C., May I, ISM. a It Is with saduess and sorrow that I commence this letter, by announcing the death of Mrs. Fannie Strawhom, wile of Mr. W. C. ? Strawhorn. She died last Friday, May 1st, of consumption. While her death had been expected for some time, yet we hate to give up such a pure and lovable woman as she was. ? she leaves a husband, u little daughter, fa ther, three sisters anil two brothers, with a host of friends to mourn her death. It is thought by many that her little in'antdaugh _ ter will not be long in following her to heaven. I have known her twelve vears, and can truthfully shj* I nave never kDown a sweeter spirited woman than she was. She is not to dead but sleepeth. Her works will follow her. for May the God In whom she trusted shield and ed protcct her little one left behind. She was ire buried lu the Oak Grove cemetery In Green< a wood last Saturday afternoon at. 4 :? o'clock. )st tiev. Dr. Forrester, her pastor, performed the ' in burial service. Messrs. J. W. Sproles. A. J. or CartledKe, W. P. Dean, F. B. Cobb, P. S. Dew ;es and F. M.Allen acted as pall bearers, in the lo- midst ot a large crowd of relatives and o- friends. A look at her grave after she was 1 he burled would show with what esteem she was :o, held. It was literally covered with tbechoicfl est of flowers placed by loving friends. Id n. a patkiotic citizen who wili. not vote j el- fok a BOI.tek. ' be The Greenwood Democratic club was reor- ] ganlzed last Saturday afternoon. The following officers were elected : President. C. A. C. I Waller: First Vice President, T. F. Riley; i a Second Vice President, W. G. Austin ; Secre- | ad tary, W. P. McKellar; Treasurer. J. B. Sam- i Ir pie; Executive Committeeman, W. H. Whitto lock. According to the call of the county j on chairman we elected twenty-one delegates to < the couuty convention. It is thought by i some, when we get all the newcomers enroll- t ed, that the Greenwood club will number ( nearly (if not quite) out) voters, i aavisean j candidates who wish a good send off to secure \ ad the Greenwood vote. If you are not a true t ve blue Democrat, or if you are in favor of bolt- i rt" ing and leaving the (old Democratic) party, ce better not come to Greenwood. I will not \ vote for a bolter or a man that courts the ool" ored vote. It looks to me like it is time lor j our white people to learn some sense, and quit being led about by the nose like they have f been for the last six years. There is no two H. things that resembles each other more than ] jy Tillman leading his followers and a farmer i ilr leading a little two year old bull to the State j >t. fair. He puts a ring in his nose, a halter at- i id tached to the ring; he leads him any where he t wishes. Just so with Tillman. I regard Mr. 'j rillman as a dangerous man to follow. His ] prime object is notoriety of self, and selfish t gain. Did he not almost skin Judge Haskell alive for boltiDg? Did he not rake General j to Hampton for going up North to make a t ir- speech? Where is he? If the papers are cor 3e reel he is traveling all over the North and | West repeating his old threadbare South Car- | oliua speeches.and drawing his pay as Sena- t lor. It the Senate would dock his pay (and ? re all others) when they leave the halls of the i Vt Senate for such a trip, they would stay id ( their seat more closely. I used to think it an i honor to be elected Governor or to the United ( States Senate, but it hav been robbed of all its j honor. at ninety-six. ? j 5e Some of our young people went to Ninety- i ie Six last Friday ntisbt to a sociable. The ; string band trom Greenwood, composed of , n, Messrs. Pearce Pari low, Wm. McKlnney, Jno. u- Major, Eugene Riley and James Lewis Pin- J ;d son, furnished tlie music for the occasion. 1 sr They report a floe time and enjoyed their trip The next day some of the young ladles J l(] of Ninety-Six sent the above named young ' ,0 gentlemen a large handsome box of flowers, selected with taste and handsomely arraged. 6 Jr One night last week the alarm of tire was , given at the cotton mill. Wltn prompt and v energetic work the fire waB soon put out. The tire occurred In one of the warehouses where ; a quantity of cloth, about "200 bales waB stored. 1 The amouut of damages has not been assess- * d. ed yet, but it is thought that it will amount J v- to about 51,000. Fully Inquired. I failed to " ie tlnd out the cause of fhe Are. Home bales of f cloth almost totally ^burned up, others parti. tially burned and all more or less damagad re by fire and water. y COITON MILL EXPECTATIONS. The excavation for the Grendel mill will to soon be completed, and brick laylug will come mence with a vim. I expect to see the walls i"f up unci rendy for the roof Aug. 1.3th or Sept. 1st. We expec' to bear the noise of the looms >t and spindles by Jan. 1st, 1897. le 81 TELEPHONES. The telephone poles are up and ready for y the wire. I don't know tbe extent of the enJ' terprise, but the poles are t?p for a mile on j. Church street. Greenwood generally goes the j! whole hog or none. ip Mr. J. W. Duckett was able to take a little ? ride yesterday aiternoon. y NEW RAILROAD. id a- An article in the Greenwood Journal, copled from the Columbia Register, says that it work has commenced on the new railroad to 10 Greenwood. In the same article is stated: Strong & Co.. railroad contractors of New r- York, have contracted to complete the road ie from Silvern to Greenwood, a distance of sixig ty-six miles, in 150 days. (This road will run is through the portion of Edgefield county that ( id has been given to Greenwood county. This i f, will put a railroad in every portion of tbe n proposed new county. Greenwood county, , Jr with county seat at Greenwood, will be the j tn most convenient county In the State.) le ROAD MACHINES. 11 East End suggests thateach township buy a f road machine. I agree with him. In Anderjr son county they have a machine tor every ] ?n two townships. You can tell when you cross 'l the line between Abbeville and Anderson ( it. counties. Both counties have their roads st arched to tbe centre, but the difference is, in re Abbeville county the arch Is turned bottom I to side up. I 30 A i.uruoi.^u siu^c? ruiv a 'juuu vrritn. Messrs. Leavell <t Gage have 6old and shlp" ped a nicely polished imposing stone to Mr. Hugh Wilson for the Press and Banner office. It Is a good and substantial building 22x60 feet. It has a tower lor the bell. The house Is divided Into two rooms by a movable partition, and can be used as a church or schuol room. Watson near Calhoun mills. To say that I enjoyed my % lslt at his home would hardly express It. He and his family were ur very klud and genial. Mr. Watson isoneol the largest farmers in Abbeville county. He runs twenty-five plows, makes plenty of corn, oats aud wheat to do hirn and somd to sell, and then all the cotton he can, which Is no ' us small amount.
