Health In HapplneMN. The sunshine of a happy disposition i9 not to be lest sight of in any consideration of the laws of health. A de. _ . 1. _ _ X /vf A..AW.. f termination loiuaKe me ucat ui ouy; thing, and to be pleasant under any clrtumstances, is oue of the most desirable possessions either inherited or acquired. The joy of an unselfish character lias been- sung by poets and praised by philosophers, but its physical advantages. have too seldom been dwelt upon. And yet the phj*sian is brought into almost daily contact with maladies of the "nerves,in which he is fully conscious that pure selfishness on the part of the patient himself, or on the part of some member of his family, is alone ? responsible for the physical disorder. It is often easy to make a diagnosis I in cases .of this kind, but difficult to prescribe the remedy. A healthful in terest in people and things would ot ten provide a model remedy, but it is not easy to procure. Even more hopeless is the case of the unselfish wearied women, who V meets the physician's remarks as to what she ought to do for herself with. "I cannot do it, doctor"?from which there is no appeal. Alas for the hu- I man charity that cannot see the need A of encouragement for the mother, wife, or sister ! It lies within the power of every one to be a mental healer; the position requires no special training. And every such person is the physician's ally. Pq aooa ovopvfhlna thrnnirh thfi color ed glasses of an unselfish and hopeful b contentment. The person who is coutented and happy digests his food with greater ci ease ; he exercises with more bouyance^'hedoes better work. He may fc.vjme ill aud require a physiau, but his chances for recovery are better m because of his previous good health and his present hopefulness. The benefit derived from a "Change of scene" is universally admitted. _ The novelty of the new surroundings excites a pleasure which drives ones f thought's from self. Here the connec- t tion between happiness and? healthfulness is obniveous. It is not always easy to be patient and to push cheerfully to its close an uncongenial tass ; out u is lue omy wholesome and healthful method of workiDg and living. A constant giving way to anger, or 1 to any other of the passious, is dis- J tinctly detrimental to the physical health, and not infrequently hastens death. The habit of being' happy is inval- n uable to its possessor. If not always a N pass-port to perfect health, it is a valuable help toward it.?Youth's Companion. Baldness. There is much wearisome and need- -i less discussion about bald-headed Am- -? erican men. Wash your head thoroughly once a week with a lather of . soap and water, rinse all the soap out, ti and rub the scalp lively till it is entirely dry. Never wear an unventi- j lated hat, or any hat at all when you can avoid it. Wear a straw hat, iunrVk anAitAf nnoai Klo fiivA s Oicau V/l 1C1 V| TTUCUCTCI j/uooiw*v? V* ' V your scalp plenty of sunlight, also p plenty of air. Don't smoke too much. Fo^ow these directions, and you never will be bald-headed. Eveu if your hair has begun to grow thin, it will revive. Canadians are bald because t they we?r fur caps. It is the weariug of hot and unnatural head-coverings Q that makes the hair fall out. If a quite bald man should go bareheaded in the sun and air a year, it is likely that hair would come in again, and he would never take cold. Remember this : Nature meaut your hair to keep Sour head warm, not for caps or felt ats. Felt bats and silk hats are an abomination. These are the wretches that make American zneu bald headed. 4 It is not their mighty intellects or their excessively fine nervous systems. If you render the hair superfluous by f ? making hats do its duty for it, nature ^ -,.111 ^ Ut&eB III :?Wrj j 3Lie will uub luiciaic senseless things. Bread and Butler. More than once I have been seriously troubled because a young friend 11 has.failed to acknowledge to ine her 1 safe arrival at her home after visiting me, writes Mrs. Lyman Abbot in the February Ladies' Home Journal. The "bread and butter letter," as it is { sometimes called, because it is supposed to be an expression of thanks for what bread and butter stands for, -r should be written within twenty-four -t hours after arrival at one's destination, to the hostess whose hospitality one has been enjoying. It is not- quite enough for a young man who has tj been visiting his college mate to write to him alone; courtesy calls upon him to send at least a brief note to his < friend's mother, or the lady taking di her place. You think it is not an easy thing to do, and it is not alto- , getber if you try to make your note unique and different from others, l,| but the simplest way is the best way, ga and if you have bad a pleasant time sayfco. An agreeable incident of your rj journey, or a few lines about the cir- p cumstances into which you have gone, A' will make a letter which your hostess . will enjoy, and she will set you down in her selected list of well bred people. Besides that, you will have the consciousness that you have been thoughtful of anothers feelings, and have fl not been guilty of the appearance of ij, ingratitude. The Typewriter*!* lull nonce. ^ The modest and attractive lady typewriter has thrown a grace and ? cbarm over the office in which she m reigns that has banished the profane ik ana suggestive word to the bar-room. For the privilege of sharing her company, resting his eyes on her pretty face And watching her winning ways, "J1 the man of the world has surrendered his former prerogative of saying whatever sprang to his lips in moments of impatience, and by an unwritten law . be is now obliged to be a gentleman in " hisofflceasin his own parlor in the - companionship of his wife and chil- ]) dren. sv All this is as it should be. Places of business are now open at any hour of the day to ladies as well as men. Offices are put on a higher plane. Improper words are going out of fashion as the result, and, though fear of . offending a woman may not be the loftiest motive towatd virtue, if the W race shall be uplifted in consequence, let's accept the blessing and not de- -ride the cause. _ T Mrs. Yung Ju, wife of the Chinese minister, and her three daughters, were introduced into Washington so- i? ciety at the New Year's reception at the "White house. They are the first Chinese women who have ever ap- _ peared in 89ciety at Washington. It J: is altogether contrary to Chines cus- ] tomsand traditions, but the Chinese minister is a man of advanced ideas, and proposes to place the women of i bis household on the same footing so- ? dally with the women of Western na-j VE! tions.?Woman's Column. j Be A UKMEDY FOR I.KAX HORsKX.
