' The Abbeville Press and Banner.! BY HUGH WILSON. ABBEVILLE, S. C., WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1897.. ESTABLISHED 1844? THE ABBEVILLE MILL. ? The Work of Getting Koady to Turn the Wheel* Goes Steadily Forward. | ^ \ Mr. Milllcan of New York 1b ihe selling agent of the Abbeville Cotton Mill, l'resi- ^ ilent Bailey saw hljn at his office on Monday ! m? J last, when the final arrangements were madr. \ I Tbis business arrangement Is very import-I / :mt anil inosi KaiiKiHCMiry in tue vuiiMinuj. i w I The work ol perfecting arrangement* for' j! 1 the building anil equipping of a splendid I I mill I as progressed steadily from the first, x J| I until now success is an assured fact. I The Abbeville Cotlon Mill Company, withf out any great boast, but in an unostentatious5 ly way. commenced ihelr enterprise. Tney 0 M did not move fast, but they have kept steadily ^ M at work, lrom the bglnntng until tuey now 9 think the chlet difficulties have been met. M The great thing now for the company to do W Is to apply those practical methods to the f operation of the mill that will briug suitable returns for the large outlay. If President Hailey should be half as sue- ^ ccsslul In operatli g the mill as lie has been in ^ building It, those who have had faith in him, and hope In the ultimate success of the enterprise, will receive a lair return for the money aA which they have put iuto It. Of course it is too soon to say when dlvidends will be paid. Even if a successful ventore, a considerable construction account will likely have to be paid belorea dividend . can be expected. ^ i The work of setting up the machinery goes ^ on daily. The shading on the second and fflr third doors is In posltion.and it is well ?dvanced in the loom room, where eight lines for the full length of the room, is being put up. Some of the curds are ready for work. ^ Carpenteis are making boxes and doing other needed work in getting ready to handle cotton. am The working of putting in a fifteen inch ^ pipe, to run water from the creek into the res ervoir has been nearly compieieu. wThe six inch pipe which was first put in has ^ ^, been taken up. fflB While those of our citizens who liave out S their money Into the mill hope to receive a falrreturn.it is also thought. that property owners and business men of the town will re- ^ ceive incidental advantages. gW At the lowest estimate some two hundred hands will be employed. If the average cost of officers and hands should be a S1.000 a week the weekly dlstributlou of ihat much cash ^ will be felt in as small a town as this. w As the mill has been provided with only T two-thirds of the machinery which will be J. necessary to fill the mill house, the probabillty is that Increased machinery will soon lol- ^ low, when the number of hands will have to be Increased. Of one thine we presume the community ? may rest assured, and that is, the mill be here for many a d?y to come, and Its beneficial ef- ^ | lects will be left for ai? indefinite time. 9 The recent business arrangements which \P President Bailey perfected during his trip lo <?$ p the North, make the stockholders feel very comfortable. ^ The success In building the Abbeville Col- ^ ton Mill Is due to the friends which Mr. Hal jw ley brought lo the enterprise. Mr. Greene, the architect, has been of Invaluable aid not only in furnishing plans for the mill, but in eullstlng the kindly offices of bis Northern Jriends. Without President Bailey, we would ^ _ not have had Mr. Greene, and without Mr. ^ Greene we would not have had as good a mill, ^ mid if we had not had as Rood a mill, we would have been unable to secure the latent ^ aud best machinery that Is to be bad. While ^ our own people have done exceedingly well In paying up thetr subscriptions, the North- ^ ern capitalists have paid every dollar that jj they promised. ^ CLEMSON COLLEGE. ? r g All Abont the Boys huU Their Siir- Jk roaudluifw. ^ Clerason College, S.
