This newspaper believes Mr. McLaurin is j right, and we admire h'.s boldness of speech. That we are to levy import duties to raise j funds to defray tbe expenses of the government is about as certain as any human can be. This being true tbe South should realize tbe fact, and ?et as much benefit from "pro* tection" as any other community. As individuals we never refuse a good fat office. Then, why should we as a commulty, stand back and allow our section to be Ignored South Carolina wants protection ou rice, Lou* l6lana wants protection on sugar, western men need protection on wool, and Southern men need protection for cotton, and all the manufactures of all the Southern states need protection. Our mechanics and laborers need to receive higher wages?which they cannot do with open ports for the reception of foreign made goods. Congressman McLaurin is right. Local seed dealers have been flooded with circulars from their bouses recently, urging upon them the importance of securing the cooperation of the congressman from this dis, trlct in getting the government to discontinue free distribution of seed. "I have received the circulars from several houses." said oue dealer yesterday, "but there is one house that seems most urgent in Its demands that has taken unfair advantage of local dealers. This bouse got the contract from the government to furulsh millions of! packages of seed to such names as the congressman might furnish. Thousands of these have been scattered throughout the country, but the contemptible part of the transaction is that this house enclosed in each package a ciroular setting forth the advantages to be derived In buying direct from the seed grower. ?
