Greenwood on yesterday. Miss Ma tile Deau, of Greenville, who Is now visiting Miss Lorle Marse will return to uer borne on tomorrow. Children's Day was observed in the Presbyterian church on jesterday. The exercises * ere very interesting, the children performed their part well, and all were Interested in the talk of Dr. Nail on Samuel. Mescrs. Kluard and Malker, evangelists, are now conducting a meellug In Greenwood. They have erected a large tent near the City Hotel and are preacblug three sermons a day. They are attracting considerable crowds, especially at the evenlug services. Mr. J. W. Lever took his hat in his hand instead of his baggage as he leit town on Saboath morning. The baggage however was uot as valuable to him us lime about 8:30 on yesterday morning. A nice legal question will present itself at the approaching term ol court in Abbeville. The Greenwood county act provides that the court lor Abbeville county shall retain its jurisdiction iu Greenwood county until the officers of the new county are elected and qualified; but betore the sitting of the court *11 these officers will have qualified and en tered upou the discharge of their duties. Inasmuch as some of the jurors drawn are from Greeuwood county which will be firmly es. labllsbed belore June 7th, It may well be doubted if they can be called upou to servo .sjurors for Aobevllle county, if they cannot will the drawlug of the jury be regular since "G men lrotn Abbeville county were not drawn ?
