Mr. August Be?,uest former president and director of the German American Trust and Savings Bank was arrested at I o'clock this afternoon under three warrants issued by Magistrate House. The first warrant charges that Mr. Bequest on the 22nd day of april, 18!^, fraudulently and feloniously obtained $1,400 from the German * American Trust and Savings Bank by falsely representing that he had deposited with the bank as collateral security fourteen ?h?rp* of tliR stock of the German American Trust and Savings Hank, and that lie knew his pretense and representation was false and untrue. The second warrant charges him with borrowing $9,797,1") from the bank for which iie gave his note, while his personal account with the bank was credited with the amount. The third warrant accuses him of having on the 4th of May, 1S!?.">, taken a Northeastern .Railroad coupon bond of the value of $500, the property of Edmund Kavenel, which had been deposited with the bank as collateral on a note .. ... ,.i ,,i lor ?1Uj. isequesi is iiim^cu committing a breach of trust in converting the bond to his own use audi that lie feloniously carried the bond away from the bank. Constable Duke was given the warrant to execute and he went direct to Mr. Bequest's house on Society street and found him there. The officer took charge of the exbank president and escorted him to Magistrate House's office where he is now held. AX ALDKRMAX AKKKKTEK. At 2.15 o'clock this afteruoou Alderman J. Fred Lilienthal was arrested by Constable Duke in Modecai <fc Gadsdeu's office in connection with the case against Bequest. The warrant was sworn out by the same parties. Mr. Lilienthal is charced with bor rowing from the German American Trust and Saving Bank, of which he was a director, by overdraft $582.83, which is in violation of the State law, a bank oflicer borrowing from his own bank. It is classed as a misdemeanor. Mr. Lilienthal was represented by Mr. 1?. H. Gadsden. Judge House fixed his bond at $300, and Mr. F. W. Wageuer was offered as security, which was accepted. .Judge liouse fixed the bond for Mr. Bequest in the tnree cases at $9,500. Mr. Buist asked Mr. J. P. K. Bryan; who represented Mr. Bequest, who he olfered as bondsmen. Mr. Bryan was not at that hour, 3 o'clock, prepared to say who would become surety for his client. Mr. Bequest is still in the custody of the magistrate.?Charleston Post. Temptation Resisted aud Honesty Rewarded. A poor chimney sweeper's boy was employed at the house of a lady of rank | to sweep me cnimney ui me ruuui iu which she usually dressed. When finding himself ou the hearth of a richly-furuished dressing-room, und perceiving no one there, he waited a few moments to take a view of the beautiful things in the apartment. A gold watch, richly set with diamonds, particularly caught his attention, aud he could not forbear taking it in his hand. Immediately the wish rose in his niiud, 'Ah ! if you had such a one!" After a pause he said to himself, "But if I take it I shall be a thief; and yet," continued he, "nobody would know it; nobody sees me?nobody ! Does not Clod see me, who is present everywhere?" Overcome by these thoughts, a cold shivering seized him. "No," said he, putting down the watch, "I would much rather be poor, and keep my good conscience, than rich and become a rascal." At these words he hastened back into the chimney. The lady, who was in the room adjoining, having overheard the conversation with himself, sent for him the the next morniug, and thus accosted him : "My little friend, why did you not taue me waicn yesieroay The boy fell on his knees, speechless and astonished. "I heard everything you said," continued her ladyship ; "thank God for enabling you to resist this temptation, and be watchful over yourself for the future; from this moment you shall be in my service : I will both maintain and clothe you ; nay, more, procure you good instruction, which will assist to guard you from the danger of similar temotations." The boy burst into tears; he was anxious to express his gratitude, but could not. The lady strictly kept her promise, had the pleasure of seeing this poor chimney-sweeper grow up a good, pious and intelligent man." Civilized Savagery. "A rich man will give millions of dollars to a museum or a university, when he would know, if he had the talent to stop and think, that the thousands who make his wealth work like wretches from iiiorniug till night aud feed on garbage and suffocate in garrets, iu order that he may be muuitiI'Bllt "As Plutarch says, "Lions, tigers and ser{>ents we call savage and ferocious, yet we ourselves come behind them in no species of barbarity." " See that dainty lady going down the aisles of the cathedral! She looks in her silks and loveliness the very picture of purity and innocence. But look closer. Look at her head-dress! Those fluttering wings are the remains <?f song-birds whose beauty and joy once till the woods and fields, iiut their throats were silenced and their beautiful and happy lives ended forever to amuse the vanity of this spiced and be-ribboned worshiper." "We preach the Golden Kule with an enthusiasm that Is well-nigh vehement. and then freckle the erlobe with huge uiurderhouses for the destruction of those who have as good a right to Jive as we have." "Killing tournaments by "crack shots" are the order of the day. Imprisoned pigeons, suddenly freed, are shot down without mercy. In many places rival squads of armed men scour forest and prairie, indiscriminately massacreing every little creature that is not able to escape them, and for no higher or humaner purpose than just to see which side can kill the most!" "It is simply monstrous?this horrible savagery." "Hut as the aires bloom and the great wheels of the centuries grind on, all the races of the earth will become kind, and this age of ours, so bigoted and raw, will be remembered in history as an age of insanity, somnambulism and blood." Christian courtesy is not a natural product of the soul; it is rather a fruil of the Spirit, and requires cultivation the- ?ume aa other Christian graces. LSI Mi l .
