THE OLD FORT, * ? _ KaM Eiul I'uzzleil Over I he Xew 4'onuly (tuesllon ? Negro PolHieiaiiN I'imiiii; Awn.v-1'erNoiiiilN. Ninety-Six, S. C., Sept. lf>. jss>~?. The Rev. J. C. Sto!l commenced a series of thn Mnihndist church here yes terda.v. All arc cordially invited to attend. Prof. T. F. Wright lias been elected principal of the Coronaca High School. He is one of the finest teachers in the country and we congratulate Coronacaon her choice. The Kev. F. O. S. Curtis has just closed an interesting meeting at Damascus. -Mr. J. P. Burnett, one of the best and cleverest citizens of I'hoenix county was in town last Saturday. The Ninety-Six High School was opened on last Monday the 9th. Prof. Cork informs us that the opening was satisfactory. Miss Ida Scott, of Mor^anza, has been 5, spending a short while with Miss Lucille Chapman. Mr. J. A. Calhoun has established a public gin lils house in Cow Grove. Mr. E. N. DeVore will move in a few days to the store next door to Mr. E. M. Lipscomb. Mrs. K. 0?. Johnson, of Columbia, Is visiting her mother, Mrs. Bettle D.Johnson. Former colored politicians and otlicials pass away. Recently William Holland died on the plantation of Mr. J. A. Calhoun. In 1873 and 1*74, we believe it was, he represented Abbeville county in the Legislature. Nothing of interest characterized his career, but that of stealing the Ninety-Six bill, I which had passed its '2nd reading. It was reported and it was generally believed that he sold it for 520 in gold. Wesley Fletcher was also a politician of local prominence, was Chief of Police In this place for several years. He was a giantamong his class being six feet and nine Inches high. Both however unobtrusive ouiet men and elve the :;* community very little trouble. Peace 10 their ashes. Mr. and Mrs- J. II. Crawford, who have been staying at Mr. W. L. Fouche's left for their home in Greenwood yesterday. Last Saturday was the busiest day In Ninety-Six for several months. A good deal ol cotton was sold and money seemed to be circulating Ireely. Mr. \V. H. Frazier has gone to Knoxvllle to ariend the meeting of the Sons of Veterans and the races. His striDg of horses proceding him. Messrs. H. J. and G. M. Kinard have returned from a trip to Newberry on business and pleasure. The survey for the new county is nearly completed, will be ready for the Legislature. The Bulphur springs in Cow Grove are a daily resort for some of our town people. The water is fine and health giving. Miss Aggie Galpbin gave a nice party In honor of her visitor Miss Maggie Littleton, of T Augusta, last week. NVe do not know what to write in reference to the new county. It is hard to tell what the convention will do. The members seem to be very changeable In their notions. Our own opinion is that they should make a constitution and come home as speedily as possible. The Legislature we think is the proper body to make new counties. Our delegation, at least, was not elected for uny such pur?r ooiciotir>n is not noDular In puscn, Opcvmi uvgt?<Mv?v? ? ? -?South Carolina and to make one or two new ; v. counties, while a dozen are knocking at the door will not satisfy our people. Let everybody get ready and go before the Legislature and let thein be established wherever they t will do the most good. ( - Mr. George M. Auderson has lately repaired and refurnished his large ginnery and is prepared to do your ginning on short order and good style. He is a patron of ttie Press and banner aud insures in the Lloyds. Air. T. S. Blake Is still suffering with his eye. His physician thinks that tie will soon be out, "And Butler it shall be.'' We are glad the convention changed the name from Saluda to , Butler. It was a fitting compliment to an illustrious family. U [Note.?East End had not heard of the cliange to Saluda. It stands right now. No county ought to be named after anybody.? Ed. P. & B. MissSallie Smith, a sweet, pretty little girl J3^f" 1 roui Chappels was up last Sunday. It is still very dry and we fear late corn, peas and collards will be cut oil. East End. THE FACTORY. ? . . fc ; Tlie Directors Kcsolvc to Sell 11 Limited Amount ot? Stock on the Instnl incut 1'lun. At a recent meeting of the Directors of the Abbeville Cotton Mill it was d<'lertnined to make another eirort to increase the subscriptions to the capital stock, and active efforts will be made iu behalf of the Institution. The Directors have faith in the enterprise themselves and have subscribed or will subscribe according to their ability, and will not ask any man to put his money where they do not put their own. They are more desirous for cash subscriptions than lor subscriptions on the instalment plan, but will be glad to get any help In whatever way may be most agreeable to the subscriber. One plan is to sell subscriptions on the Instalment plan. That is to say : Twenty per cent, cash this winter, and twenty per cent, each succeeding November until the whole is paid. The instalments to bear no interest until due. Statistics show, so we are told, that fewer factories fall than any other enterprise. A large per cent, of the merchants fall, banks often fail, and business ventures generally frequently fail, but it is a rare thing to see or hear of a cotton factory failing. Looking at it as we do. It is me saiesi ana best investment that can be made. When it is once started it goes on forever. It will last until tbe youngest child living will die of old age. The dividends are sure, no matter what happens. If any set of directors, or any set of officers do not make mouey out of it, then the stockholders, who meet every year, will turu them out. There never was a more favorable opportunity for getting stock than is now presented and we have no doubt that many will take advantage of this offer of the Directors to sell a limited amount of stock on the instalment plan. The opportunity will not last always. The contractors, Messrs. Wilson & McMillan are progressing with the brick-making. They burnt another kiln last week of earnly . >00,000. and are alteady building another large kiln. The one million notch will be reached this week, aud it is probable that another kiln will be burnt next woek. The contractors will rind it hard to get the second million made this Fall. The Directors are anxiously waiting to hear from the architects, and are anxious to commence to lay the bricks in tiie wall at the earliest day possible. BRADLEY BRIEFS. Sliot liy Mistake ?
