THE CLOSING YEAR. ? . ~ - u""lIntuMta nl 4hllf>l il|p! 1 IIV UHmnvDSf --- lu Good Condition. Tbe year 18S4 is drawing to a close, and wlille the times are hard the people have many good things for which to be thankful, and those who keep good heart, may look forward hopefully for greater and better things in the future. The people of tbe town of Abbeville, as a whole, have been blessed with good health, aDd their energy has accomplished much In a material point of view. Some Individuals have made money and laid it away in bonds and mortgages, while a much greater number have spent their money iu building up the waste places 01 the town. About one hundred dwelling bouses have been built, and nearly every one of them Is paying a liberal rent on tbe money invested. Quite a number of the stores have been remodelled and given tbe appearance of bright new structures. The large and Imposing block of stores on the Dendy corner will long stand as a monument to tbe public spirit ami enterprise of the builders, Messrs. P. Rosenberg & Co. There are no prettier stores in town. Among the notable work on tbe stores we would mention that Messrs. W. Joel Smith &Sons have put new iron and plate glass Ironts to their elegant store rooms. They have built a splendid warehouse which will be connected by roof with their stores. Tbe Methodist church is being remodeled, enlarged and beautified. It win be, when finished, one of tbe nicest churches in the State The door, sash and blind factory of tbe Abbeville Lumber Company was built this year, and set in operation. Including tbe operatlng and warehouse departments, it is one of the largest and best equipped establishments in the upcountry. The carnage, wagon and buggy shop on tbe Alston lot was put up this year. A chartei for a canning factory and laundry has been secured, and capital stock has been subscribed. Tbe electric light plant and ice factory is in. omhrvn Aside from these evidences 'of thrift and prosperity, there are other and still more con^ spicuous facts of which to be proud. As far as is known, the financial standing of every business firm is on a solvent basis. We have not in the year just closing had a single failure. But many new firms have been opened up. Cohen's big stock of clothing was brought here In tbe Fall. The Messrs. Daly & Co. opened an extensive stock of ladles fine goods in October. Mr. Bernau this Fan brought to Abbeville tbe largest and best stock of watches and silverware ever seeu in this part of the country. His Btock makes an exhibit which Is indeed beautiful to look upon. Mr. Thomas P. Thomson has opened a stock of fancy groceries next to the New Hotel, and is doing a fine business. Messrs. McDlll & Tolly, enterprising and worthy youn- men, have opened a beautiful and attractive Jtock of furniture and tbe collateral goods. In addition to furniture, they keep a good stock of coffins, and a fine new hearse has been ordered. Mr. Leltchensteln come among us last Fall with a full line of clothing and gentlemen's furnishings. Mr. Younger, the butcher, has lately put up a beef market, and bis methods and his beef have drawn hosts of customers. Mr. C. K. Bruce has put up a boot and shoe shop in which be does great quantities of shop work. Messrs. Bryant ?fc Ricbey have opened a nice and attractive stock of fancy groceries, fruits, etc., in tbe remodelled and nicely fixed store on the east side. Mrs. Adams has established her restaurant ia the new building next to Hill & Sons carriage repository. Emanuel McKellar keeps nice fruits and furnishes meals to the hungry. VV U r nrt n? Our planters are very much behind in the sowing of la 11 oats and other small grain, very little having been sown, but noth-. ing else could have been looked for as the gathering 01 a large cotton crop 1b always at the expense of other important crops.
