C., Nov. 23,1896. I leave to day by way of tbe Southern tt. R. for Anderson and Wlliiamston. To-day Is a lively, Interesting day in GreenI wood. The first election under the new ; Charter lor town officers, Is being held to-day. The cause of so much interest taken over the election is a scramble for positions in tbe Council. It is strange how men love office. These latter da>8 there seems to be a perfect mania lor office, whether there Is salary or not. There Is no salary attached to these town offices, and tt is real funuy and Interesting to watch the aspirants electioneering. We have two full tickets lu the field. Mr. John L. Carr, the former Intendunt, Is at the head of one ticket for Mayor, and Mr. D. C. DuPre te at the head of the other. 1 Mr. Carr says be Is not anxious for it, but will serve If his lrlends want him. I say at the beginning, to the new Council, whoever they may be, not to let one month pass without a new guard house belnjr built. The one we have Is a disgrace to as Uvea town as Greenwood. We wish we had such a Mayor as Abbeville has, to learn some of our offenders what'lt Is to violate a town ordinance. I recommend to our new council to i employ another flrit-ciass Marshal to assist Mr. J. 11. Riley. One man cannot do the. work of a* large a towu as Greenwood- I am i reminded in this connection what the Green! wood Journal says, mercy and Ignorance do I not travel the same road. I am awure of my | 5 Ignorance, but I think I am possessed oil plenty ol mercy for such characters .is some i 3 we have in Greenwood. Then, too, 11 I aw | ' Ignorant, I think I have enough interest to | II see when men do their duty. Policy men | ' I imve to be told ot their faults, no one | else, I believe. The only fault I have louud j U wlili ihe old Council was their leuicncy 10 1 1' violators of law, and tbe guard house. >| Mr. James T. Green, olnest son of J. W.I I Green, leaves to-day lor Floildu, where he l goes wed Miss Toulou Bacon. lie and his bride will not arrive In Greenwood until one ! day next week. Alile Willams Is much belter at present. J. W. Green, Cashier, Is Improved sufficient' ly to be at bis post in tbe Bank again. Turkey shooting, over the county,Is getting > to be a tiuisancp. I say lo while men, stay at home from negro turkey shootings. Be white men und iet the negroes have their ' own politics. 1 Ml88Luella Major, daughter of the writer, > came home Friday night for the .first time, j and spent two nights with us. She says she f likes her school at Ml. Moriali veiy much. ' She has 80 pupils and is looking for more. J Tbe streets in Greenwood are so crowded I'every day, lately, that strangers ask wbat is to do, specially in town to day. Tbe G. C. & N. R. R. has| changed the name of the depot of Cross Hill, to Harris' Springs ! Harris* Springs is almost three miles from the depot. The citizens of Cross Hill don't like it. I have never seen a floer fall forgathering I crops and sowing grain. Oats and barley are . | looking Hue. Not a great deal has been sown ' yet. Cotton hns not advanced In price since tbe " election as every body predicted. If you owe money, you had better sell your cottou. 1 Several more new houses are going up in 1 dlllerent naris ol ihe town. 1 would pay to tlie readers of the Press aud Banner who are in favor of Greenwood coun| ty. not to forget the dale of elecslou, Dec. 15. L Mr. Editor, I have heen Impressed this year In my travels, with the amount of ad| vertislng done on trees and fences. I don't ' believe a man loses anything by using a > little Printer's Ink, Why, sir, I see some pla cards along the road that cover one side .of a barn and some on the doors ot negro I cabins. lean always tell when I am nearlng 1 a town by the signs on trees aud lences anu cabin doors, telling you which is the cheap1 est place to buy goods. 3 I wasglad to see the advertisement in the 3 Press and Banner of the merchants of Abber vllie saying they would closfl their stores on B Thanksgiving day. I have been a cleric and " know how a clerk feels to get a day of recre. ellon. Greenwood don't seem to haveany1 thing to be thaokful lor as they don't close their stores on Thanksgiving day. I know J from experience, that merchants don't lose 1 anything by giving their clerks a day of recreation once ana awhile durlog the year. J think a faithful clcrk should have at least lour days during the year, viz: Christmas day, First day of May, Fourth day ot July, and Thanksgiving day. NVhat say you, Mr. , Editor? 12 80, p. m.?Since writing the above, the i election was declared ineguiuua me election > stopped. 5U vott-F had been cast, but destioyed and we don't know which ticket was ahead. The friends of both tickets were actively at work. We will have to have a town registration before we can hold the 1 election. M.S.
