* The Press and Banner ABBEVILLE S.C. ^"Published every Wednesday at $2 u year Id advance. Twelve Pages. Wednesday, Oct. 17,1894. ^Dr. Sampson Pope, tbe independent tiumanite .candidate for Governor, talks some more. Some light Is thrown on some of New York's dark and dangerous ways. The storm In Florida did great damage. Bnt tbe advertisements will lnteresh our people more than anything else. The State and Federal Elections are adver Used and Managers are appointed. Tbe various big advertisement* will tell you wbere to buy your goodB to tbe best advan' ta*6- % And a thousand little advertisements, filling little nooks and corners are of special interest to you. If you don't see tbe adver. y-. tlsement wblcb was intended for your eye, look for It. It is in tbe paper. ? The Dispensary I.nw. j&v - * ** Tbe opponents of tbe dispensary law bave given notice tbat tbey will appeal to th? Su* preme Court ot tbe United States. This Ik well. Let the law be settled dually aud for ever. Bat there Is scarcely the shadow of a chance >. to have It declared unconstitutional. The fact Is, the liquor element must fall Into line and obey the law. They can't override It, or defy it, by force. To carry on an elllclt or surreptltlona business la degrading, even it It were possible to elude the watchful eye of the whiskey oonstables. i ? i - Will Enforce tbe Lnw. We see by tbe newspapers that tbe Governor will hereafter prosecute vigorously all violators of tbe dispensary law. . The Press and Banner is glad to see this and we are glad to know that the liquor dealers, like other people, will be made to obey the law. ' _ _ No man has pointed out any need of a constitutional oonventlon. Does anybody want it, except tbe town politician who may be obeying public or secret orders sent to him from headquarters. Tbe constitutional con ventlon means do good, but possibly much barm, to the people. . One reason wbiob should make our people vote against the constitutional convention Is the public debt. Under the present constitution the debtor the State cannot be increased ' except by a direct vote of the people The new constitution authorize the issue of other bonds. Except a few, nobody wants the Convention, but the town politician. As a rule, the town politician ler alt right, but your manhood and self-respeot would prompt you to recent the proposition to vote away your birthright. If the politicians were not afraid the people would not endorse their work, or If they did not Intend to do something contrary to their wishes, they would submit the constitution - to a vote of the people. - . With five cents cotton, the people are hardly prepared to go into a convention which will ooet *100,000. Ball Granted. On Monday afternoon application was made before Judge R. C. Watts, at Abbeville, ror ball for Henry Harrison, colored, or Ooonee county, who Is in Jail at Walhalln, charged with the murder of William T. Miller, Esq., yesterday evening created a sensation In Court by his able and successful defense ol John Cosby, charged with murder, jn the killing of his wife. The negro Is a man without money, and had no counsel. His Honor Judge Watts appointed Mr. Miller to defend him. It appeared from the testimony that the defendant killed his wife on the 12th of Ia6i June In a Held about one mile from Mount Carmel. He hit her on the bead four times with a hoe, and the cat her throat lrom ear to ear. Any one of the blows was enough to produce Instant death. The defendant claimed that be Btruck his wile in self-defense; that she bad made threats against him, and that he killed her to keep her from killing him.
