""7 " ' ' ' ' f" ; v'- v v': ' - -The Press and Banner Twelve !Pages. g ! Wednesday, Nov. 21, 1894. j Charges of Fraud. Dr. Sampson Pope, the defeated Independent Reform candidate for Governor, lias been j to Aiken in search of frauds in the recent election, and comes back to Columbia with a j great long story, furnishing, as lie j says, abundant evidence to prove the alleged j frauds. Among other of his reckless speeches | he is credited with saying : "I believe that there was rascality in the i State everywhere, except in the counties of Anderson. Oconee. Pickens, Spartanburg, 1 York, Horry and Charleston." Dr. Pope does not define exactly what he! means by "rascality," nor does he bring any j evidence to prove the rascality. There are, however, three very good reasons why he did not get the vote of Abbeville county: 1. On a dead level, he has not satisfied this people that he is a better man than John Gary Evans. 2. He did not get the Democratic nomination for Governor, but ran as an Independent Reformer. Even if he had been a better man . than Evans the great majority of Democrats took part in the primary, and for this reason wou^d not vote for an Independent. 3. He pledged his opposition to the dispensary. This of itself insured bis defeat, and would insure the defeat of any other man in 1 Abbeville county. A very large per cent, of our people support the dispensary law. Hon. F. B. Gary Is county chairman. When asked what instructions he received from ' 1 ??" i Wa co ha hnrl no iltttiuqutu uci o, aa lu n auu, o?i? ??v ? instructions eitber to encourage or tolerate fraud. But he said that he was warned against the apathy of the people. That therein lay the danger to the party, and that he inust return home and endeavor to awaken Interest In the election. The Press and Banner doesn't know if Dr.-Pope has any facts to disprove this. Mr. G. H. Moore of this village was Supervisor of Federal elections in this county, and Mr. John R. Bullock was County Supervisor of election for State officers. Nobody doubts the truthfulness or honesty of either of these men. They are in everyway Just as honorable as Dr. Pope, and they appointed managers whom they thought would do their duty honestly and fairly. According to our way of thinking Dr. Pope would have a hard job In proving that tbey acted "rascally." If Dr. Pope has proof that he utters the truth about rascality everywhere in the State, with the exceptions noted, it is bis duty to , come here, and have the perpetrators prosecuted. Tbey ought to be punished, and Dr. Pope is derelict in his duty if he does not unearth it. He is respectfully invited, and earnestly urged to come up here, and prove or disprove the truthfulness of bis cbarges. If he does not do so, the public may believe that be has uttered a slander against the people who ao not endorse euner mc man or bis methods. The Press and Banner believes there was no fraud or rascality perpetrated in this county. We farther believe it was as fair an election as was ever held in the county. Proof ol fraud would be a revelation to our people. And, Judging bis other statements by wbat he said about fraud everywhere, we attach very little importance to his assertions one way or another. ^ m ?-? The Myers Trial. The Trial ol Myers for the killing of Crowley has just been ended. The case was tried In Atlanta, and the accused was fonnd guilty of murder. ~ Excepting the Solicitor, the attorneys for \, the State acted toward the prisoner in a way to excite our sympathy for the excused. The vocabulary of invective and denunciation was exhausted, and but slight reference was made to the evidence and the law. It may be very brave in a lawyer 10 viuuy and abase a poor defenseless c? mature whose bands are tied, and wbose body Is In the bands of tbe law, bat we do not believe it; and we venture to suggest tbat it is pas6ible that no man, who was the equal of another ever received such abase, and we doubt if any man who knew the assailed was his equal ever presumed to heap on him such a tirade. ? . ? The Blue and the Grav. "The Blue and the Gray" a magazine whose chief ambition seems to he to deal in old war cheetnnts, and thread bare stories of heroic warriors, seems to display a little more than its nsual enterprise in tbe November number. In describing how the "Old North State" went into tbe war It showed tbe good taste to select a picture of tbe Pabllc Square at Abbeville, Sooth Carolina, to ornament the article. It is always well to know where to get one's selections, and as tbe Public Square at Abbeville makes a pretty picture we are willing to lend it oat to embellish any of our sisters States, and especially to North Carolina. r * rl " ' " Nam Jone*' Lecture. Sam Jones is advertised to lecture at the Greenwood Opera House to-morrow night, November 32. and a great crowd Is expected. He Is a famous lecturer and everybody ought to turn out and hear him. They will be well repaid. Don't miss a good lecture, and then say you are sorry. Pick yourself up and go to the Opera House at the right time. A THING OF BEAUTY. Duly A Co.*# Store Look# Like a Fairy Scene. All our people who have visited the store of Daly & Co.'s have been delighted not only with the treatment which they received, but with the beauty, variety and immensity of the stock of goods which these gentlemen are offering at low prices. When our friends come in from the country they should not fail to call at their new and pretty store In Rosenberg'B Block. The Messrs.
