Hops-Knigbti, <Src. NIoety-Six, S. C. Jan. 13,1896. Preaching In tbe Baptist and Presbyterian churches yesterday by the regular pastors, Revs. Curtis and Jaoobs. Mrs. W. B. Nichols has returned from a short visit to friends in Columbia. Tbe school at Mt. Lebanon had to be suspended on account of measles. Mrs. Ellis, of Cross Hill, and Miss Sallie ElIts, or Edgefield, are staying with Mrs. James S. Perrln. Mr. E. C. Rice, who Is tbe Junior member of tbe Arm .of Hall & Rice, of Greenwood, is a native of Nlnety-81x. We are Justly proud of Mr. Rice and commend him to the good people of the "Gate CJty." The "tax meeting" or rather anti-tax meeting in our town Inst Saturday was, we think, of great Importance to tbe taxpayers along the line of the C., K. & W. Railroad. Mr.' W. J. Moore, of Cokesbury, with his usual dignity, presided and Capt. R. F. McCaslan acted as Secretary. Nothing, of course, could be done at tbls meeting. The following gentlemen were appointed upon a committee, with the Chairman as ex-officlo chairman of tbe committee: W. T. Jones and W. H. Moore, Df Cokesbury: J. H. Brooks and J. McD, Ki nard, of Cooper township, and J. P. Phillips and M. H. Coleman, of Nlnety.Slx. They will Investigate aDd report at a subsequent meeting to be called by the Chairman. Miss Arcbie Bozeman will take charge of Oakland Academy tbis morning. Miss Archie is an accomplished young lady, and will make an efficient teacher. The Knights of Pythian had bad a big oys ter supper last Friday nlgbt at the residence of Mr. Joel C. Wier. Quite a number of visiting Knightswerein attendance; among them we noticed Prof. Wilson and Capt. Sparkman, Mr. Simpson Partlow and Mr. H. M. Johnson, of Greenwood. They bad a Jolly good time and the festivities of tbe occasion will long be remembered. It will be remembered tb^twhen the bondholders of the C., K. & W. Railroad brought suit for tbe payment of Interest on their bonds, that Ninety Six township, through the board of County Commissioners employed the Hon. E. B. Gary to represent the taxpayers, that bis fee was paid by Ninety-Six township ; a tax was levied and colleoted lor that purpose. Mr. Gary carried out bis contract He won tbe case in tbe U. S. District Court. After Mr. Gary was elected Associate Justice of the State Supreme Cohrt, Mr. Miller, of Charleston waR In charge of tbe case. There Is a fee to be paid and more money will be necessary to carry the case farther. As a matter of right would it not bft tbe proper tblng for tbe other townships along tbe line to foot tbe bills? We throw tbis out as a suggestion only, for we feel that the other townships ought to know these fRCts, and knowing them tbey will not allow Nlnety^lx township to bear all tbe burden. Tbe bop at tbe hotel on last Wednesday nlgbt was a success. Among tbe visitors we noticed Miss Evans, of Florida, Miss Chiles, of Kdgefleld, and Miss Davis, of Abbeville, besides many of the beauties of tbe surrounding country. The dance was purely a social aflalr, and we can 6ee no barm in these little pleasures. Messrs. Ham and Wallace Payne are out after a spell of measles. Mr.and Mre. Langston, after enjoying tbe Christmas holidays among their friends In Laurens and Newberry, are back again. 1 Mrs. J. A. Stuart, of Greenville, is spending a short while at her father's, Dr. W.A,. Sanders at Rlverland Plantation. Air, vxeurgo ?i. ittyiur auu lur, nuurow Stock maD, two of the largest taxpayers of our towD, were at the meeting on last Friday. Many of.our largest planters are of the opinion tbat the oat crop is not seriously hurt. We hope tbey are correct, as a large area has been planted In this community. Mrs. Ed. Motte, of Greenville, Is spending a short time with her father, Capt. M. B. Lipscomb. We would not be understood as being In favor of A dispensary at Ninety-Six. We do hot approve of dispensaries in small towns. Especially are we opposed to one at NinetySix. We do notneed one here: we aie a small community and can and will control tbe blind tiger. Mr. M. H. Coleman and others from New Market were here last Friday attending the anti-tax meeting. Greenwood contemplates establishing dispensary within her borders. If we lived at Greenwood we would vote for it. We >egard it as t heir only defence against tbe blind tiger. It Is almost impossible to suppress tbe i linen saie 01 wnisgey. utner communities than Greenwood bave tried it and failed. There Is do doubt that the dispensary plants the best solution of tbe whiskey business. We are satisfied tbat Greenwood would not submit to barrooms, but In order to down tbe blind tiger let them accept tbe least of all tbe whiskey evils?tbe dispensary. Mr. J. S. Wilson has moved and. taken part of tbe Pope mansion. jk Mr. Tbomas Callaham, of EdflgOeld, has moved to Ninety-Six. He will bosnl with his brotber-in-law, Mr. E. N. DeVore. We would remind owiiers of Btock that it is a great nuisance to allow them to run at large. We all have nloe green patches sown especially for our own use and not for the worthless scrubs that are allowed to roam at will over the town. Nine drummers lodged at tbe Ninety-Six Hotel last week. We will supply the teachers of the public schools wit b registers as soon as we can get tbem. We hope they will be patient. Capt. M. B. Lipscomb, after wrestling with rheumatism for some time, is out again. East End. I - ' - - Coleman's Locals. . M. T. Coleman moves thin week Into the store occupied by Wm. E. Bell. It will be known tben as tbe Rocket Store. Don't read this! There were 1,500 dolls sold at the Racket Store for Christmas. Nota single one being left in the honse, and in fact {tbe entire stock of general merchandise was sold down In proportion. When you are in town it will be to your Interest to go into Coleman's Racket Store, as you can always find things cheaper there than anywhere else, quality considered ol . course, as be makes It a rule not to Bell goods that won't give satisfaction. Mr. M. V. Cllnkscales will be found at the Racket Store. He will De glad to see his friends there, and to serve them in any way possible. kiunuuu OUT 60 DAYS C TITT'O WTm r U JTL1N J. ? Fennel, who moved from this place to Tocooa about a year ago, to serve It as pastor again. We are glad ol this and hope that he will accept. Messrs. G. T. Baker, J. 0. Thomas, 8. W. Barnes and several others of onr citizens went to Abbeville Monday. There was a big turkey Bhootlng below here last week, at which, some twelve or fifteen changed hands. Mr. W. H. Shanklln, oar popular depot agent, took advantage or a few days leave of absence to visit his old home at Grovetown, Ga. He turned over for the time being tbe depot affairs to Mr. Charles Horton, who. a day or two thereafter, was taken down with the measles, and a? there was no one else here who understood telegraphy, there was no chance to notify tbe railroad authorities of tbe sitnation, and had It not been that Mr. 8. R. Parker, of Calhoun Falls, coaid and did come up every other day, we would have been in a bad fix. Mr. W. W. Thompson, of. Wllllamston, Wednesday evening, and that night was the guest of bis nncle, Mr. T. D. Cooley. Rev. ?. W. Mason was called to Donalds on business Tuesday. He went by the dirt road, returned by rail road. Mr. Van Swearlgln, of Mexico, bis sister. Miss Leila, of Abbeville, and Miss Meta Brownlee. of Penney's Creek, were in town Tuesday gueets of their ancle, Mr. E. W. Harper. Miss Mary C. Dnpre, of Fort Hill, reached here Tuesday, to remain for some time, with kinsfolk. Mr. E. J. Hackabee went to Abbeville Wed* nesday where he will be for some days. Miss Ophelia Cochran, has been with tbe family of ber ancle, Mr. W. G. Haokabee, for tbe past few days. We bear of a wedding, (think ot It, a wedding) that took place, some time ago, at which there were aboot forty invited male gaesta, and no females ezoeptlng the bride, her mother, and perhaps one or two others. A few days ago, thlB writer while looking over some old papers, among them found some love letters written In 1827. Tbey were written at Mllledgevllle, Satidersville, Louisville, Ac., (and directed to Abbeville u. H?) and tbe hostage upon each of them, was 18% cents. The paper upon wblob tbey were written, was folded and fastened together with sealing wax. Tbey were penned In a plain, unvarnished dignified style, and were by no means a prototype of tbe gosblng effusions of tbe love sick swains of tbe present day. It may be asked bow does be know ? He answers, that be baa seen botb. A rumor is afloat bereabots tbat worries us a good deal. It Is, tbat after yesterday, tbe day passenger trains, upon tbe G? C. <fc N. railroad will be discontinued. The measles still having material to work on, are still In our midst. Tbev bave been unusually liberal, having visited both white and black, and a good many twice, and now 'tis said some of the horses bave tbem. All or this is a powerful strain on tbem. Mr. Ernest Latimer bad some of bin friends to tea, Friday night. They enjoyed themselves very much. Mr. Baskln Sherrard, or Moffattsville, worshipped with the Methodists In Smyrna church yesterday. An Overcoat and a Flying Jfsjrro. As a rule, an overooat 1b a Rood thing to wear, but Reuben Adams, a very, good colored man of this county, has been Impressed with tbe fact tbat tbere Is sometimes danger In wearing i long tailed coat too near to tbe re- I volvlng shaft of a gin. Last Friday ne was a spectator at tbe gin of tbe Messrs. Glllam Bros., some five miles west of Abbeville, taking an interest in tbe machinery as It performed its appointed duty. All of a sudden, i Reuben's coat tall got mixed up with tbe swiftly revolving shaft, by wblcb be was standing. In tbe twinkling nf an eye be was i revolving around that shaft at lightning < speed. He didn't bave time to give a good i square yell, but It happened tbat the engineer saw him, and stopped tbe machinery as quickly as possible. Ibe only thing tbat saved Reuben's life was tbe fact tbat he bugged tbe sbaft, otherwise be wonld bave been fralled to pieces. When the machinery stopped be was unconscious. He was "laid out'' and aftap nwhiip h? "come to." If he bad not bugg ed that shaft be would have been an angel lu a minute from Ibat time, and the wings would already be sprouting on tbe seraphic form of Reuben Adams. As it is Reuben will have to wait another opportunity to secure tbe angel wings. Cow Stolen. STOLEN from Mrs. Jane C.
