Kiorn present Indications, quite a less number of tons of guano will be sold at this piace tbis year than for several years, based on that opiuion, aiul assertions from many planters, the acreage In cotton will tie considerably reduced. The prospect of:? or cent cotton next fall and winter will cause many of them to increase their breadstuff crops. i'rof. and Mrs. J. K. Harper aud little lleury were among kiuslotk here yesterday. To our way of thinking, wtien almost everything seems to be out ot Joint, there would be more equity and Justice, it the time for the assessment of pronerty .especially that of planters, was nearer to the time tor the payment ot taxes. We are lead to this opinion in seeing how some property issauriticed under the present plan. For instance, last winter a certain man bought two mules for which lie was to pay this last winter. He gave a mortgage upon those two, as well as one he already owned. At 5 cents cotton he could not pay for the mules, and not a great while ago the mortgage was foreclosed, the three mules publicly sold and brought only Sl.'!il, just half of what was to be paid for the two .Now, no doubt, they were assessed at a higher valuation, than they sold for and a corresponding higher tax had to be paid. . Those words comforted : } and encouraged the disciples in danger, i temptation, and sorrow. "Fear not, I - only believe." "Fear not for it is I." There is no sorrow! r which they may not lighten, and no! foe whom they may not conquer. ? For myself I am certain that the ^ good of human life cannot lie in the . possession of thiugs which for one ? man to possess is for the rest to lose, " but rather in things which all can 2 possess alike, and where one man's i wealth promotes his neighbor's. ' Are all our losses accidents, and all \ our gains special providences ? I ? - ~ Flattery is like cologne water?to be j! smelt of, not swallowed. Those who have once known what [ it is to be with Jesus, cannot be cont tented away from him. j r It is astonishing how many people! s were expecting what happened yesfer-j day, aud how few have any definite; ide:i as to what will come to pass' to-morrow. The richest man in the world can oft'er the petition of the Lord's prayer. "Give us day by day our daily bread," ( if he will only pray as he ought, with i " some oue who is hungry. There are two sides to man's duty,? one looking God-ward, and the other , 1 man-ward. But love is b.ick of every , phase of true duty-doing. t We ought to have hope for the future - in the darkest present hour. The j words of Jesus are spoken to inspire t t our hope. It is our privilege to gain encourage?I ment from the words and ways of Jesus He is our inspiration in this life, as ! r well a* our savior for always. If we look down, then our shoulders j stoop.
