"And Dick Harvey doesn't like it any better when becomes over here," said Frank. "1 heard him say he had got ever so many stone bruises in that path. He was grumbling about it yesterday." "Why don't you clear the way between here and your neighbor's?" asked Mr. Morris. "You would much better do that than take time to grumble about it." "Why, we never could get all the stones out of the path !" cried Jem. "Not all in one day, nor by taking all the stones at once," said the father. "Hut if each of the boys who cro?* there would takea stone out of the way every time hegoes, the work would be done. Try it." ? The bovs did trv it. There were a half dozen lads who used the path, and each one helped to clear it by doing a little every time he went that way. By this means the stones were cast out and the path was cleared. This is exactly the way to make it easier aud pleasanter for others in this world. Let each one make it his business, as he goes through life, to take some little hindrance out of the way whenever he can. Little faults should be cured, and little temptations that cause unwary feet to stumble should be removed. Small unkindness should be confessed and careless ways amended. Trifling slights should be smoothed over, sharp words, dropped in tits of ill temper, should be taken back, as far as may be. All these things will make the path of life smoother. It is well worth while to clear the way. "Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway gather out (he stones; lifl up a standard for the people." tr&y. v Vicious Company. The following beautiful allegory is translated from the German : Sophronius, a wise teacher would not suffer even his grown-up sous and daughters to associate wan mose whose conduct was not pure and upright. "Dear father," said the gentle 1 JSolalia to-him one day when he * forbade herj in company with her brother, to visit the volatile Lucinda? "dear father you must think us very* childish if you imagine that we should be exposed to danger by it." The father took in silence a dead coal from the hearth, and reached it ' to bis daughter. "It will not burn you, my child ; take it." Eulalia did j so, and behold ! ber beautiful white! hand was soiled and blackened, and, as it chanced, her white dress, also. We cannot be too careful in holding coal." said Eulalia, in vexation. "Yes, truly," said the father. "You i see, my child that, even if they do not burn, they blacken ; so it is with the company of the vicious." Curing Ham. 1 am assured upon good authority I that finely powdered borax, sprinkled upon hams and shoulders and' rubbed iii when taken out of bulk to be hung j up to smoke and cure, will effectually prevent skippers. I was pleased with j the result last year, and I will further make the trial of this simple remedy ! this year. Borax is cheap and a sure, preventive of the dreaded skipper, j Thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of the best part of the hog will be saved, and instead of mortification and los9 to the discomfited housekeep, er a beam of joy will sit upon the i >. ^untenance of the good housewife as: she brings forth her uicely baked ham, j and knows that it is without suspicion, i as she places it upon the festive board. Boil slowly until! they begin to soften : remove from the water and when cold enough to handle' squeeze until at the juice is extracted, j strain and add enough loaf or crushed i sugar to make it palatable, being care-j ful not to make it too sweet. Add j about twice as much water as there is' juice. This preparation may be made j every morning, or enough may be! prepared one day to lust three or four! days, but it must be kept in a cool1 place. Are You Kiinl to Your .Uollu-r. Who guarded you in health, and j comforted you when ill? Who hung! over your little bed. when you were: fretful, and put the cooling draught to: your parched lips? Who taught you I how to pray, and gently helped you : how to read? Who has borne with' your faults, at d been kind aud patient in your childish ways? Who loves you still, and who contrives and works and prays for you every day you live? Is it not your mother, your own dear mother?
