BELL CASH 00. j I - rb.e Press and Banner BY HUGH WILSON. Twelve Pages. Wednesday, October 17,1894 To (he U.? (! & >. Authorities. Abbeville village has shown itself friendly to the G., (J. & N. railway from Its inception to the preseDt time. Then, gentlemen managers of the road, why do you allow whiskey to be smuggled over your road Into thl6 town, contrary to the laws of the Slate, in violation ol the laws of the town, and in opposition to the moral eentlmen'tof this people? Are you in league with the Illicit liquor dealers? Doyou uot allow your trainmen to bring liquor here free of freight charges, aud In violation of all law? Is It not true that trainmen have repeatedly brought liquor to Abbeville, contrary to law, and free of freight charges? If ''blind tigers" and other Illicit dealers in liquor can get their freight carried free of charge how is it that legitimate and honest trades people have to pay for every package? As far as we are Informed not a package of illicit liquor has beep brough t to Abbeville over the C. <fe G. road. The Naucity of Another Hon Me In* vndcd. Our vigilant town marshals captured two packages of illicit liquor last week?one of three gallows and one of five gallows. The five gallon package is said to have been brought in by trainmen on the G., C. & N. for Manuel McKellar, and was captured while on the way tohls hohseln the night time. The three gallon package, we believe, was captur* ed la tbe home or business place or Manuel McKellar, who Is a widower, his wife having died a year ago. II Is, therefore, Impossible to get up a scene In which a woman must take a most conspicuous part. / And so It is, that this industrious necro must submit not only to having his house searched, but to having bis liquor confiscated and carted off to the Sheriff's office. Editorial VInIL Editor Jay nes of the Keowee Courier, w*b in town last Monday night, and while here paid a visit to the office of the Press and Banner, where anybody connected with the good Keowee Courier Is always sure to reoelve a hearty welcome. Editor Jaynes is a lawyer of note, and has conducted Bome able and successful Issues id the recent courts. He pubs both talent and uncreaslng.effort In his cases. Who are leading In the demand for a Con ititutlonal Convention? The rich and the educated. Are they working in their own Interest or in the interest of the people? The Convention cannot be lor the benefit of the poor and uneducated. They now have as much right as the richest man In South Carolina. It may not be so, after tbe Convention. The poor and uneducated classes in South Carolina now have tbe fullest and most perfect rlgb'-Bguaranteed to them, but If tbe bosses, Lbe rich people and the educated people, are allowed to make a new Constitution It may take away some of those rights. Poor men, uneducated men, white and black, what do the politicians want with a Convention, if It 1b not take away some of your rights? Isn't this proposition proved by tbe boast that the negro vote will be reduced, us well as by the refusal to let the people vote 3Q It?
