In a total of nearly S8S.OOO we see no tne tion of any Investment In Abbeville count Over fifty thousand dollars of tbis large su Is out on "personal bonds," aud the presuin tion Is that Newberry people are reaping tl advantage of a large per cent, of that amouti We do not know the mean!ne of "loans building fund," and therefore can throw t light on that part of tbis subject. But it is clear that over twenty thousai dollars of our money has been Invested i aiding the credit or business enterprises other cities and towns, while it does not a pear that one cent ol the SS5.U00 has Been i vested in like manner in Abbeville county. There must be a reason for this dlscnmin tion, or else in the general chapter of act dents. It seems that some of It would ha' come our way before reaching the uttermo bounds of the earth. .Just read again the li of investments from Chester to (.'hlcngo ai from Wlnnsboro to Atlanta. Railroad bonds may be Kood. Sometlm they are, and sonTetlmes they are not. Cn bonds may be good. The same may be true all the investments, but we venture to ss that in all these investments there is not 01 more safe or more profitable than would ha' been tbe school bonds ot the city of Abb vllle. Tbe highest courts in all the land ha1 validated and made legal and binding tl bonds which are issued for school purpose and yet not one cent of Erskine's mom came this way. It went as you see from il ' WPort. Not a single investment named the Can possibly be as safe as a school boi which has I been properly issued t any corporation whose taxable property worth the watoant of the bonds. Next to ti bonds of the United States, the school bon< are the safest and best. Tbe Courts will e force the collection and payment of princip and interest. Investments in State bom have only tbe honor of the Legislature to pr tect them. The Courts cannot be used to ei force the collection of a State bond. We see no evidence that all the endowmei fund of Ersklne College has not beeu witl drawn from Abbeville, though it is posslb that a part of tbe fifty thousand dollars i "personal bonds" may yet be due and owlc by citizensof Abbeville county. The proof conclusive, however, that much of it hi gone abroad. * Even if Erskine's near neighbors f\re n< deserving of special consideration it would t nothing but fair not to discriminate again them.
