Kr-., < * Tronpe* Talk Abont the People nml Things on Rocky River. Lowadesville, S. C., Nov. 19,1894. Mr. Jas. M. Baker went to Augusta Wednesday, on to Columbia that night, and took in ? the lair for a day or two, which he pronounces inferior to former ones, as to attendance, as well as exhibits. BMiss Bertha Sbarpe, of Anderson, came 1 over last week and is assisting Mr. Kirkpat rick In our high school. rr Mr. Sam Baker, of Anderson, was down one day last week and bought fifty bales of cotton. Mr. A. L. Latimer gave a party Friday night, to his Sunday school class consisting of ten or twelve young men. To add to the pleasures o( the occasion be also Invited a like number of young ladies. These wete given a splerdid supper, consisting of everything nice and palatable, which was greatly enjoyed by all. The class greatly appreciate this kindness of Mr. Latimer, and will long remember it. Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Barnes have charge of *" . Moeeley House, during the absence ot Dr. and . Mrs. J. B. Moseley, who is in Atlanta. Ga. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts, of East Tennessee, are now stopping at the Moseley House, for an indefinite period. Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Barnes, left yesterday for perhaps a pretty long stay in Charleston. Winter is upou us ana the marriage bells 'y :. are about to ring, so said. Several marriages hereabout, have been talked* of for sometime. wnicn Will UDUDllCW ue cuunauiaicu ju vuc x, near futnre. Yesterday In the forenoon there was no preaching in any of our churches, Sunday schools In ail, and preaching In the Methoob a rob at 7 p. m? by the pastor Kev. J. D. . v Croat, which was his last for this conference year. ~v What is getting into the Press and Banner, last week it gave us fourteen pages. It seems *_ to have "got a going" in the enlargement line, and already gives us far more reading and advertising matter, than any paper coming to this office or any other, that we know of* Mr. R. W. Speer, of Anderson, run down yesterday to see his home folks, the family of Dr. A. J. 8peer. The cry goes up from our little place, lor more young ladles, there being now, but two -'-P. ' or three within our Incorporate limits. It would be a charitable act, for several to come, for awhile, at least as in a few years we will be independent of the outside world in this respect, as we will then have a home raised thanksgiving day will soon be upon us. ' How many of onr people are preparing to ob '/ serve It as in the days of youre. We, of this part, this South have much to be thankful Tor in the way of good crops, but from the present outlook It seems to us, that we would have to be powerful thankful for small favors, to see much Joy or cause for thanksgiving In national political affairs. We will however bear it with as much grace, and as big a grin as possible. finmahnHir has rtlamvprpd that, which will be good Dews, to those of our citizens who bave largely to depend, at tbls season, for supply upon 'possum catching, 1. e. Take one or two women along wben you go hunt' . ; log and success is assured. . To all in tbls section: Any and all who Know any thing of Interest, will do tbls scribe a personal favor,by communicating It to blm, thereby enabling him to make bis weekly contributions to the Press and Banner, more Interesting to the reading public, and as but few families hereabout, but have representatives in all sections of the country, and many are in otber states, to all of whom everything f happening about, this their old home conv.. tainad in the weekly visit of the Press and Banner, is very gratifying to them. Therefore friends give us the news, your people are glad to bear from you. and we would thereby be saved an 'occasional drubbing, or to put It y-. more mildly a censure, for an imaginary alight, in not reporting certain occurrences, wben. he was as Ignorant oi them, as the "man in the moon." v Troupe. Death of Mrs. Thomas J. Brltt. The subject of tbls sketch Mrs. Thomas J. Brltt, nee MissSudle Watson, was born and reared in Anderson County, tbe youugest daughter of Mrs. M. E. Watson. At tbe age of three years she was bereft of a devoted father and ever afterwards was the pet of the household?the "baby sister." > >; When twelve years old she Joined tbe Baptist church and was a consecrated Christian ihe remaining thirteen years of her eartbly pilgrimage, esteeming it a pleasure to work in ner church, Sunday School and Missionary y,' "j society. V* She was a pupil of that noble Christian lady Mrs. Claudia R. Murray, of Anderson, and afterwards finished her education In Greenville Female College. In the year 1890 she was married to Mr. Tbos. J. Brltt near McCormlck, S. C., and leaves two bright little children, t he sad heritage of never knowing "Mother Lo ve." "The silver chord is loosed, The golden bowl broken." The mortal remains of this dear Christian woman was consigned to Its last rest place In ( the cemetery of Buffalo Baptist church last Thursday evening Nov. 15. 1894, In tbe pres enoe of sorrowing loved ones and many friends. Rev. J. T. B. Anderson conducted the funeral services, his subject was "Tbe , highest good attalnableln this life. Fear God and keep hlB commandments." and truly did she live this by preoept and example. Her's was a life of faith and good deeds. Daring tbe long Illness of six months ol nervous prostration resulting from a complltfvotfsvvk /?f /I I qoq ono frvrcrflt tlnff hof Ann froilfr she was ever ministering to those around ber. I remember on one occasiob In going to the Springs she asked some little cnildren at a lenament house for water, and receiving tbe favor she save each a token of rememberance, and this "Dorcas" like spirit prevailed during ber short life of twenty-five years and a few man lbs. Endowed with a sweet cultivated voice 6he was often called upon to assist tbe choir on public occasions. ;She, like the consecrated poetess, Miss Francis Ridley Havergal. " "Take my voice and let me slug Always only for my King." One Who Loved Her. The Fear of Death. Dr. J. W. Roosevelt, in Scrlbner's Magazine. Familiarity with death is apt to alter one's earlier conceptions of It. Two ideas are very generally accepted wblcb experience shows to be false. One is that the dying usually fear death, and tbe other, that tbe act of dying is *, accompanied by pain. It 1b well knowu toall physicians that when death is near Its terrors do not seem to be felt by tbe patient. Un less the Imagination Is stimulated by tbe frightful portrayal of the supposed "pangs of death," or of the sufferings which some believe the soul must endure after dissolution, It Is rare Indeed that the last days or hours of life are passed lu dread. Oliver Wendell Holmes has recorded his protest against the custom of telling a person who does not actually ask to ' know, that he cannot recover. As that loving observer of mankind asserts, so must every one who knows whereof he speaks asiiert that as people almost always come to understand i that recovery is Impossible. It is rarely needful to tell any one that this is the case. When nature gives the warning death appears to be as little feared as sleep. Most sick persons are very, very tired?sleep, long quiet sleep?is what they want. I have seen many people die. I have never seen one who seemed to fear death, except when it was, or seemed to be, rather far away. Even those who are constantly haunted, while strong and well, with a dread of the end of life, forget their fear when that end is at band. As for the act of dying?the final passage from life to death?it Is absolutely without evidence that the oft repeated assertions of its painfulness are made. Most people are unconscious for some hours before they die, and in the rare cases where consciousness is retained unimpaired until a few minutes before the end, the last sensation must be of perfect calm and rest. It Is worse than cruel to add to the natural dread of death which oppresses the majority of us while in good health, the dread of dying. There is surely fear enough in thl6 suffering world?let us not increase It by adding Imaginary to real causes.
