AbbeBSKfitoJ'Vllle thuti could hear the sound of the hamHW iner, saw and trowel in Greenwood. Mr. Joe Butler, near the G. (J. & N, 11. H. bridge on Saluda River. had u horscj to fall into the river last Thursday morning. The horse struck oil down the river (which was swolen "> or l fe<?t), swlming and wading. Mr. ISutler got iuto his balteau and followed liim down the river, overtaking him at a point known as island Kord a distance 01 eight miles from where lie fell In. I examined the horse late that afterno >n and found hlin unhurt and allright. Mr. Ilutler < says the horse was grazing in the pasture near the river, and hesnpposes he slipped into the river. The river beiug up and swift bore him down the stream. Miss Louclia Major, daughter of S. <i. Major has been elected by the patrons to teueh the Mt. Marian School the next school year. This Is a line sotiool between NinetySix and White Hall townships. Miss Nannie Major has been re-elected the third year in the Cireenwood uraded School. I erected a large handsome monument lust Friday at Ninety-Six, to the memory of Major James \V. l-'ooshe. 1 go this week to ?-rect one to the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Me(,'lain at Lower Long Cane church. They were Mr. Hob Kenedy's grand parents. We had the most dangerous and reckless shooting aflray in Greenwood last Thursday that has ever occured here In my recolection. A number of uenileman from Ninety-Six and community had some law matters to attend in l'apt. Austiu's otticc. During the progress of this suit, uud before it was finished their blood became too heated, and it burst forth in its fury in front ol Durst & I'o's. store. L'apt. Frazier and l'apt. James Rogers, Jr., were the tirst to commence shooting and soon a number of otherswere iuto it. (.'apt. Roeers says there wasabout :ii> shots tired. There must have been more than that, Irom the balls left sticking about stores and other places. Capt. Kogers, Capt. Frazier and Will Sanders were the only ones wounded. One of our citizens had a ball to, pass through his coat uleeve. One very old lady, Mrs. Logan, had to run for her lite. There is only six or seven men that we know did shoot, but there were several more thai managed so far to keep iheir ideutily concealed. From all I can learn there must have been not less than ten or twelve men shoottuirnt ihp miimt> lime. All the nariies are our ltien<ls, but we don't want to be shot by our iriends. To say the least ol' it, it was an ugly affair. If men will shoot they should bo out of town and not on a,crowded side walk, i wait to$ee what our town authorities will do about It. l-'rom the best Information I can net, there must have been !K> or :!0 ol them here that day,and no doubt every one had a concealed weapon on his person, i know not who was to blame, therefore I take no sides with any one for they are all my friends. Laurens Stewart of Ninety-Six, says that one ol the party became so frightened that he did not stop at home, but was heard from next morning at Port Uoyal waiting for a vessel to sail. We are glad for any aud all of our Iriends to come to sec us, hut wo wish they would leave their shooting irons at home, or better still, sell them to some foundry 1<?.: make cotton mill machinery out of. If there! I is one thing I abhor more than another, it Is to see a man or hoy with a pistol stuck in his i pocket and profaning the name of his Ood j who made him.; Last week my letter contained a question I from a veterau asking by what authority the I'ension Hoard granted a pension to John .Mitchell, colored,ol Greenwood. I lake pleasure in stating that in a conversation with \fulnr Fiirnou T. VVhitP mip r?f rhP hniml hi* I says i!ie board had sufficient proof before tlietn that John Mitchell, colore*I, was enrolled in the Confederate service. He hud good recoineudMtlons Iroin old veterans, lie was properly vouched lor by conlederate otlicers giving his company and regiment. The board iiad his body examined to the satisfaction of all ttie board. John Mitchell is now a very old negro, I know him personally, and 1 think as an enrolled Confederate, (free horn) 1 he was entitled to the pension he received. The question asked last week was by u veteran and not myself. 1 atn Kind I met Major White and heard It is explanation of the matter, lor 1 assure the pension board I wou Id not accuse them wrongfully. It this is not satisfactory to the veteran asking the : question, will be come out In reply. i since writing the above, our friends from < Ninety-Six'and Community came back to Ureenwood, and through the Influence of Greenwood they came to an adjustment of their grivances. All jnrties concerned signed a pledge in writing, and went home in a belter mood than they did last. Thursday. The town council were very light, on ifrll parties for such an ugly affair as this was.
