Wednesday. Feb. 13, 1895. War is threatened between Mexico, and Guatemala over the boundery lilit* of the two countries. All the other Central American Kepublict seem to be backing Guatemala. By collision with another vessel, the steamer Elbe was sunk thirty miles otr the cou9t of England, and of the :JSO people on hoard were saved. The first cur load of South Carolina contributions to the starving sutlerers in Nebraska was shipped from Charleston, S. February 1. Several successful raids upon "blind tigers" have been made in Columbia and other parts of the State during the past week. The explosion of an ice house boiler in El in wood, R. f., February 4, killed three men, and wounded ten others. The Woman's Suffrage convention of the United States was held in Atlanta, da., January Effect of the Trolley on Watches.-A great many men are wondering what is the matter with their watches. Never sidco the town'was a town have there been so many pocket time pieces taken in for repairs. The introduction of the electric wire for propulsion, making the car stop and go fast or slow, affects the average watch in n similar manner, and fortunate is tinman who gets off a trolley with his watch in the same condition as it was before. He may catch a train or reach bank in time to pay a bill, but it will be by town clock time, not his own. Every watch thus affected has to be! demagnetized.?Philadelphia Times Sure Cure for Hydrophobia. The first dose for a person is one and one-half (1J) ounces of Elecampane root?bruised?put in a pint of new milk, reduced to one-half by boiling, the taken all at one dose in the morn ing, lasting uuiii aiieruoun, ur i least a very light diet after several j hours have elapsed. The second dose the same as the first, except take Ivv<? i ouuces of the root ; third dose, same! as the last, to he taken every other' day. Three doses are all that is need-! ed, and there need be no fear. A dose j for a horse or a cow should he about: four times as great as for a persou. | This remedy has been used in Philadelphia over forty years, with great; success, and is known as the Good- j man remedy. This physician is ac-; (juainted with one who has known of its use thirty years, but never knew a case that failed, where this remedy was properly administered. It is not too late to give this medicine any i time before the spasms come on. ^ A Horse's Eleven Requests. For Chapped Hands and Lips.? Take equal parts of mutton tallow and gum ehamphor and melt up together ; apply as often as desired. 1. Don't pound or beat me. 2. Cover me when I am too warm or eold. .'I. Don't stand me in a draft. 4. Don't overload me. 5. Dou't compel me to work when I'm sick. Don't cut my feet too much when I'm shod. 7. Don't over-drive and under-feed me. S. Remember that I have feelings. f?. Don't water me, when I have been driven a long distance, until 1 am cool. 10. Talk to me kindly. 11. Treat me as you would like to be treated if you were a horse.?Our Dumb Animals. To Start Hens Laying.? Sometimes food rich in nitrogen, carbon and mineral matter will . produce the desired result. Half a pound of linseed meal, given three times a week co < 20 hens and first mixed with ground J grain has been known to start all tliej hens in a tlock to laying. A mess of cut bone and meat will make a won-| derful change if the hens have been kept mostly on grain. Warmth is an 1 excellent assistant. It is better to scat-; ter corn and wheat in litter than to put it in a trough, as each hen will then have to work for her share, and the greedy hens cannot rob those that are timid. Marmalade Pudding: Let the bread X/.lIX 111 Wiu ?.Viri U1ILII 7HI1I, 111CII ?>111 into a clean muslin cloth and wring all the water out; the old bread will then appear almost like fresh bread crumbs. Mix well two large cupfuls of the prepared bread, half a cupful of finely chopped suet, three parts of a cupful of moist sugar, the same of marmalade, and moisten with a little milk. Put into a well-greased mold or basin, tie down with a floured cloth, boil or steam for two hours, turn out on a dish, sift over with fine sugar and serve. Candied Orange or Lemon Peel: The peel of these fruits is removed and the inner lining stripped from it. Then the peel is dipped into sugar syrup, not boiled in it but merely (lipped so that all the pores of the peel should lie sealed u?. Boilinir it would make it into n sort or preserve. The syrup must be so far boiled that when a litlle is taken up in a spoon and dropped into oold water, it is brittle to the touch. It would be well to remember that during the long winter evenings you can occupy your lime profitably by reflecting upon the mistakes of last season, and devising some means by which you can overcome them in the future. The day after a.snow storm is usually very clear, because the snow in Tailing brings down with it most of the impurities of the air, and leave the atmosphere exceedingly pure. ? - ? A girl once heart] a bit of wisdom j from the lips of a very aged woman? \ a woman who had rounded the fill 1 j term of ninety years, and with eyes still bright and clear looked out upon ) the inrollirig waters of eternity. The; girl was impressed by the emphasis j with which tue venerable dame said i lo her : "JJessie. never insist on having the l.ast word." The determina-i tion to have the final word leads to more quarrels and more bitlerm-ss of | feeling at home than almost anything else in domestic life. The fact is, thai one may so control her tongue and her eyes that she may allow her opponent the pleasure of this coveted concha'-J iugthrust, and yet placidly retain her, own opinion, and in the homely colloquial parlance of the up-country, where one finds strong-willed people! living together in great peace with the ! jmost pronounced diversify of characteristics, "do as she's a mind to." ; Anotherbitof wisdom may be eon-j jdensedinto a pithy sentence. Avoid |explanations. In some families nothing is taken for granted. Every action j every decision, every new departure, [every acceptance or rejection of an j invitation must be endlessly talked I and fussed over, explained and re-explained. As a rule, beyond : your parents or your husband there is j nobody who has the right to demand i oi yon explanations ai every siep uj I your onward path. Don't give them. {Establish a reputation for keeping your own counsel, ft will serve you well iu many a crisis, and be no end of a comfort. Again, don't be forever setting people right.
